Hello,
Of course we are going into a second national lockdown. I work for the NHS in a frontline role but for the bank so not classed as an employee so not entitled to furlough pay. Through some of first lockdown I used savings I have very little
Money now, I have been working shifts sporadically since as I have had to finachely. but at the same time don't feel overly comfortable working in a a&e department (in one of the busiest hospitals for COVID atm, it's very stressful) I did try and apply for esa but I apprently didn't make enough NI contributions. Where do I stand or do I just need to keep working enough o support myself ?

I was a bank worker so I sympathise, I was laid off mid March with no income until I got a permanent NHS job last month. Even UNISON took the case and challenged my employer (on behalf of myself and other bank workers) and it fell flat. As far as I can see, your only option is to get a permanent job as I did. A zero hours contract is no protection in law when you work in the NHS.

Do you qualify for Universal Credit? Are there any non public facing roles you could do, admin work for instance? They obviously will be lower paid, but that's better than your current situation.

I have UC if I don't work I get standard £350 which isn't quite enough to cover bills. I looked at a permanent role but won't work atm. I am trained as a senior HCA so the jobs that come up are just that can't do non patient facing I've already asked

UC is shit, isn't it?

I really hope that eventually once this nightmare is over, support for people is changed so that they can actually afford to live.

I hope you find a way through this.

Thank you.
Just bumping this as I've officially had the email to say I need to shield again and was wondering if this stood me anywhere else. Or wherever I just have to brave work

It's not ideal but could you choose shifts on non covid wards? I'm in a permanent front facing role and that's the way it is with bank I'm afraid.

Most of are wards are COVID atm unfortunately we apparently in the top 10 of busiest hospitals across the country. Ive loved being on the bank it wasn't meant to be a long term thing I was at uni but had to come out for health reasons (sepsis) so was waiting the few months till I went back but ofcourse that's all been turned on it's head
