Schools staying open during lockdown

Is anyone else worried about sending our children to school during lockdown?

The NEU has launched a petition calling for schools to be closed - you can find it here:

actionnetwork.org/forms/close-schools-and-colleges-now

Oh my god this must be the actual millionth thread about this on MN!

SquirtleSquad · 03/11/2020 10:25

Really? Again? Just search for one of the other thousand threads.

sarahc336 · 03/11/2020 10:27

Oh god and no if you searched you'd see that most of us on here want them to remain open. We need childcare and our kids need stability and education. I've heard enough about schools closing it's a waste of time and is just detrimental to our children. If you look at he infection rate figures in the child age bracket is so much lower than the adult population, leave the kids alone 🙉

sarahc336 · 03/11/2020 10:30

Sorry for double posting but it feels that sone people forget that during a lock down sone of us still have to go out to work so how am I expected to go and deliver a key nhs service if my children are at home and I have no other child care? That means I'm off work stick at home and the general public suffer as I can't do my job providing the care that my role offers x

LastGoldenDaysOfSummer · 03/11/2020 10:31

Let's not worry about the staff getting ill as long as the childcare is there, eh?

The health of the staff matters. I hear precious little understanding of this from parents, just demands that schools stay open and to hell with their health.

Nice.

KnightsofColumbusThatHurt · 03/11/2020 10:32

I work in education and am embarrassed by the NEU constantly going on about closing schools, it makes us look like we are workshy and don't care about the kids. It's so bloody predictable as well.

By all means discuss effective safety measures, PPE, strategies for distancing, whatever. But the crowing about closing schools is just cringe.

TiersTiersTiers · 03/11/2020 10:33

No not worried. Go read the other million threads about this.

Have a biscuit fir being annoying Biscuit

Vintagevixen · 03/11/2020 10:33

Another thread Jesus!

Nope I'm not worried. Children deserve better than we have given them since March, we as a society have let them down massively in so many ways and education is one.

Spot on
Todayisgood2 · 03/11/2020 10:34

@sarahc336 like last time all schools will always provide childcare for key worker and vulnerable kids so it wouldnt affect your work.

You're retired.

At least you didn't attempt to use the 'Welsh teacher death' that didn't die of covid by the way to further your one track message, as you have so shamefully recently!
You also don't have children in school at present.
Go sit in your retired middle class house and stop attempting to deny children education and social interaction

AlternativePerspective · 03/11/2020 10:40

There’s a petition out there which currently has over 300000 signatures so it will have to be debated in the commons.

It’s a difficult one IMO. I think the universities should revert to online learning only and they should get the students home so they’re not stuck in halls of residence with the underlying threat of being expelled if they go out etc.

If they close the upper secondary years though we will end up with the same exam fiasco as we had this year.

Thing is that one of the reasons people are calling for schools to be closed is because they think that it’ll mean a shorter lockdown. Personally I think that lockdown should last until the new year now. If they re-open on the 2nd of December people will just flock out to the pubs etc and we’ll be back in the same position by January. Just stay in lockdown, cancel Christmas it’s just a day after all, and let people make plans to be together when things aren’t quite so volatile. Perhaps the government could even incentivise by adding in an extra bank holiday next year or something to make up for it....

Juststopswimming · 03/11/2020 10:42

Yeah another HELL NO from me.

It never fails to astonish me that the unions seem very keen to talk their constituents out of a job. Lets just shut schools eh? Remote learning via zoom, that's definitely the same isnt it? Everyone can just do oak academy for the next 5 years - brilliant.

If thats their rationale then maybe we dont need so many teachers...?! All 8 year olds can sit in front of screens watching the same oak academy broadcasts. Thats all thats SAFE, after all.

LastGoldenDaysOfSummer · 03/11/2020 10:44

At least you didn't attempt to use the 'Welsh teacher death' that didn't die of covid by the way to further your one track message, as you have so shamefully recently!

But I didn't. You said I did but named the wrong person, that was not who I meant. So you were wrong. As I said at the time. But I've noticed you're never much concerned with facts and truth just as long as you can pursue your bizarre vendetta.

Go sit in your retired middle class house and stop attempting to deny children education and social interaction

You really are a deeply unpleasant person, aren't you? I wonder what sadness has happened in your life to make you try to upset other people by being rude. The opinion of a so obviously bitter and twisted individual really matters not a fig to me.

Go back to you cauldron and keeps stirring.

@LastGoldenDaysOfSummer yes but teachers aren't the only ones out there are they? This is what annoys me, I'm nhs I'm out there but no one worries about us, and this also means I need my kids to be somewhere to let me be out there working, yes teachers are at risk but so are many professions and my partner is a lecturer so please don't think I don't understand that teaching staff are not at risk. At uni they are not even isolating if a student tests positive ju partner has been in a classroom with well over 80 students st that have then tested positive and then goes back the next day and does it all over again

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 03/11/2020 13:04

Think about it like money.
If you have £10 and there are 2 items at £6 each, you cant have them both but you can have one and still have some money leftover.

We have a "budget" we can allow for contact. We cant have everything open or we go over that and the spread will be too high, but we can close things to reduce to spread and use our "budget" to keep the schools open. Keeping school open means people can continue to work and children keep getting their education.

nosswith · 03/11/2020 13:07

Schools should remain open in my opinion, but as others have said, universities be online only (except nursing and other medical students). The government's 'consider' message to universities about online learning is inadequate- a bit like asking me to 'consider' buying Marmite (which I loathe).

MandosHatHair · 03/11/2020 13:08

You know you can take your DCs off the school register if you want to home school them longer term. Why should they hold the space for you if another child is on the waiting list for that school?

Waaaaa · 03/11/2020 13:14

One thing childhood leukaemia ..no germs, no other kids means crap immunity and leukaemia. Ok two things ..education and preventing leukaemia. Ok three things ..Normal personality and education and preventing childhood leukaemia. That’s probably enough to recommend school stays open.

barbites · 03/11/2020 13:25

No, not worried and please stop assuming school = childcare. School means my kids are getting an education, they cannot teach themselves the gcse syllabus!

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 03/11/2020 13:29

@Waaaaa

What is a "normal personality". I didnt realise all the kids who have ever been home schooled dont have "normal personalities".

LastGoldenDaysOfSummer · 03/11/2020 13:33

Why, whenever anyone expresses concern about staff safety in school does someone always have to say, "What about .........?"

When people were expressing concern for NHS staff I joined in with that. I didn't say "What about ...." I just sympathised. It's not hard. I was very concerned for them.

Can you not just say there should be better safety arrangements? Can you not empathise with their concern without whataboutery?

RosieLemonade · 03/11/2020 14:54

I’m a teacher and I am praying the schools stay open. My daughter is an only child and didn’t interact with another child for 10 weeks during the first lockdown and there must have been million in the same situation.

LastGoldenDaysOfSummer · 03/11/2020 14:56

If you want the schools to stay open lobby for better protection for those who work in them and for the children.

RosieLemonade · 03/11/2020 14:58

Also want to add the unions have been frankly an embarrassment over both lockdowns and schools reopening.
