AIBU for thinking people wearing masks are the ones spreading the virus?

I was at the supermarket today and no one was following the 2 metre social distancing guidelines. Masks give people a false sense of security and people become lax.

Putting a bit of gel on your hands doesn’t remove all the germs, your mask isn’t PPE (check out HSE website) and neither are gloves.

If this virus was so bad, why aren’t supermarket workers who see hundreds of people a day most at risk of dying.

because they don’t realise/don’t have the time to keep replacing them through the day. Or simply don't have/can't afford enough masks to be wearing 6 or more a day.

GachaBread · 01/11/2020 21:39

Our European neighbours France, Italy, Germany etc have all had a higher compliance with mask wearing yet have been plunged back into lock down.

@UserX

Antivaxxers & antimaskers are now one & the same.
Definitely! I had the flu jab last week only to be told I will have been deliberately infected with covid by the same person who will loudly tell anyone and everyone he doesn't believe in masks and refuses to wear one. Ironically, although he believes covid is a hoax decided to follow the advice to shield when the letter dropped on the doormat Confused I need to add that this was on SSP only so its not like he shielded for time off work and financial gain because that really wasn't the case he struggled financially to get by. Honestly I dont know how some people's minds work at all these days Confused
LindaEllen · 01/11/2020 21:48

Honestly, this is exactly what I think. I spent ten minutes queuing outside Home Bargains the other day (it feels like a long time in the rain!) with everyone standing 2m apart, but then the second you get in the shop it all goes to shit, nobody is standing apart, it's just as though it never happened, people pushing past each other, reaching over each other, picking things up and putting them back down, far too many people just walking straight past the sanitiser at the front of the shop - more than can possibly be exempt just not wearing a mask at all.

It's a complete disgrace to be honest, and I'm not surprised that with this, plus university halls and zero social distancing in schools, we are where we are.

“If two individuals are standing across from each other and neither are wearing pants, if the person across from you urinates, you will get wet.If you are wearing pants and the person across from you urinates, you will be partially protected. If both individuals are wearing pants, you will be completely protected and remain dry.”

“It’s the same for mask wearing. If neither individual is wearing a mask, you will both be exposed. If one person is wearing a mask, you will be partially protected. If both individuals are wearing a mask, both will be protected from being exposed to the virus.”

If a masks protects people how are people still getting it with mask use?

So it’s being caught in homes? So why are all the other shops closing?
@EmeraldShamrock “white countries” have had disproportionately more deaths than Asian countries. So perhaps it’s a European disease that makes white people more at risk?
WTF? Go and tell that to the people of Peru, the indigenous people of Brazil, African Americans, American Indians, India, Indonesia...

Georgeoftheinternet · 02/11/2020 01:04

@feelingverylazytoday the virus is killing disproportionately more whites Europeans and men .

I'm waiting for someone to imply that the virus was engineered by someone in China that wants to wipe out white people, especially white men.

I don’t understand what’s difficult to understand about this? Do you think mask wearing is all part of a huge conspiracy theory? It’s been explained time and time again in several posts that masks can protect you to a degree, if worn correctly but does not guarantee total protection. This might help... www.nebraskamed.com/sites/default/files/images/covid19/wearamask_infographic.jpg

I love the urinating with or without pants on!

I will be using this when explaining to my students why we wear masks.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 02/11/2020 09:19

I do understand. I wear a mask.

But I question everything. I think a lot. And watching how people currently wear masks makes me wonder if it is worsening it. I’m still wearing a mask FFS.

Remember early in it was said that improper mask wearing could make things worse? This isn’t a new theory! It was mainstream back in March and it’s time to revisit it if we think that surface contamination is the main means of transmission.

This doesn’t make me think the earth is flat. But right now do we have evidence that mask wearing in the UK is reducing cases in the so called second wave? I don’t think we do.

DameFanny · 02/11/2020 13:55

But surfaces aren't the main means of transmission, and the reason - the sole, stupid reason - the government was advising against masks in March was because they didn't even have enough for healthcare workers. They didn't want a run on supply by scared people that would make the situation even worse for hospitals and care homes, so they told us not to wear them.

Masks help - given how much was opened up, transmission and death rates are lower than they would otherwise be.

Proper distancing would be even better, but there's too many dicks shouting off their fat uncovered mouths about 'just a sniffle' and 'the economy' and confusing people who on the whole want to do the right thing but are now being told outright lies Angry

Flutter12 · 02/11/2020 17:12

I understand what you’re saying.
I don’t think it will make things worse but wearing them in a wrong way like not over your nose or using too thinner material would definitely be less effective.
But I’m not sure any would be completely ineffective because even if it’s not over your nose it’s still over your mouth which is better than nothing. I could be wrong though.

I’m saying that those people wearing masks aren’t socially distancing in shops and it’s a false sense of security. “I’ve got a mask on, it’s ok”.
You also see shop workers standing
