Understand the rules before having a go

Ok so maybe I'm a tad sensitive living in an area that has been subject to tighter restrictions since early August and now in Tier 3.
But this is really starting to piss me off.

Prompted by a post on local Facebook group. Someone asked whether a local pub is open, with people generally responding 'yes it is as long as you have a substantial meal'. Then others wading in saying 'we're in lockdown, all bars and restaurants have to close, they aren't allowed to be open'.
In August, people were ranting about people going on holiday from our area, saying they were selfish and breaking the rules. They weren't breaking the rules - it was even stated on the Gov pages that you could travel.
I've lost count of the MN posts where people are slagging people off yet haven't got the rules right.
People are finding the rules and all the changes confusing enough, without people who haven't bothered to keep up to date with the rules spouting crap.

Sorry, needed to rant and better on here where I'm not known than on FB.

I agree, I had a family member have a go for not visiting for them and my very vunerable grandparent because there aren't even any restrictions and im still going to the pub. All 3 areas are in Tier 2 (I reckon wille moving into Tier 3 soon too)

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 25/10/2020 10:38

It's scary that people aren't aware of what they can/can't do @Chickenfingers

Oh yes memorably a poster on here was shouted at ugly for suggesting going to an allotment counted as exercise when only a day later Micheal gove said in the press conference that going to an allotment counted as exercise - people are often very sure of rules that don’t exist!!

I tend to follow the rules s they are at the moment not the extra made you rules because they will be stricter shortly and then you missed out on stuff for longer! I went to the pub the night in March that boris “advised against it” I was really pleased in hindsight I did I still haven’t seen anyone I went to the pub with since that night so it would have been a long time if we had cancelled it!

GirlCrush · 25/10/2020 10:54

I miss most of the updates as I’m usually at work or catching up on housework

Working overtime so people can leisurely shop for their non essential items!

No idea what we can/can’t do so I carry on regardless

Don’t go out, don’t visit, no holidays, food shop delivered. Wear my mask

We aren’t all glued to the news

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 25/10/2020 11:01

@GirlCrush that is fully understandable - but my point was people who don't know what the rules are telling others what they can and can't do - when they aren't aware of the facts. I'm not glued to t he news either by the way.

A lot of people insist the rules say what they want them to rather than what they actually say.

BoredOfIsolation · 25/10/2020 11:14

I think some people just don’t think before they shout opinions on social media. And I don’t just mean by not checking what rules are actually in place either before stating something as fact.

There’s a previous post in this thread that says “No idea what we can/can’t do so I carry on regardless” for example. Now I did read the entire post and see they are being careful, using masks, minimising contact etc. I’m not criticising what they’re actually doing. But what they actually wrote, the sentence I picked out? Some people (and that’s usually me most of the time too), just skim posts — and that’s not a sentence I’d like the blatant rule-breakers to see so that they get to think “it’s not just me carrying on as normal”. I hope I’m making sense.

GirlCrush · 25/10/2020 11:14

Well rules change without a lot of us even knowing.... so that’s maybe why people insist they are right! Because they have changed....again!

Tolerance is needed to get us through this. Just point out there’s been a change in rules!

This is when the rules have been in place for weeks though - the posts about people going on holiday when they shouldn't - although actually they could - were 5 weeks after our rules changed. The changes re pubs and restaurants only being allowed to open to serve substantial meals have been well publicised for weeks in our area. So I'm sorry if I'm not feeling overly tolerant.

That's fair enough but half the rules spouted on here back in April never existed in the first place and no doubt it'll go the same way again!
islockdownoveryet · 25/10/2020 14:17

Oh yes I remember March early April on here saying that someone going for daily exercise to the local shop every day was wrong why ? Because Boris said limit trips so let's all never leave the house .
I think it's been proven what it's done to peoples mental health going for a daily walk to pick up a newspaper with no other person in the shop is no more risk than going round Asda with 100+ people you pass .
Some even saying any exercise at all outside is wrong and if you have a garden there is no need to go out anyway .
And don't get me started on the 1 hour limit of being outside.
It's opinion that's all I think going outside everyday is better for my physical and mental health and if I do catch covid I'll be much able to fight it off with being fitter than if I never left the house .
Someone will disagree and say if I don't leave the house I won't catch or pass on Covid but I'm not prepared to live like that nor would I expect others too .

Aragog · 25/10/2020 16:36

Lots of people I sit they know the rules when they're don't. Lots have even less understanding of what is law and what is guidance, and the difference between the two.

A lot of MNetters are very vocal about telling others what they can and can't do, and don't make any attempt to find out before shouting the odds.

There appears to be a significant minority on here who would have the whole country locked down and not allowed to do anything outside the home at all, and not slowed deliveries, non essentials, nothing. Fun isn't allowed in a pandemic and all that.

CrappleUmble · 25/10/2020 16:44

You couldn't be more right. MN should implement some kind of quiz people have to pass before they're allowed to be critical of anyone else's compliance with the rules. The best ones are when they get corrected, clearly realise they were wrong and start bullshitting about spirit of the guidance or similar and pretend their point remains unchanged. I always laugh.

IrenetheQuaint · 25/10/2020 16:50

Yes, the failure to understand the difference between law and guidance is quite wearing - understandable to begin with as no one is born knowing these things, but lots of posters have it explained to them and just refuse to take it in.

Yeah, they act like people pointing it out are somehow doing something wrong. As if it isn't vastly important that people understand they're allowed to do things that aren't forbidden by law.
Frouby · 25/10/2020 16:57

The best thread I remember was someone whose child had outgrown his shoes/trainers and the op asking if they could try shoes on in shops.

And then being told by posters that shoes weren't fucking essential and he shpuld just go barefoot as it was summer anyway and his feet would toughen up.

It was at that point I stopped reading corona threads.

I wish I'd seen that one. I'd have had great fun.
