So from what I see
Germany testing 21 % of population
Uk 49 %

Cases - Germany coming up to 20kish, UK 25kish

Track and trace - Germany reaching 25 -%, UK 60 %

Lockdown in November- UK's much stricter than Germany

So on that basis - why is UK so criticized and Germany lauded?

Is it down to deaths?

Germany has more beds per head of population meaning it has more room for error on restrictions/compliance levels.

Track and trace means nothing if people then don't isolate.

Lockdowns need to be stricter if you have already let the virus get to a level where it is out of control and you have fewer hospital beds.

The UK has greater levels of economic deprivation which leads to worse underlying health which means more people are vulnerable to both catching covid and becoming as ill with covid.

Germany's doing economically better because it hasn't had to lock down as hard and its had less cases overall and less deaths. See number of hospital beds.

I would also expect that decentralised government plays a part here because a federal system allows areas to make decisions locally on the basis of the problem locally so reopening and closures aren't decided by lottery / political point scoring.

Germany still has problems, but its also not got the same dreadful government messaging which undermines public trust (and therefore compliance) in the same way.

The main difference is the massive number of deaths in the U.K.

Due solely to the underinvested NHS!

And German lockdowns have been more 'liberal' and less restrictive as in the UK, and I think Germans have taken more personal responsibility to stop the spread of the virus.

Even this upcoming lockdown in Germany still allows 10 people from two households to meet, schools are staying open, hair salons are staying open etc.

Also, in terms of tests, Germany are doing around 2 tests per 1000 people each day and the UK just under double that at around 3.8 per 1000 people.

The big difference in death rates is the direct result of the terrible state of the NHS.

Germany has invested far more money in its hospitals and health care for the past 3 decades.
