Why does a town in south Somerset have lowest rates?

I know the main reasons given are no city, no uni, no tourism, no motorway, but surely that’s not unique to Yeovil?

Could be just chance. Somewhere has to have the lowest rates. There's a large chunk of Somerset with very low rate, and in fact the N of Yeovil is higher than much of the surrounding countryside.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 26/10/2020 20:54

I expect the fact it’s in the south will have something to do with it, since covid appears seasonal in temperate climates.

PicsInRed · 26/10/2020 21:02

Poor Yeovil. Even covid won't move there.

m0therofdragons · 26/10/2020 21:19

@PicsInRed where do you live? We moved here from the south east and love it. Country parks in walking distance, theatre, cinema, restaurants, well regarded hospital, nice community, low crime... the town centre was built in the 70s so not pretty but so much more to a town than that.

Why do people always talk other places down?

😂 there's a reason we call it Yeo-vile!
Helenj1977 · 26/10/2020 21:23

It's an awful place. The people with CV are probably all so high on drugs they don't even know they have it.

vodkaredbullgirl · 26/10/2020 21:24

@PicsInRed yep its terrible Smile

Foxglovesandprimroses · 26/10/2020 21:26

It's really not that bad Hmm

Foxglovesandprimroses · 26/10/2020 21:29

A few weeks ago I went to the town centre and the shops and cafe I visited all took social distancing and hygiene very seriously, so maybe that's why. And the fact that it's not a tourist destination probably plays in its favour. There is a large college tho.

Torvean32 · 26/10/2020 21:30

There are places with 0 cases. Low population that are widely spread, low tourism , no college/uni, only a few schools.

Atalune · 26/10/2020 21:30

I lve a little ways from Yeovil... and I suspect the numbers are slightly higher there than where I am.

And the town centre is a dump. A real horror show. No amount of nine springs will change that. @m0therofdragons Grin

Secondary schools are slim pickings ..bucklers mead? No way! Westfields. Ummmm nah. Preston used to be the “good” one but not so sure now.

There is plenty of opportunity to socially distance I think and because of the small communities people don’t break the rules.

Dinocan · 26/10/2020 21:35

Ninesprings is nice but last time we went there was a syringe in the play park, has put me off somewhat. Maybe it’s because so few people from outside the area go there? I will say though that Yeovil hospital is bloody fantastic and one great thing about the area.

BlanchflowerTulip · 26/10/2020 21:43

I went to the 24 hour Tesco in Yeovil on the way to Glastonbury about 7 years ago and it did have very wide aisles.

Forgetmenot157 · 26/10/2020 21:47

People slate Somerset for some weird reason.. Much of it is beautiful and the people are much more friendly down here than anywhere else I have lived in the country.. Only shit thing about Yeovil... Is the football club :p

Atalune · 26/10/2020 21:47

The tescos is ok. It is a shame the underground car park is full of junked up cunts though.

m0therofdragons · 26/10/2020 23:01

The underground car park is tiny so hardly drug central Grin people have a weird idea of the town that’s very different from my experience of it. It’s a small town with a mixed demographic, like any town, and schools are much like the rest of south west. Mind you I saw someone praising my hometown on the property threads recently and I wouldn’t go back there if you paid me - drugs and stabbings galore.

Most people avoid it like the plague ( I live about 15 mins away ) and only go when absolutely desperate! It has long been seen as a town to avoid and a druggie town. The high street and Quedam just feel lifeless ( even pre covid ). Have always thought there's a funny vibe to Yeovil!

annabel85 · 27/10/2020 07:04

It seems to be the south west folk who are taking this virus seriously.

sanityisamyth · 27/10/2020 07:06

There are several parts of Yeo-Vile where community nurses and paramedics are not allowed to go without a police escort. It's a shit hole.

Chamberlai · 27/10/2020 07:11

It's like people who move to Newton Abbot from up country and are all proud of their homes in 'South Devon' Grin

LittleGungHo · 27/10/2020 07:21

I believe that having major employers like Leonardo allowing people to work from home.
There are lots of green spaces surrounding the town so you can get out without seeing people.
I do think the lack of motorway plays a part as major attractions are a considered journey.

Coffeecak3 · 27/10/2020 07:27

@Chamberlai I lived near Newton Abbot many years ago. I don’t get your reference but perhaps things have changed a lot.

Yeovil is a town of hard knocks, the kind of place where people wouldn't dare break the rules for fear of reprisals. Some may see that as too extreme but it's certainly effective in a pandemic.

Give over!

It's usually about population density.
