Will people be panic buying gifts?

I really hope not.

I cannot afford to buy everything with this months wages and I'm concerned a lot of things will be sold out buy the time I can get them.

My mum relies on the high street for shopping and now she's worried as the lockdown will possibly continue into December.

I hope people shop sensibly and don't over buy for no good reason.

Done most of mine, but only buy for 3 people. I use online mainly...Redbubble, Etsy, individual companies. Great nieces and nephews will get money in bank accounts this year.
I do not buy for siblings, inlaws or friends.

KitKatastrophe · 02/11/2020 08:14

People might buy gifts earlier than normal buy I dont think they will buy any more than normal, so it shouldn't make a difference.

Panic buying is buying more than you need e.g. buying 3 bags of pasta instead of 1, just in case. Nobody will be buying 3x as many gifts just in case.

SnuggyBuggy · 02/11/2020 08:19

Some people have always started early with buying Christmas presents to be fair.

BeakyWinder · 02/11/2020 08:21

I don't think it's panic buying, but all the people who might have shopped throughout November and December all turning up before Thursday!

Spacemonkey2016 · 02/11/2020 08:25

I don't buy presents for anyone outside our household, as I can't really afford to! But I did buy my kids' christmas and birthday presents (Nov and Jan birthdays) super early this year, so it's all done. So not panic buying, just early buying! I hate busy christmas shopping at the best of times, let alone having to queue outside first.

starfish4 · 02/11/2020 08:27

If you seriously want something from the High Street and are in town, I'd say buy it now. We've taken minimum xmas stock in as we don't want it left it booked out to our store and then not sold/goes to clearance. I doubt we'll agree to any more Xmas stock coming in now.

PersonaNonGarter · 02/11/2020 08:29

People will bring some buying forward.

OP, could you and your mum shop online? It is a pandemic. You could shop from online independent shops if you don’t like Amazon.

katienana · 02/11/2020 08:32

There was a big queue outside Smyths yesterday, I was picking up and click n collect and was ushered to the front. I'm almost finished buying for my kids, I always get finished in November anyway. I do want to go into town today to pick up stocking fillers and get my youngest a Christmas jumper. I'm expecting it to be busy but it will be just as bad when the restrictions are lifted so I may as well take the pain now

ukgift2016 · 02/11/2020 08:32

I admit I bought alot presents last night because of the fear of stock running low in online shops.

peboh · 02/11/2020 08:33

I went shopping on Saturday, before the lockdown was officially announced and it was jam packed. People are definitely panic buying everything they can.

cheninblanc · 02/11/2020 08:34

I decided to finish my non essential shops shopping on Friday, before ebbed rumours of this lock down. I was in a just in case mood. Pleased I did as I'm done! People will panic buy over no doubt because they are worried things will be like spring and drag on again

LustigLustig · 02/11/2020 08:35

I've bought all the Dc's presents already (apart from chocolate/sweets- will get that in the supermarket in Dec).

Will try and get advent calendar, charity cards, wrapping paper and a present for DH today after work.

I always try to buy everything from local independent shops, but probably would normally leave things until late November. I started buying much earlier this year just in case, glad I did now.

Will do an online order from local businesses that will deliver for rest of family nearer the time.

Mumofsend · 02/11/2020 08:36

Smyths etc could have been manic for birthdays. I'm not panic buying or starting on Christmas but did feel a bit forced to go and buy DDs birthday presents which is in 3 weekz

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 02/11/2020 08:38

We do all ours on Amazon and few bits elsewhere online. Rarely buy anything from actual stores so won’t be panic buying but will order this month to ease the stress on couriers in December.

Floradoras · 02/11/2020 08:42

I don't think so. many can't afford it. Plus the shops will be shut that sell alot of things.

There's plenty of things online.

I did some adult gift sets yesterday on superdrug. They have some lovely sets with money off.

I've got a little something for my niece and nephew just Incase. My kids have got a few bits each. I'm cutting back though this year.

WanderingMilly · 02/11/2020 08:44

Yes, it started yesterday as soon as the lockdown announcement was made.

All the shops absolutely manic and the large garden centres (there are three near us within driving distance) were totally rammed with people buying Christmas decorations fancy chocolates, toys and so on. We have one centre which is HUGE and which sells everything, the car park is enormous but cars queuing to get in...and that was on a Sunday.

I shall finish all my Christmas shopping in the next 2 days, including stocking up the freezer.

ivfbeenbusy · 02/11/2020 09:20

Since click and collect is still allowed to operate I don't personally understand the need to panic buy presents but as much as I hope differently I can see this lockdown being extended over the xmas period since schools will be closed anyway

Popcornriver · 02/11/2020 09:43

I think so and I think there's going to be a long wait for online deliveries. I'm just going to avoid any shops as much as possible

aToadOnTheWhole · 02/11/2020 10:19

This basically.

We've decided adults can do without this year so I've only really got DS to buy for. I had a feeling this would happen so the bigger things I knew he would be getting were bought from July-September. So just have to get a few extras now, stocking fillers and stuff for his end of November birthday.

Dh called me something rotten for Christmas shopping in August and then admitted on Saturday that I was right, and I got to do a smug face at him which tbh, made it all worthwhile.

daisypond · 02/11/2020 10:32

I would avoid vouchers completely. I’d be worried about stores going under.

BlanchflowerTulip · 02/11/2020 10:37

I'm going to be giving everyone one of the 24 packs of Andrex I panic bought in March.

Hiccupiscal · 02/11/2020 10:43

I have never panic brought, but yesterday I ordered DC Xmas gifts off amazon, they only has "3 in stock" online,.now we are going into lockdown our business will suffer again and who knows what our financial situation will look like in 4 weeks time, never mind Xmas-
So to avoid disappointment i brought DC what he wanted, much earlier than I needed too.

I generally don't buy new, I trail the charity shops and shpock etc for second hand items, buy them cheap and then I Dc don't like them, or they don't get much play time, it's no real loss.

Buying the gifts new off amazon has been abit of a luxury tbh, but I know he will love them, I didnt want to get closer to Christmas and not get DC what we had been planning for him.

As for other family members, I intend to also buy from amazon (what they ask for).and get it send direct to thier houses.

Not very Xmas spirit, but nothing about this year is!

TigerBrite · 02/11/2020 10:47

I don’t think people will buy more overall. I do think they’ll rush to buy everything at once before the shops close on Thursday and possibly won’t reopen before Christmas. This week is going to be a mad rush with everyone buying everything at once instead of spreading it out.

10storeylovesong · 02/11/2020 11:24

I always aim to have presents bought by end of November and budget through the year for this. I went and bought my presents (for kids mainly) on Sunday. It was busy but very well managed by the stores. I haven't panic bought in that I haven't bought anything that wasn't on the lists and haven't bought more than usual, but I do feel loads better for being prepared. We bought lots of crafty stuff for making wrapping paper / cards / decorations and stuff as well have more time at home, which I possibly wouldn't have bought before as I'd have spent the money on santa visits etc.
