Omg masks under noses ...

HMSSophie · 04/11/2020 13:54

Just been out for cat food. I don't go out much!

Omg the number of people with their masks hanging under their nose. What the fuck is that about? It made me feel so angry, given we are about to hit lockdown 2.

I think I might start saying something. It's utterly mind boggling

I really don't understand the rationale from those saying if you can only cover your mouth then don't bother at all.

It 'may' help to reduce the spread. I haven't seen anything that says it WILL prevent it. So wearing it over your mouth surely is better than nothing.

Oh and before you jump on me yes I can wear mine over both my nose and mouth and do so but totally understand why others might struggle and those that can manage to cover just their mouth are doing their bit.

Armi · 04/11/2020 19:06

I hate it. I understand a small number of people are exempt from wearing masks, but the hundreds of folk I see slopping about with their nose poking out is ridiculous. They don’t need to hang their noses out. They are just being twats. I have a real thing about it. And am completely fucking sick of people making excuses for everything- ‘Oh, if I pull my mask up, the little fairy who lives in my nose will die!’ or ‘I have PTSD from a over enthusiastic nose picking session. I can’t cover it up.’

Jesus wept.

FreshFreesias · 04/11/2020 19:43

OP, have you thought about applying to be a Covid Marshall?

Northernsoulgirl45 · 04/11/2020 19:51

There was a family of two adults and two kids in Sainsbury the other day with noses on display. I kept tryjng to avoid them but they seemed to be following me around.

whenwillthemadnessend · 04/11/2020 19:52

I look at them and see a giant cock hanging there

Lemons1571 · 04/11/2020 20:02

Well It’s more comfortable isn’t it! And your glasses don’t steam up.

I wear mine correctly, but if I was 80+ I can imagine I would have enough to contend with. Struggling with a mask, sanitising, shopping, queueing, waiting to use the supermarket loo, and everything else. It could all be overwhelming and a detail like my nose being covered might slip through the net.

southeastdweller · 04/11/2020 20:10

How original. Thread number 417 about masks.

chunkyrun · 04/11/2020 20:17

They don't work lockdown is pending

Nochangeplease · 04/11/2020 22:34

What the fuck has the world come to.
People with the noses uncovered are thick, don’t care about people and selfish? Really?
You think having a mask under your nose whilst walking around a shop is likely to make somebody ill?? I very much doubt it.
I think the majority of people, myself included pull them down briefly beciase they need to breath some clean air, feel suffocated, or the main one for me is glasses steaming up.
I think the bigger problem is is how much people touch them. I fully believe masks are more likely to be contributing to the spread than slowing it.

Miljea · 04/11/2020 22:49

I'm always amazed at the number of people who enter my scan room for a foot/ ankle CT who walk in and say 'thank god!-as they pull their mask off. To which I say, 'could you put your mask back on please?'

Why would you imagine that somehow being in a health-care facility suddenly defies Covid?

As for 'fresh air', step back and consider those who have to wear FFP3 masks for hours on end.

Miljea · 04/11/2020 22:51

People with noses uncovered may not be 'thick', but they certainly don't understand Y8 Biology: 'Respiration'.

LH1987 · 04/11/2020 22:55

I am guilty of this sometimes. I have quite bad PTSD as a result of waking up from a comma and being on a ventilator for another month. I try my very best to wear a mask and avoid spaces I need to wear one but sometimes it gets too much for me.

I suppose, you don’t know what their situation is and at least they are trying.

MintyMabel · 04/11/2020 23:01

They don't work anyway, clearly. Lockdown 2 anyone?

Perhaps because people are wearing them under their noses.

She said that she knew about the exemption but when she had gone to the shops not wearing one before she was badly bullied by people who kept challenging her

What a lovely anecdote.

You realise that story would be an exception and the vast majority of maskelss people are not challenged at all. How unfortunate for that one person they are challenged every time. If I had COPD, you couldn't pay me enough to be anywhere near a supermarket.

ComeOnBabyHauntMyBubble · 04/11/2020 23:13

@HMSSophie

Nope I don't buy the "finding it hard to breathe" line. If they have legit lung conditions then don't wear a mask at all. I think it's that they are too stupid to realise that the mask is designed to cover nose and mouth.
Were they in the shop or outside?
StealthPolarBear · 04/11/2020 23:30
@FTMF30 They may as well not bother wearing a mask at all.
Would it not at least reduce the impact of a cough?

StealthPolarBear · 04/11/2020 23:32

@Tyzz

I was in a small local shop last week. It was empty apart from the owner. She came over to help me and was wearing her mask under her nose. I kept backing away but after a few minutes I said "sorry I'm backing away from you but you are not wearing your mask properly." She was very apologetic and put it on properly.
Technically you shouldn't adjust it when it's on, she should have taken it off, disposed of it, washed her hands, put a new one on, washed her hands. I do find the guidance a bit excessive. Oh but if you don't have one just pull your scarf up.
Pumpkinstace · 04/11/2020 23:48

I have a tiny head. It's really small, I wear aged 4-7 years in hats.

Masks slip down. I'm a delivery driver and when my hands are full I can't stop it falling down under my nose.

As a result I'm constantly adjusting them, probably causing more issues due to the constant touching my face.

Mask threads are boring now.

nildesparandum · 04/11/2020 23:55

@Topseyt
I sympathise with this lady. I have COPD as well and have had the same treatment about not wearing a mask.So I wear one when outside.

frankie246 · 04/11/2020 23:59

I struggle wearing masks, but I do wear one covering my nose but only go places I can be in and out in a few minutes. Any longer I start panicking. It's horrible, plus I can't see as my glasses steam up.

110APiccadilly · 05/11/2020 06:01

Wonder if the doctor I saw the other day (on the maternity ward) who was wearing a mask under her nose was thick and uncaring, and didn't understand Y8 biology. She seemed intelligent, kind and delightful to me, but what do I know, clearly I'm doing this, "judging other people" thing wrong.

The funny thing is that I didn't even notice until she pulled it up and said, "Whoops, better put that up before I get told off."

TheSeedsOfADream · 05/11/2020 07:11

@Superfoodie123

They don't work anyway, clearly. Lockdown 2 anyone?
Maybe so few people were wearing them properly....plus all the people refusing to wear them...plus the ridiculous homemade tat ones...plus the "I'll just wrap a tasseled scarf round my mouth" ones.

But do share your empirical peer reviewed research with the WHO as they seem to think differently.

Inkpaperstars · 05/11/2020 10:44

I don't know how well masks work but I do know that we can't conclude they don't work just because cases are rising, lockdown returning etc.

Masks were never suggested as something that would eliminate spread of infection and take away the need for other measures. They may help reduce transmission in some instances, or reduce the viral load where transmission occurs. They are just one way of trying to keep infecfion rates down.

I do struggle to breathe, or I feel I do, in a mask but I manage to keep it over my nose. When I get outside though I quite often pull it down to breathe a bit better before going back inside. So if I see people with it pulled down outside I assume that is what they are doing. I know there is a need to be careful with touching the mask to reposition. Inside though, yes people really should try their best to keep nose covered. Some people probably are trying but some will just be pushing their luck.

Considering were going into a second lockdown... it looks as though masks have achieved precisely fuck all?

Inkpaperstars · 05/11/2020 10:47

Many shops are selling children's masks whcih may help those who find they slip down. Also some etsy shops will do custom size ones for you, and include wire to help mould around the nose.
