DS and his job in McDonalds

We're in a High Alert area.

First, let me start by saying McDonalds have been a superb employer through this. They closed before they were forced to and sent staff home on 2weeks' full pay.

Once the furlough scheme was announced they used it and set uploads of "social" things on line for staff, kept in touch with individuals to check on their welfare. Asked for volunteers to go back when they partially reopened and DS was one.

They've done loads to make the working environment as safe as possible, PPE, screens, reduced menu so they can operate with fewer (more spaced out) staff.

They have been incredibly busy, with record weekly takings on a regular basis since they reopened.

Staff are almost exclusively young people, the ones being vilified for bending all the rules outside of work.

They haven't had a single positive case. They've had a few isolate with symptoms but no actual cases in a staff of 150 in a high risk area.

Just because they're all young and not showing symptoms? Because the precautions are working? Because the young aren't as bad as they made out? Just luck?

Luck and the safe working practices. McDonald’s have a reputation to protect so will be doing everything they can not to have an outbreak.

Yes, I've been impressed with the precautions at work but if the young staff are ignoring the rules outside work, as people would have us believe, precautions at work won't prevent cases.

My workplace has had one outbreak but a distant team and it was their own socialising. Those following guidance have been fine. My experience is McDonald’s is a good employer so will have invested in the safety of its staff (not purely for staff but also reputation etc).

Some of the staff are going to school too, of course.

For McDonalds to be so successful, their business model is 100% focussed on watertight processes and absolutely zero opportunity to deviate. Either by mechanical means eg fixed 'dosing' machines for sauce etc or rigidly enforced protocols for EVERYTHING eg how many gherkin slices / how long to toast buns for.

The staff will be very used to being trained and supervised and will also understand that there is a company culture of compliance. I'd imagine they have excellent reward and recognition schemes in place to motivate their staff to follow their procedures as they are so key to their success.

All of that translated / transferred into a COVID Secure approach should make it pretty bomb proof

Like almost all environments, McDonald's have had some problems. My DP works closeby and some of his students work in this location. They have apparently been treated well and the staff have a long list of measures in place to keep them safe (as the OP mentioned)

I'm not slating McDonalds; I love it 😁

Good to hear, making me hungry. Not had a McDonalds for a couple of years.

All of the above I think. McDonald’s have built their reputation on being clean and trustworthy, so I’d expect excellent Covid secure practices. Maybe being in a working environment taking it so seriously rubs off and their employees take more than average care outside of work too.

McDonald’s are a great employer

DS worked there right through the pandemic with no issues. Went off to uni and had covid within 10 days 🤷‍♀️😅

op i agree

our youngsters have been superstars through this. Some of them have found themselves main breadwinner at home due to redundancies

their whole worlds have been turned upside down but they are coping so well....no cases here from our workforce either
