Case at school - radio silence

notroundthebend · 29/10/2020 08:57

It appears we have a confirmed case at my ds school in his class in school last week 'poorly' Thursday / Friday who tested Friday PM and was confirmed Saturday. The mother is also now awaiting results and is unwell. Mother has tried to contact the school via email/phone and can get no response. Other concerned parents including myself have also tried to get a response from the school.. nothing!
Is there supposed to be some sort of guidelines (even in half term) about reporting confirmed cases to school? I can't help but wonder they are keeping quite deliberately. Worth noting the other local school which closed its doors midway through last week is having an extra week off because cases have risen sharply! I just feel like we need to be alerting people..🤷‍♀️

Had a phonecall from Head today. Apparently a child in ds2's bubble tested positive today.

Because it's now been a week (being off this week for 1/2 Term) since they saw each other, last Friday. Head says Ds2 needs to stay off next week.

Is it worth getting him a test. If it's negative will he be allowed back sooner?

Frazzled2207 · 30/10/2020 13:59

@Oblomov20
I don’t think that’s right unless your son was in contact with the child less than 48 hours before he developed symptoms.
I suppose possible he got symptoms at the weekend but only just got a positive test result

Frazzled2207 · 30/10/2020 14:00

Ps you can’t get a test if no symptoms. Even if negative in theory he could be incubating.
And if the bubble has closed then nobody will be back.

Augustbreeze · 30/10/2020 14:01

Negative test results can not shorten isolation periods of close contacts, no.

Oblomov20 · 30/10/2020 14:05

Frazzled,

Thank you but I'm confused by your message.

"I don’t think that’s right unless your son was in contact with the child less than 48 hours before he developed symptoms. "

Exactly.
I can't see how / why Head wants Ds2 to isolate for another week. He hadn't seen any school children for 7 days, as of today.

Can't he go back to school on Monday? They have exams and assessments thus coming week. I know it's selfish of me to want him to sit them.

Why does he need to wait another week?

Frazzled2207 · 30/10/2020 14:07

I think you need to speak to the head and ask him- it sounds like he has not got the correct advice. Unless the poorly child got sick within 48 hours Of the holidays starting and only got a positive test now.

Oblomov20 · 30/10/2020 14:22

Which is unlikely isn't it?
If they got the result today?
Trying to work out when Ds2 would have last been in contact with said child.

Not that I know who it is!

Frazzled2207 · 30/10/2020 14:26

@Oblomov20
Unlikely but not impossible. Child could have got ill on Sunday morning and had a test on Monday. They occasionally do take 4-5 days to come back.
You should get a letter from test and trace (via the school) if you really do need to self isolate.

WanderingMilly · 30/10/2020 14:27

Our school doesn't have a dedicated email address for CVID cases. In fact, it's very cagey about the whole thing and sticks to the mantra "we don't think we have it here" when I know for a fact various children have been sent home to test or "stay at home" and others have a special code against their names on the register. But we are specifically told to say absolutely nothing to parents or anyone who asks.

Oblomov20 · 30/10/2020 14:27

So. Is it worth me trying to get him tested?

If it's negative will he be allowed back to school any earlier.

No answer from school.

Numberblock7 · 30/10/2020 14:31

If he’s a contact then no, he won’t be allowed back any sooner with a negative test. Tests are for people with symptoms only (unless part of a specific pilot study etc which you’d know if you were part of).

MrsHamlet · 30/10/2020 14:54

He will not be allowed back into school any earlier even with a negative test.
And you shouldn't be getting a test without symptoms.

Oblomov20 · 30/10/2020 14:59

What is classified as a 'contact' ?
In his school? Year group? A child he has one lesson with, ie pe? His tutor group?

Oblomov20 · 30/10/2020 15:01

What happens if every two weeks another child that my Ds rarely sees, gets a positive test.

I could get a phone call every 2 weeks? And then my son might not be in school at all between now and Christmas!

MrsHamlet · 30/10/2020 15:02

It could be that he sits next to someone who has tested positive. The last contact will have been on Friday (ie a week ago) which is why your son has to isolate for another week from today.
They are very very unlikely to tell you who the student concerned is.

MrsHamlet · 30/10/2020 15:03

In theory, yes. School will have to provide your son with work over his period of isolation.
FredtheFerret · 30/10/2020 15:10

I emailed our HT directly as my DD tested positive 3 days into the half term.

They have emailed her whole year group to say their bubble must not return to school until 9 November. The whole lot need to self isolate for 14 days.

So some schools are certainly monitoring.

Oblomov20 · 30/10/2020 15:11

His feels very unfair.

If a child has symptoms, they can get a test. If it's negative they can return to school straight away.

But if you are a contact of a positive child, you can't get a test, because you don't have symptoms. Do you need to stay off school.

I'd be better off if Ds started to show symptoms. Then I could get him tested. And if negative he could return to school immediately.

As it is, he has to stay off for a week.

Case at school - radio silence
Oblomov20 · 30/10/2020 15:13

I know they wouldn't tell me who the child was. I wasn't asking.

I just don't want him home unnecessarily.

MrsHamlet · 30/10/2020 15:14

Yes. Because those are the rules.

Oblomov20 · 30/10/2020 15:16

MrsHamlet: "He will not be allowed back into school any earlier even with a negative test. "

Actually that is not what the guidelines I just attached say.

They say that if test negative you can return to school immediately.

FredtheFerret · 30/10/2020 15:17
Confused

Do you expect teachers to only teach your DS if the rest of the year group are off then?

DD can actually return in 10 days as she's the child with Covid, which is mid way through next week. I'm assuming they don't actually want only her in Y11...and will keep her off until the Monday when her year return.

MrsHamlet · 30/10/2020 15:18

He's not off unnecessarily. He's off because he's been identified as a contact with a confirmed case.
He might not have it. He might. On the basis that he might have it, he has to isolate. It's necessary.

MrsHamlet · 30/10/2020 15:20

@Oblomov20

MrsHamlet: "He will not be allowed back into school any earlier even with a negative test. "

Actually that is not what the guidelines I just attached say.

They say that if test negative you can return to school immediately.

The guidelines say that AFTER a test which is given when someone has symptoms, if it's negative, they can stop self isolating. But that's not his situation. I understand why you want to get round it, but you can't.
catchingzzzeds · 30/10/2020 15:31

I think the delay in getting test results is causing contacts to find out they need to isolate a week late. I've just found out my DS has to isolate until the 7th, the infected person developed symptoms the weekend before half term started, was tested that Sunday and has only just got the results.

You can't test and then carry on if negative, you have to isolate regardless.
