Fines from school

Ok I’ve sat and watched the whole of House of Commons on nothing has been said. Wondering if anyone knows. If you take your child out of school because a parent is very clinically vulnerable and cannot work, and don’t want to take the risk of catching it from school which is not following proper protocol or guidance from the government. Can you still be fined?

Yes

Trackandtrace · 02/11/2020 17:42

There was a petition about this which is meant to be addressed this week.

Join us on facebook group boycot the return to unsafe schools. Theres loys of info there

Sonnenscheins · 02/11/2020 17:44

I hope you won't get fined.

Vulnerable teachers, pupils or parents should have the option to stay at home.

herecomesthsun · 02/11/2020 17:45

The petition is supposed to be debated at 6pm today, so this is very timely.

thisismylife12 · 02/11/2020 17:49

Sat watching still, waiting! Thank you🤞🏼

The problem last time was that the most at risk and vulnerable children were taken out of school first by " concerned parents" ( abusive and neglectful parents in many cases). These children also didn't go to school when they could return for year R and 6 etc, and certainly didn't take up the places for vulnerable children as the government had wanted.
Child abuse has rocketed and safeguarding is currently swamped. Please consider these very real issues when you start yelling for schools to close, you are placing many vulnerable children out of sight.
You can always De register your child and home school you know. Your child your choice etc etc but I think some questions will need to be asked this time.

I’ve stated my reason for wanting my children at home with me, to keep my whole home safe. I understand what your saying. It is a sad state of affairs when these things are bubbling under the surface and going unnoticed. But right now. MY children are safer at home

No no no no don't de-register your child!

Your child has a right to be educated!

And a human right to be educated in a safe place! In a pandemic!

And a right that their caregivers, their parents and their teachers, don't get ill.

herecomesthsun · 02/11/2020 18:29

Sorry, to continue, it's a pandemic, some people will get ill, but the way schools have gone back, people will get ill unnecessarily, people will die unnecessarily, and sadly that is not hyperbole.

thisismylife12 · 02/11/2020 18:35

Exactly. I understand this. But I am not willing while we are literally in a national lockdown because rates are so high to put my family at risk especially my partner who is high risk x

OP posts:
3littlewords · 02/11/2020 18:37

I hope the decision gets over turned for vulnerable families but I also hope that there's certain criteria to be fulfilled that enables the children to be kept at home rather than just anyone for the reasons @Gremlinpoop states re abusive and neglected homes. Im sure any parents who have valid reasons to keep their children at home wouldn't disagree to this either.

Cookiecrisps · 02/11/2020 18:37

Yes. My head teacher will be fining people who don’t send their children to school unless you he child themselves is ill or self isolating. BTW I don’t agree with this.

thisismylife12 · 02/11/2020 18:48

Seems fine will stay in place 😫 unsure what to do from now I can’t send them in I will be a nervous wreck & can only imagine my 8 year old if she sees her dad get ill while being so vulnerable and knowing the coronavirus situation because the school has told them! 🤦🏼‍♀️ This is also making my partner ill with worry.

@thisismylife12

I would suggest having lengthy and careful discussions with the school but not de-registering children (unless you want to) as there are a lot of benefits associated with having a school place. I don't think vulnerable families should be forced out of their school places.

I don't think they should have to actually attend at the moment either.

thisismylife12 · 02/11/2020 18:52

I am going to ring tomorrow and speak to the head and hope they are as understanding as all of you lot! Thank you

Ihatemyseleffordoingthis · 02/11/2020 18:53

@Cookiecrisps - Headteachers don't get to decide who gets fined, that is the local authority (assuming England)

notanoctopus · 02/11/2020 18:56

Sooo government is swapping one set of vulnerable kids/families for another. FFS, it shouldn't be so black and white and fines are going to force people to pretend to isolate if they're clinically vulnerable. All the stats on well-being in school etc mean fuck all if you're shitting yourself you're going to get more ill or kill a parent. Fines or deregistering in the current state of affairs is awful. In addition, presumably if a kid is getting abused, parents could just say he/she is isolating, so they're not that protected either.

Then keep them at home. Local authorities are not imposing fines (or at least they weren't until half term).
justanotherneighinparadise · 02/11/2020 18:59

They want the children in school being educated correctly. If you think hole schooling is the better option then you can deregister them.

justanotherneighinparadise · 02/11/2020 18:59

herecomesthsun · 02/11/2020 19:01

There is an organisation, Boycott Return to Unsafe Schools, contact them on Facebook. They will be supportive in all sorts of ways.

Don't de-register(unless you want to homeschool permanently) because you shouldn't have to.

I think if they have fined you, then it might be that you don't get another fine.

It is after all a lockdown with high figures of infection and a close family member who is vulnerable.

thisismylife12 · 02/11/2020 19:08

I’m going to speak to the head. I definitely don’t want to de-register them. I can home school, but the social side is better for my children in the long run, just not right now my partners safety out rules the rest. I’m going to suck it up accept the 60 pound fine for each of needs be and go from there. My hands are tied in a shitty situation I know what I’m doing is for the best but I ain’t allowed too, absolute madness
