Severe headache?

ihearttc · 23/10/2020 08:22

DS1 is 15 (in Y11) and care home Wednesday night with a severe headache. Gave him painkillers and just thought he was exhausted from school. It’s now Friday morning and the headache is still there, nothing is shifting it. He finished Wednesday for half term so no school yesterday. He has no other symptoms apart from aching legs. No temp, no cough and no loss of smell. Is it worth testing him? He is literally never ill so it’s a bit bizarre.

@Northernsoullover

I'm not angry. I'm just fed up with people who have symptoms pilloried because they can't honestly say that they have the 'top 3' when so many 'worried well' treat it as a day out. I work in communicable diseases so have a lot of experience of Covid symptoms and saying (as you did) that the OP would be lying is quite unfair. Direct your feelings about this to the government maybe? I wish the government would stress to people that they should not test if they are free of symptoms but widen the existing ones to include headaches and sinus pain as we are seeing an awful lot of this in positive cases
But anyone that says yes to having any of the main symptoms when in reality they don't would be lying though. It's not an unfair question - it was a reasonable question as that is the reality of the situation - some people are lying to get a test. Perhaps OP had another way of getting a test - through their employer maybe. For example, NHS workers can get tests for their households and many other businesses are purchasing their own private tests too.

Direct my feelings? About what? I didn't give my feelings or opinion in my post. I was clearly stating the facts about about process for testing. I haven't offered a view on whether I agree/disagree with the testing process and criteria for testing. Again you are trying to put words into my mouth.

Have you not thought about why they are not widening the existing criteria?

Might be worth downloading the Zoe app. I’ve been reporting symptoms for a while (well, lack of) and on the day I reported a severe headache they sent me an email inviting me to book a test due to the symptom I had reported.

Ormally · 23/10/2020 13:54

Yes, take a look at the notes and info on the web pages where you can obtain the Zoe app. This also gives you some statistics regarding reported symptoms and the link to eventual test result, and headache lasting days is a hugely common one. At the very least, he should probably be home as this would be the early infectious period they are interested in, if he is out and about and does turn out to be positive.

Every time I log I have a headache on the Zoe covid app, it asks me to have a test.

ihearttc · 23/10/2020 14:26

He’s definitely at home. His school finished on Wednesday for half term so he was home all yesterday and today. He is supposed to be revising and doing homework but said he can’t concentrate as his head is too painful. I have actually got a postal test here. Our HT (I’m a a TA) gave all the staff one in case we needed it and couldn’t get one (said said the kids can’t come in without staff!) so I could just use that. I will download the app and see what it says.

I have just received my positive test and headache and body ache were my only symptoms.

@ihearttc

Thank you everyone, I’m not one to jump at the first sign of something and assume it’s Covid however it’s so unusual for him to say that he’s in pain and to ask for painkillers that it must be bad. I shall see if I can get him a test. Assume no one else needs one as we don’t have symptoms?
I really think you should get advice from a Gp. I'm not saying it can't be Covid but we also shouldn't assume it has to be Covid. It can't hurt to get a doctor's opinion.
ihearttc · 24/10/2020 10:38

That was next on my list if it turns out to be negative. I know if I contact GP now they will just say have you tested. It’s also slightly more complicated in that one of DS’s best friends died a few months ago from a brain tumour so the entire friendship group is hyper aware of headaches understandably. I realise the chances of it being a tumour rather than Covid or any other virus are very slim but it’s been very hard for them all to come to terms with. I think the fact that DS never ever complains about a headache indicates something is going on, just need to work out what. I used my test I had at home for him and sent it off yesterday, now just got to wait for the results.

Results came back this morning and it was negative. Don’t know whether to be relieved or worried because if isn’t Covid then what on earth could it be? He is 15, normally very fit and active (plays sport etc) and has literally spent the last 3 days laying on the sofa. His head is so painful, has aching legs and feels warm. No cold/virus symptoms at all.

You need to contact his GP I guess. Has he had his eyes tested recently? Poor lad. In some ways it being Covid would have at least given you a reason behind his Headaches.

ihearttc · 25/10/2020 09:18

Had his eyes tested last year and were absolutely fine but could definitely get them done again. Our GP is a nightmare and isn’t really seeing anyone but will try tomorrow. At least it’s half term I suppose and he isn’t missing school.

YEs he definitely needs to have medical attention now if he has a negative test. Try 111

Mydogdoesntlisten · 25/10/2020 10:11

I agree re trying 111.
DS 19 had a terrible headache last year and 111 arranged a same day GP appointment at our local walk in centre.
It turned out to be a migraine which he made a miraculous recovery from after taking the medication they prescribed. I would definitely be inclined to get it checked out.
Hope your DS feels better soon.

Porcupineinwaiting · 25/10/2020 14:52

Def ring the GP. It still sounds like it could be COVID but you/they cant presume that as he's had a negative test. But lots of viruses will give similar symptoms so try not to worry unduly.
