Will school sport be banned?

Does anyone know if school sport is going to be banned? It seems odd to stop a group of children in the same school bubble from playing sport together but a lot is odd at the moment.

Ds's extra curricula sport has just been cancelled as the place they usually train (a secondary school) have cancelled all external bookings until after lockdown - he's gutted and will be a right grump & thoroughly lethargic without any physical exertion Sad
His school pe is literally just running (or walking by the sounds of it) at the moment no hockey, rugby or football although I think each school must make the decision as another secondary nearby is offering full PE and all sporting activities including after school rugby, cricket & basketball.

I’m happy to send my child in full waterproofs and grippy shoes. I don’t like this negative ‘we can’t possibly do that here’ attitude.

My boys go crazy if they are stuck in all day. They need fresh air and lots of exercise. It’s madness to keep kids inside just in case they slip over. We should be thinking of ways this can happen rather than just giving up on it.

@TheDrsDocMartens that’s a good solution, sounds like a great school!

@Delatron, who has said "we can't possibly do that here?"

Orangesarenottheonlyfruit · 02/11/2020 13:24

At my DDs primary, we had to buy boiler suits for them. They were excellent and meant the kids went out in all weathers and could mucky as they liked. Pain for the teachers to get and off though I imagine.

borageforager · 02/11/2020 13:41

PTA funds at our old school were used to buy waterproofs etc so there were always some in school if necessary.

No change to our PE provision this term. Ds has gone in today with new hockey stick, shin pads and gumshield.

If they are in a classroom together all day I can't see how running around a hockey pitch is going to add any risk.

Heavy breathing and bodily fluids I would guess.

frozendaisy · 02/11/2020 14:07

Our after-school clubs just been suspended until further notice.

@Delatron - oh, I assure you, children are still being sent out in the rain where I live, staff permitting. I think you’ll find health and safety rules on supervision have to be followed, however, and if there are not enough adults to do it, then the school can’t do it, and there is only so much goodwill from staff when it comes to being asked not to have any point in the day when they can eat or go to the toilet, because they are required to stand outside in the rain supervising playtimes and dealing with blood, tears and wet clothes. Now is also not the best time for children to be sharing school waterproofs and spare clothes either, tbh.

Delatron · 02/11/2020 14:45

I’m glad schools are still sending children out in the rain. Mine isn’t.

Like the idea of making waterproof clothing part of the uniform.

Walkaround · 02/11/2020 14:48

@Delatron - maybe they have a staffing issue at your school. Schools often advertise til they are blue in the face for people to work as playtime and lunchtime supervisors. It’s a hugely unpopular job!

CallmeAngelina · 02/11/2020 14:52

Earlier in the term, we had to double up on duties per year group and have 2 out in the rain supervising, and two indoors for all those who didn't have appropriate clothing. Gradually, pester power meant that parents sent in stuff, as the ones outside were having a much better time and finally, by half term, everyone could get outside (and half of the staff team could get a coffee in peace!)

Like the idea of making waterproof clothing part of the uniform.

I have a feeling that waterproof "over trousers" are part of the uniform in Denmark too. Basically we should just copy them. It rains a lot there.

Let's just hope they constitute an essential purchase.
Or that Amazon doesn't run out.
