Covid is so unpredictable

I know that risks increase after 65-70 years old and if you have other underlying issues, but this virus is so unpredictable and even if your individual risks are low (mines low) I would still rather take every precaution possible to not get it as I believe not enough is known about this virus.

Well according to a huge proportion of MN, it’s nothing to worry about, just like the flu and if we were a bit concerned about it, we’re just hysterical.

Rabbitholebonkers · 26/10/2020 20:51

Well if we behaved like this every year because of flu, then yes that would certainly be a hysterical reaction.

What’s flu got to do with it?

@Sb2012 thank you for posting. We know that at the moment these extreme reactions in the young are rare, and hopefully this will not change. Interesting to note that the boy, Kai Chaudy had no known or diagnosed underlying conditions, and we are just done with a sunny summer with fresh air and sunshine.
In Spring there had been reports of a few children under ten with almost fatal reactions to covid, but I thought very few were reported on, and only after warnings from some prominent doctors in Italy (?) but in the media these were brushed off as, and I paraphrase the reports: “the children had very dark skin and lived in poverty In a tower block and the parents didn't speak english didn’t know how to feed or nourish their child or provide it with any vitamin d”

I have mid-dark skin btw, if needed as context.

I agree with you, OP - not enough known about the virus or the long-term consequences for those who catch it.

Helenj1977 · 26/10/2020 21:29

This is what worries me. Its flu for one person, ventilator for another. You just don't know how it will affect you.

PJsEveryday · 26/10/2020 21:47

Its the unpredictability that is so scary. Realistically my risk is low, but I have no idea if I could be one of those anomalies whereby I end up on a ventilator, or one of the many that just feel a bit off for a few days. I am and have been taking this virus seriously and have followed all the rules.

Treesofwood · 26/10/2020 22:21

Actually children are more likely to end up critically ill with flu than Covid. It's common enough that it only tends make the local news, not international.

Qasd · 26/10/2020 22:31

But that is true of all viruses so I advise you to take extra precautions going forward whatever happens with covid.

I say that as the latent of the child who ended up hospitalised with chicken pox but that is newsworthy so doesn’t count (but an example of when a virus can not behave as we expect when you think about it!)

nimbuscloud · 26/10/2020 22:37

Friend’s daughter - aged 31, fit, healthy- hospitalised twice. Second time for cardiac issues. Now sleeping 16 hours a day and her eyesight is wonky. Her dp also had it and fine now. Unpredictable is an understatement.

Actually that’s why we have a flu vaccine. My kids have just had theirs.

No vaccine for covid yet, hence why people are worried.

Treesofwood · 28/10/2020 07:58

But its true that children are more likely to get seriously ill with flu even with the vaccine. Which some years recently has been only 3% effective.

IheartNiles · 28/10/2020 08:04

These freak events also happen with chicken pox, flu and other viruses. It’s just being reported as it’s covid related.
