I know I should have "moved on" but Cummings...

I do think the government's handling of that sorry business is, in large part, responsible for where we are now.

I know there were always rumblings of complaints about "others" not following the rules but ever since we were told people must do what's right for their families it seems widespread. Before that the majority were complying and there was a general feeling of at least wanting to be seen to do the right thing. Even now with tightening restrictions, lots of people just simply seem to be saying they're not prepared to do it. People who want to stick to things to the letter face derision.

I don't understand why he didn't just say "I made a poor decision, I was wrong" which would have enabled him to stay in his job and everyone to move on, instead of that ridiculous justification which lead everyone to question why they had been stupid enough to follow the rules.

I get the feeling, from taking to colleagues and what's going in on SM, that it doesn't matter what the restrictions are, there won't be enough people sticking to them to make a difference. And I do think Cummings was the turning point.

[quote vera99]They are gallows - a bigger version is here. Matt Hancock and Jacob Rees-Mogg and the braying mob led by Cummings are looking to put Harold Shipman on the third whilst Gove skulks in the background and Chris Whitty looking disgusted walks away.

Great fan of his savage Hogarthian photo-montages and Phil Mitchell appears in everyone as a sort of everyman.

Many thanks. Funnily enough my email from Stewart Lee recently was bigging up Cold War Steve. But I hadn't seen that.

How nice it is to hear someone say "Hogarthian" about social commentary instead of a roundabout Grin Which reminds me ... is it time for gin yet ?

vera99 · 04/11/2020 16:46

@SerendipityJane strictly speaking the sun must have gone down below the yardarm - but as we were up to 3.30 last night watching the election my yard arm is set to 6 pm.

Funnily enough, CWS has done a gin lane .... Grin

Me and DH had Covid recently. We also have a young child with ASD. Unlike Cummings, who had family local to London, we have no local family within 150 miles. We were symptomatic, went into isolation and just had to get on with shit. At times that meant having to climb out of bed with a vile COVID migraine, the chills and massive fatigue to make DS a sandwich, get him a drink, help him wipe his bum etc. It was lousy and we sucked it up. So, as far as I'm concerned, Dominic Cummins can go fuck himself....

Sorey Watermelon I wasn't calling you a moron x

This ^

I remember our whole household having norovirus, plus having a 6 month old to look after, it was hell, so I sympathise with you.

I get the feeling Dominic Cummings is not used to having to do the childcare himself, so packed them off to his parents instead. Totally irresponsible, but I agree the castle trip was worse as there’s no defending that.

I also get the feeling he is not used to being told what to do and following rules.

vera99 · 04/11/2020 18:10

Never forgive, never forget.

eveoha · 04/11/2020 18:20

Dominic Cummings suffers from Korsakoff Psychosis - he spent most of his time in USSR (after his ‘travel business’ failed) in an alcohol induced stupor - he really should be incarcerated without tech - thus rendering him unable to wreak any more damage on our lives ✊🏼

1stV45 · 04/11/2020 18:56

@Watermelon999

I do agree with you *@1stV45*.

Do you feel the same about Margaret Ferrier?

In some respects she was even worse as she travelled on public transport knowing that she had it. And went to parliament. And had previously castigated Dominic Cummings.

I have lost respect for them all tbh.

I think she herself behaved appallingly but I don't think her case is as damaging because no one rushed to defend her or justify her actions.

Which always reminds me of where Lee Harvey Oswald spent time.

Who knows ?

I agree. I was furious (and still am to some degree) that he was allowed to get away with it. Not only that the government said he did the right thing for his family.

bellinisurge · 05/11/2020 08:34

I spent a lot of time in the former USSR. He's an entitled dick. You don't need to go to the USSR to learn that "skill".

ZaZathecat · 05/11/2020 08:56

I 100% agree op. It was the one time I've written to my MP as I was (am) so angry. MP was a waste of space government yes -man.

And 6 months on, the questions keep coming...
www.sunderlandecho.com/news/politics/council/boris-johnson-declines-answer-durham-mp-over-dominic-cummings-3025160

The issues were aired in Parliament by city MP Mary Foy, who demanded answers at Prime Minister’s Questions in the House of Commons on November 4.
She said: “In my short time as an MP for the City of Durham, Dominic Cummings has fatally undermined public health messaging, had historic planning violations exposed and has short changed us with an unpaid council tax bill of up to £50,000.

“Will the PM condemn this continued flouting of the rules, or does he have a blind spot even a trip to Barnard Castle can’t fix?”

But Prime Minister Boris Johnson simply replied to Ms Foy: “I think what has possibly undermined people’s confidence and understanding in what the government is trying to do is constant political point scoring and attempts to obscure what we’re trying to do by the Labour Party.

So Johnson reckons what has undermined confidence in the Government and public compliance is.....Labour! WHAT A LOAD OF BOLLOCKS BORIS

luckylavender · 05/11/2020 21:24

@Youandmeareluckytobeus - leadership is about setting a standard. When Cummings broke the rules & Johnson backed him, his integrity was gone.

ItsAlwaysSunnyOnMN · 05/11/2020 21:37

Allowing DC to keep his role will come back to haunt the Tories

And so it should things changed that weekend their was a shift in public opinion and attitude and it’s remained

Generalconfusion · 05/11/2020 21:40

I absolutely agree, OP.

It wasn’t about Cummings per se. It was about Boris and then that wall of Tory ministers trotting out one by one and saying he’d done the right thing. That he’d done what any good father would do. That it was reasonable. Saying that to a suffering public who were instantly slapped in the face with their own sacrifices.

GrumblyMumblyisnotJumbly · 05/11/2020 21:40

Anyone fancy a beer?

I know I should have "moved on" but Cummings...
Iwantacookie · 05/11/2020 21:46

Hes definitely fucked it in my opinion. I'm furious that social services havent been on his case for child endangerment. Noone would drive to check their eyesight never mind put their child in the car while doing it.
Hes a jumped up nasty little "man" who thinks hes better than everyone else.
