China's low Covid numbers

Has anyone read an experts (not a social media conspiracy persons) response as to why China has low Covid numbers, or aren't having a second wave and lockdown? Nothing is ever mentioned about China in the news or seem to be questioning it.

It's a heavily controlled, harsh, totalitarian regime. This has meant people had no choice but to obey the rules, so did not spread the virus as fast.

Mass compulsory testing, lockdown was LOCKDOWN no bubbles, no travel between areas, no new cases being imported from other countries, masks by EVERYONE no “exemptions” etc etc

They don’t include asymptomatic positives in their “confirmed cases” headline number.

But their lockdowns were effective because they were extremely strict. I have a lot of friends with parents/grandparents in China and they report things are largely back to normal and they’re barely wearing masks except in very busy indoor places these days.

Whenever you see any news reports from China, I look in the background and can only ever see young people.

It's interesting isn't it. Here we are moaning about wearing masks, whereas maybe if we'd all been much stricter to start with, we may be in a different place now

I meant we're moaning about little stuff. Where as from what I understand China was so strict about everything, but has it under control now apparently

They're militant in how they're controlling the situation. If you need to isolate for example, your door is sealed with tape. We wouldn't ever be as compliant as a nation.

A friend shared this on FB today. Not mainland China but Hong Kong, who have also managed infections well.

I'm not sure I I believe any of the facts or numbers that China chooses to publish.

China has constant little outbreaks going on in the border cities from new imported cases. Hong Kong is mostly struggling, too (recurrent controls imposed lifted imposed lifted imposed...).

China have far fewer care homes for elderly than we do in west. Elderly are usually cared for in private homes. There are more working age adults in China as % of population than in the UK.

Health care in rural China is poor, preventive care is poor. If you get a chronic disease & are elderly, living in rural China, you tend to die soon not linger for yrs until something like a pandemic finishes you off.

African situation not so different.

Japan has also had lower cases. It's likely that a previous SARS outbreak has conferred some immunity in these areas.

That was an initial theory but does not hold water given that the antibody clearance is so fast.

It's really not. You've fallen for anti-China propaganda.

My friends in China see the British and American response to COVID as an absolute embarrassment. It's business as usual there now, thanks to their "totalitarian" approach.

I'm interested they will soon allow business meetings up to 50 persons, when private meetings still must be < 4 people. It's nice the beaches have reopened even if you can't have a public BBQ.

What are you comparing it to?

In Asia in general the threshold for shutting down businesses is far lower compared to Europe. But things close before the virus is out of control. So while Hong Kong and Singapore have had recurrent shut downs, the virus remains at low levels and commerce has been prioritised so their economies are holding up better overall.

In my opinion living in Asia with lots of contacts in China - the draconian isolating and tracking/tracing has largely worked. But the virus is not eradicated there, it pops up in different cities every few weeks.

We're just moving this over to the coronavirus topic.

We’re moving to China soon. We have to have numerous Covid tests (PCR and blood) before we fly and at the airport when we arrive. We then have to spend 14 days in total quarantine in a hotel they allocate with daily temperature monitoring. Then another test before we leave the hotel.

China have tackled corona very aggressively and I also suspect their figures are more of a ball park rather than exact.

Russia is also interesting. Very high case numbers and proportionally low deaths. I don’t know enough about how they’ve handled it though.
