Swimming pools to close?

Boris just stated gyms will close. Does anyone know if this also means that swimming pools in local authority leisure centres will also have to close? I can't see anything specific.

Genuine question as I have to swim to remain able to walk (disabled).

Leisure centres were closed during the first lockdown, so i think It’s likely they will close now too.

I think it’s sadly likely. I’m so gutted as my daughter was getting really good at swimming. She needs 1:1 lessons as she’s disabled, and they’re so expensive, it’s really frustrating having long gaps between lessons and her then going backwards with it.

I have assumed they'll close. My son is in the same boat, swimming is the best exercise to mean he will continue walking, the doctors all say he needs it as physio but if the pools shut the pools shut and short of digging up my garden to build a pool we're stuffed even though case numbers locally are low, and the absence of swimming will increase the chance of surgery but that doesn't seem to matter.

Am gutted if they have to close again

But what about schools that have their own pools?

profpoopsnagle · 31/10/2020 20:29

Am also gutted. It's taken me 2 months to get back to the swim fitness I was at in March and now it's gone again. It's not at all an activity that's easy to replicate at home, unlike perhaps cycling. For so, so many people, it's an aerobic exercise they can do which helps with supporting joints etc. Given that all signs indicate the healthier you are, the more likely you can recover better from any illnesses, closing pools and gyms is incredibly short sighted and probably more damaging in the medium term.

Yes (mumsnet slowly realises that everything but schools actually includes a lot of things!)

Anordinarymum · 31/10/2020 20:30

Me too. Swimming for me has become a staple. I am a little afraid of falling when running especially when the weather is not good/leaves on the ground etc, so swimming is safer and I love it

clary · 31/10/2020 20:32

Yes I presume pools will close. I am so gutted, like a pp, my swim fitness has improved over the last three months and I've knocked 6 mins off my mile, getting back to where it was in March.

It's good for my mental as much as my physical health.

Mine has announced closure.
