Test & Trace - Is this fit for purpose?

firsttimedad79 · 23/10/2020 19:13

Exactly that!

2nd eldest step son got a positive test result this morning (email was about 0530).

Haven't heard from the test & trace setup at all today?

Does it actually work?

We already know it's useless.
Think even Vallance said that with these cases increasing it's difficult to test and trace. He said it's more effective when there are less cases. Also, only effective if at least 80% cases being traced, think only around 60% being traced.
So no, not fit for purpose.

Chickenandegg8 · 23/10/2020 19:37

I’d say no....
My mum got her positive result days after taking the test. It then took until day 10 after her test for track and trace to phone her and ask for close contacts.
It then took them another 4 days to email my dad to tell him he needs to isolate. He got the email on the 21st October to tell him to isolate for 14 days from the 7th October.... Confused
And they wonder why it’s spreading....

Chickenandegg8 · 23/10/2020 19:38

Sorry that should be got her positive 6 days after taking the test

We are not too bad here. This was the lads 2nd test in as many months. His older brother and our youngest have also been tested recently.

The youngest ones results came back 12 hours after the test, the other tests were all just over 24 hours.

But the other side of it is, you can't get the financial help here until test & trace have informed you to self isolate as you need the nhs ID!

Sometimes think it'd be best to just post on social media that you've tested positive to alert people than wait for t&t. Of course that wont help with needing proof for employers of benefits etc

Definitely not fit for purpose.

Oly4 · 23/10/2020 20:34

Probably not but most people now know that a positive test means you and your household isolate.
If you’re worried about close contacts can you text them to let them know? That would be a fab thing to do.
Hope all goes well

Heatherjayne1972 · 23/10/2020 20:41

It’s not great
Especially when people aren’t getting their results at all. Or getting a positive result when they haven’t even had a test ( 2 people I know!)
Add into that a great number of people who come into contact with a lot of customers/ clients / patients etc and have been told to switch the app off. - police ,all healthcare workers, supermarket staff, teachers etc etc

It needs improving for sure

Tangledyarn · 23/10/2020 21:56

It seems to vary. My friend didnt have any contact from it for 24hrs but once they got in touch it was all dealt with smoothly, immediate contacts informed and then local public health and local tt in touch the same day as hes an allied health professional and public facing. On the other hand some people seem to have no contact all..

wendz86 · 23/10/2020 22:39

I got contacted today quite soon after finding out person had positive test. However they tried calling for my children who were also contacts and i couldn't hear the person, it was a really bad line. We are isolating anyway so fine but not helpful if you didn't know.

hedgehogger1 · 23/10/2020 22:57

What's bad is that I'm reading about teachers and TAs being exposed to Covid, not being contacted by track and trace and being told because of this they need to return to work. It's just not safe

Cuppaand2biscuits · 23/10/2020 23:07

A friend of mine tested positive this week. She has been contacted by someone asking her to take part in some research but not by test and trace. When she told the researchers they said that they can't contact everyone for Test and Trace.
I'm confused by the whole thing. We have to ask our customers to check in using the NHS app but then when we've had customers phone to tell us they've tested positive, we haven't had to contact any other customers as it's assumed they are all at least 2 metres apart.

Rowgtfc72 · 23/10/2020 23:16

Dd tested positive and test and trace contacted us within 24hrs of the result. Then three days later, and three days later etc. Weve each had 4 phone calls and dh and I have had about 6 texts. I'm feeling stalked.
I've been for a test today. If that's positive and they ring I'm going to ask them not to ring back.

Ulpo · 23/10/2020 23:35

Nope DS positive and not one of his housemates have been contacted.

TravellingSpoon · 24/10/2020 10:13

3 times I have had a little notification pop up on the app to say someone I have been in contact with has had a positive test, but then it just disappears never to be seen again.

1940s · 24/10/2020 10:15

Tests show a 93% false positive anyway. The whole thing is a shitshow

I don't think that's right. Where did you find that stat? False positives are an issue, particularly when the tests are screening asymptomatic people ( like NHS and care workers) - but nowhere near 93%.

From the Lancet:

The current rate of operational false-positive swab tests in the UK is unknown; preliminary estimates show it could be somewhere between 0·8% and 4·0%

They also say that the rate could translate into a significant proportion of false-positives when there is lots of asymptomatic testing and a low prevalence of the virus. With symptomatic people and high viral prevalence it's less of a problem.

mightyducks · 24/10/2020 15:58

it’s absolutely not fit for purpose, it cannot cope with the numbers of infections we now have, making it pretty meaningless. The reality is that with the numbers we now, trace and trace is completely ineffective and should be switched off, once the rate of community transmission gets to a certain rate, but the contracts have been given out now, the Government won’t admit is now completely out of its depth

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 24/10/2020 16:07

It's effing pointless. I've had 4 different emails this week telling me to isolate - each one with different instructions on it. Have also had 5 calls, each time the caller can't clarify what the proper protocol is. It's a colossal shitstorm....

NoGoodPunsLeft · 24/10/2020 16:20

LOL Grin

What a load.of tosh

1940s · 24/10/2020 17:40

@NoGoodPunsLeft Dominic Raab has quoted in multiple interviews on sky news (lots of videos online) that the tests give a 93% false positive.

1940s · 24/10/2020 17:51

@cathyandclare Dominic raab has said this multiple times. Google it, videos from sky news and ITV

cathyandclare · 24/10/2020 17:55

fullfact.org/online/dominic-raab-93-percent/

Whatever he said, and I think he didn't express himself well, the fact is that there aren't 93% of false positives.

NoGoodPunsLeft · 24/10/2020 18:49

It was taken out of context & he was talking out of his arse!

What he meant was that testing on arrival at an airport would only find 7% of people positive, wait 5 days & it's up to 88%. Basically testing on arrival would miss people who are pre-symptomatic.

So tests are not giving 93% false positives
