Has anyone had contact (brief or prolonged) with a positive case and not caught it?

8 people at my work have tested positive.

I've been told to work from home for the next 14 days and asked to isolate.

Just wondering if this means that since I've been in some form of contact, that I'm really likely to get it myself?

Has anyone been in contact with a positive case and not caught it?
What type of contact was it?

My mum works in a care home, and a few of the residents had it a few months ago. She works in close proximity with people due to the nature of her job, and she’s never caught it.

My stepmum works in retail. One of her staff members had it and she works with him a lot. She never caught it from him.

My ex SIL has it but her partner and kids haven’t got it.

"Ben" I know, who sat in a crowded room next to & chatted to "Alan" for maybe 25 minutes. Alan came out with symptoms about 16 hours later. Ben remained well, never got it.

Someone I know her husband has it and her kids have it. She has had more than one negative test even though she has all the symptoms of having it. 🤷‍♀️

One of DD’s colleagues has it. They were working closely together, no masks, no distancing at work, having lunch/breaks together. She has a sore throat but no Covid symptoms so hasn’t had a swab and doesn’t need to isolate because work reckon they wouldn’t have been less than 2m apart for more than 15 mins.

Had meal in pub with 4 others ,two of whom tested positive two days later .

I have no symptoms 21 days later .

But of course I ,like many others on this thread ,have no idea if I did catch it and remained aysptomatic . Because the general public can't get a test unless they have symptoms .

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 29/10/2020 07:24

My work colleague had it in march quite severely ( collapsed at work , ambulance etc.) Her husband and child both tested negative.

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 29/10/2020 07:25

Negative for the antibodies sorry.... and no symptoms at the time either

cheezy · 29/10/2020 07:27

My lodger (so close contact) tested positive. I tested negative.

Mindymomo · 29/10/2020 07:45

Where my son works 5 out of 40 plus people tested positive, 3 spent an evening together and a whole day. Everyone else has been privately tested, all negative despite working closely with these 5.

4 out of the 5 had no symptoms.

All now isolating for 14 days, despite the company believing a negative test means they can go back to work.

DuzzyFuck · 29/10/2020 08:03

Interesting! Can I ask where anecdotally people 'haven't caught it' have they tested negative or just not shown symptoms?

I'm involved with something where people are tested as a matter of routine and over 50% of positives identified are completely asymptomatic, so it may be that some of these people did catch it but had no symptoms?

Toddler DD has just finished a self isolation period due to coming into contact with a positive case in her nursery room (2 - 3 year olds). She went back to nursery yesterday and nobody else in the room, either children or the staff, had developed symptoms or tested positive.

Zero social distancing going on at nursery when they are in the room ‘bubbles’.

FMSucks · 29/10/2020 16:54

My DS10 was diagnosed with it on 26th after a negative test on 21st (class outbreak). All other family members tested negative so far.

We will be tested again next week but DS10 has zero symptoms and no one else displaying any symptoms either in the household and my DS is joined to my hip!

My friend worked on a Covid ward where PPE was limited at the start of the pandemic and has had a negative antibody test. I shared a car and meal with another friend before she developed symptoms (before lockdown and before testing was available) but her cancer consultant thinks she most likely had it and didn't develop symptoms.

AnoDeLosMuertos · 29/10/2020 17:08

Yes I sit by a colleague for 2-3 hours a week. He got CV and I didn’t.

Yellredder · 29/10/2020 18:29

Spent most of the day with a colleague, less than 2m apart, not wearing masks and I didn't get it.

BeesBehindMyKnees · 29/10/2020 18:59

My step mum tested positive a little while back. My Dad was tested also (he had cold symptoms) but was clear.

I read somewhere recently that you have around a 20% chance of catching it, if you LIVE with someone who has covid - but cannot find/remember where I read it now Blush

Moondust001 · 29/10/2020 19:04

My friend lives in a small three bedroom terrace. Daughter in one bedroom. Two sons share a bedroom. Bedroom for parents. One bathroom. One kitchen. One living room. No room to socially distance or isolate. Son (15) tested positive. Whole family stick together in a small house, cold weather so doors and windows shut. Nobody else caught it.

OverTheRainbow88 · 29/10/2020 19:06

I read that 50% don’t pass it on to their spouse!

NeurotrashWarrior · 29/10/2020 19:06

0 distancing in sen classes, I didn't catch it. Some colleagues didn't and their class is very hands on.

NeurotrashWarrior · 29/10/2020 19:07

Although, other staff and children did.

So not really much help!

satnighttakeaway · 29/10/2020 19:10

Loads of people are in contact with positive cases every day and don't catch it. There are lots of things we don't know about covid but we've known that from day 1

PilatesPeach · 29/10/2020 19:11

Yoga classes should never be only 1m between participants at least 2m required in studios. In theory even if class is an hour long, you should not need to self-isolate if you are at least 2m away.

ShinyGreenElephant · 29/10/2020 19:41

Spent 3 hours on the covid ward today saying goodbye to my gran so let's see what happens there. Full PPE but all it was was a plastic apron, gloves, mask and visor, tiny little room with windows shut and I kept having to put her oxygen back on and give her sips of water. Dont think my chances are great tbh. I'll be amazed if my grandad hasn't caught it as hes been there for 48hrs straight and keeps taking his mask off to kiss her Sad

Twattergy · 29/10/2020 19:49

Govn messaging has scared us into thinking that being in close proximity to someone with covid means you will get it and that it is extremely catchy. Not the case. Of course you are at risk but it is more likely you won't catch it than you will. Numerous experience of families living together where only one or some get Covid. Husband spent 2 hours in a car w one other who tested positive 48hrs later. He didn't get it. Or maybe did but asymptomatically.
