Essential retailer?

I've just noticed on Instagram that our local Superdrug store will remain open during lockdown. They don't have a pharmacy. I am now genuinely confused. How can they be classified as an essential retailer?

I've just had an e mail from Majestic Wine saying they will remain open as an essential retailer too. Personally, I don't dispute this, but I think many would!

AriettyHomily · 02/11/2020 17:02

I think Superdrug is essential. I still need shampoo, soap, toothpaste etc.

Majestic is DEFINITLEY essential.

TessTackle · 02/11/2020 17:03

Toiletries? Sanitary supplies? Over the counter medicine?

There’s loads they sell that are deemed essential.

AllPlayedOut · 02/11/2020 17:04

They sell medication, sanitary products and toiletries. Those are pretty essential.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 02/11/2020 17:10

How would you not think many of the things they sell are essential?
There was a Muppet outside our local bike shop during the first lockdown complaining they weren't essential, an A&E consultant came out and told him to do one as they were fixing his bike so he could get to work.
This stuff doesn't half bring out the tits Hmm

Oldbagface · 02/11/2020 17:35

I'm not a Muppet or a tit thank you very much. It just seems odd when these things can be picked up when doing the weekly shop. No need to be so fucking rude is there?

Yabu.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 02/11/2020 17:41

I didn't call you a Muppet or tit.
You inferred it Grin

Qasd · 02/11/2020 17:42

Off licences were added last time as essential , shortly after this mumsnet began shouting at murders buying Easter eggs, it was very confusing for me😂!

Oldbagface · 02/11/2020 17:46

Well the consensus is they are essential. Fair enough but I genuinely can't imagine many people schlepping to the Trafford Centre where pretty much everything will be closed to buy toothpaste 😒

Definitely need Superdrug and some do have pharmacy sections

OpheIiaBaIls · 02/11/2020 18:11

Our local Superdrug and Savers were both open throughout the last lockdown, they're essential because they sell medication. Off licences were also classed as essential thank the lord

Maybe people that work shifts?
GrumpySausage · 02/11/2020 18:21

I've just seen the Range is remaining open.

I mean I love the range but surprised it classed as essential?

They can't - Superdrug has a much wider range of OTC medicines and sanitary protection. And wanting particular sanitary protection isn't being fussy, it's wanting something that doesn't leak. Thankfully I have gradually been building a Brexit stockpile (again) of everything I need from Superdrug so I don't need to worry for the next 3-4 months. Ours does have a pharmacy but it doesn't really matter.

As for Majestic - ha ha.

Sparklingbrook · 02/11/2020 18:22

Our local Superdrug/Savers and Wilkos are staying open. I do think Wilkos is an odd one, but there's always queues and I wonder what I am missing.

nancy75 · 02/11/2020 18:24

I think it’s better to have a wider range of shops open - if I just want a bottle of shampoo or a packet of asprin it’s better that I can go to Superdrug rather than being yet another person in the queue at Sainsbury’s.

There is a big assumption that everybody does a weekly supermarket shop.
Shakirasma · 02/11/2020 18:28

I expect it's because they sell DIY and pet supplies.

TW2013 · 02/11/2020 18:29

With garden centres staying open I am wondering whether we can justify still going to one for tree decorations (currently tier 1 so low rate of infections). Should probably only have asked about that on the Christmas board though.

The message here is obvious. Alcohol: essential.
Decorative small quantity of chocolate: not essential.

Clearly they were saying a repeat trip to Tesco was needed so you could buy the 5kg bar of dairy milk. Lockdown was not a time to be buying non-industrial quantities of chocolate.

I got that right I hope?

I don’t think this lockdown is going to work. Everyone is crammed into Wetherspoons drinking 99p pints. I’ve had emails from all manner of shops saying they will be open with a tenuous idea of essential. Schools, colleges, unis all open. Buses and trains for commuters and school children. Even my civil service employer has emailed to say we still need to be in the office sometimes.

Wetherspoons won't be open. Pubs have to close.

This has had me sniggering.

MsInsomniac · 02/11/2020 18:37

No I know they won’t be open on Thursday but they are cramming them in now to drink up... other pubs are doing the same. It’s like a 2 day long happy hour
