Anyone else feel that this is great news and will help save a lot of jobs?

OP posts:

It’s not ‘from Rishi’ is it though? It’s from borrowing that we and our children will be paying off for years.

I'd rather be paying it off for years if it helps people keep their jobs. It's good news OP.

It will be backdated to Aug so will help people like Manchester who have been in restrictions a while

I'm unsure about Wales as they closed shops too. Will they get support? It seems to be specific to hospitality, accommodation and leisure.

Shame he's still not addressing the estimated 3 million self employed he excluded in March. At that time he said "we'd leave no-one behind" but then changed his tune to "we can't help everyone". Trouble is he's using the same criteria as he did in March, i.e. declared earnings for 2018/19 which basically excluded people who started a business after March 2019 or who gave up their job and started a business later on in 2018. Nor has he addressed company directors. Nor has he addressed people who received "one off" incomes in 18/19 such as pension lump sums etc that don't recur in 2020. The guy is pretty incompetent to be honest.

I caught three types

Self employed increase
Grants for specific hit sectors
Job scheme changed a lot - think it might be all sectors? Not sure

Yes but fewer jobs at the end the greater the burden on the taxpayers that are left. Swings and roundabouts.

It's getting less generous but a lifeline for many, not everyone.

I've not worked since march got £250 a month on furlough, lucky to get this as was between contracts and was earning £250 a night so they took a monthly from this as a diary full of future work wasn't acceptable.
Dh got nothing.
They left a lot of people behind, not everyone who works in hospitality or entertainment is salaried or even paid regularly, these are the ones left out.

I think it will make a difference but employers are still being required to fund a quarter of an employee’s wages.

If there is no work for them to do (which I suspect will be the case in a lot of tier 2 hospitality venues for example) this won’t be affordable.

If it does help to keep enough jobs to do this - which is debatable but not impossible - then yes that’s true.

My point was more that it’s not really Rishi’s money he is splashing around, it’s ours (or at least our future debt).
