Negative test but more symptoms?

Has anyone tested negative, but then have more symptoms and test positive?
DD got her negative result today but this evening has broken out in a itchy red rash (like stinging nettles) which around 630 was on arms, a patch on her tummy and her back to now when it's all over her. She's now complaining of a sore throat.
Is it likely the test could be wrong?

What symptoms madevypu get her tested? Has she been out since the test was done? Does she have any allergies?
Has she been near anybody with other infectious illnesses?

3littlewords · 03/11/2020 22:30

There are other illnesses and viruses apart from covid you know!

Lightsabre · 03/11/2020 22:37

I'd be a bit concerned it was sepsis or such - phone 111 for advice..

Augustbreeze · 03/11/2020 22:42

There are false negatives yes, about 30%, so it is definitely possible. Get some advice.

RingPiece · 03/11/2020 23:02

A friend had what might've been a false negative test. First he used a test from his work which gave a negative result. Symptoms worsened so ordered one online two days after receiving the negative result and it came back positive. However, it could be something else so best get more advice.

She's been in quarantine since Wednesday as a friend tested positive. Only been out to the dr who tested her (Non - specific symptoms, raised temp (not fever), lack of energy, looking ill for 4 days) because of known contact. No known allergies.

Itchy stinging nettle rash can be scarlet fever, (I had it briefly and both kids ) check her throat and tongue and symptoms. Tongue can be very fleeting though.

Ideally she needs a swab for it but definitely ABs. call Gp or 111 though as they're best to advise.

NeurotrashWarrior · 04/11/2020 06:06

My children's scarlet fever rashes moved very quickly.

Quarantiming · 04/11/2020 07:34

It doesn't look like scarlet fever rash from the images on google. The patches that were red and itchy last night are now normal with no sign of any redness and other patches are raised and itchy. Throat and tongue look fine (to me!)

Yes. My cousins were both in contact with someone who tested positive. They got a fever, aches and pains but tested negative, got much worse over a few days and then tested positive.

sofia31 · 04/11/2020 08:41

I have covid and developed an itchy, raised red rash similar to how you describe. It came out after about 10 days. I googled and found the Zoe app has cases of people with itchy rashes, so it's a possibility.

The hive type rash was what I had.

Quarantiming · 04/11/2020 09:04

Hope you're not feeling too bad sofia. Did the rash last long? She has it over her eye when she woke but the swelling is going down now. Does it keep coming and going?

30% chance of false negative, so test again if further symptoms.

Castiel07 · 04/11/2020 10:38

Sounds like hives, you can get them from any illness or allergy.
I would contact the gp again and see what they think.
Hope she is better soon.

sofia31 · 04/11/2020 14:46

I'm on the mend now thank you. My rash was about 24 hours and very irritating. I took an antihistamine and that helped, but obviously might not be appropriate for your child. I would seek further advice if at all worried and definitely test again. My son had an awful temperature 5 days after me. His test was negative. I was convinced he would have had it though. Good luck with your DD.

Quarantiming · 04/11/2020 16:10

Thanks for answering sofia she had her last patch at 1330 so it seems to be slowing down a bit. She's had it over both eyes now :( The doctors said to wait and see how it develops.
