Outbreak at sorting office - how worried should we be?

Hi

There’s been a cluster of cases at the Royal Mail sorting office where my parents live. How worried should they be? They’ve long since given up on wiping down and quarantining post (although obviously started again now)

Tell them to leave post unopened in a corner somewhere for a few days (obviously washing their hands well after taking it in).

People might mock but there's no harm in being cautious - and there's a lot to be said for peace of mind.

Not worried at all.

There's practically no real world chance of there being virus on the post in quantity and quality enough to infect anyone.

Torvean32 · 26/10/2020 00:03

I wouldn't worry about it at all to be honest. I've never washed and sanatised any item delivered to my house.

Topseyt · 26/10/2020 04:13

I would see no need to worry about it at all. I never quarantined my post or any other deliveries and couldn't be arsed wiping down shopping.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 26/10/2020 05:07

Why would you be worried about it? In theory if you could catch Covid that easily fron items then everyone who has bought food from the supermarket would be catching it.

RedRiverShore · 26/10/2020 06:08

I wouldn't worry at all

Mindymomo · 26/10/2020 06:18

We’ve always washed our hands after any post or deliveries.

Panicsettingin · 26/10/2020 06:37

I just googled “outbreak at sorting office” to see if it’s anywhere near me.
There have been outbreaks in loads of sorting offices, I hadn’t even heard about them.
I can’t worry more than when the Amazon man was sneezing whilst handing over a parcel!

maddiemookins16mum · 26/10/2020 06:45

We’ve been dealing with post at work throughout, up to 800 envelopes a day. We just use a pair of disposable gloves each day and wash our hands afterwards.

RemyHadley · 26/10/2020 06:53

There are no recorded instances of covid spreading on packages of any kind.

Tests have been carried out which shows the virus doesn’t last long on paper/cardboard, but lasts a bit longer on plastic.

So maybe for peace of mind I’d pop enveloped and packages in a corner for a few days before opening them, but beyond that I wouldn’t worry.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 26/10/2020 07:51

I wouldn't worry at all. Open the post, discard the envelopes, wash hands. There's probably been outbreaks in a lot places we don't know about.

LilacPebbles · 26/10/2020 07:57

Not worried at all unless they literally live there, or work there.

happytoday73 · 26/10/2020 07:59

Do you parents have a fettush for licking large quantities of post? If yes.. Probably still not a high enough viral load to be concerned. If no... Not a problem.

Just stick with hand washing and social distancing

You really do not need to worry about this (unless you work at the sorting office in question).
