New areas going into Tier 2 - what's the threshold?

Just announced Slough, Stoke and Coventry going into Tier 2...

My area now has a fairly high rate AFAIK (over 100 per 100,000) - I'm wondering what the threshold is when areas get moved into tier 2? Is there anything clear on this?

Not sure, but I think it's more about pressure on hospitals than cases per 100,000. Otherwise, my area should have been in Tier 2 a while ago - we have more cases per 100,000 than many areas who have been in Tier 2 since the tier system started, but we are still in Tier 1.

I have assumed that it's because the infections are mostly concentrated in the student population, and that there is therefore limited pressure on hospitals at present. I reckon it's only a matter of time before we're moved up though.

It's down to loal politicking.

ECC pushed to be in Tier 2, days later they want the 10pm closing time abolished.

It's all down to money and being ultra Tory there. But having been given their handout, they want now to keep their business cronies going.

Whereas the Government are hell bent on unishing Sadiq Khan and Andy Burnham. (Labour, both).

HairyFloppins · 22/10/2020 15:36

I'm in Stoke and our council leader wrote and asked for us to be added to tier 2 to try and clamp down on infections.

No idea what the threshold is though sorry.

ChaChaCha2012 · 22/10/2020 15:38

There's definitely an element of politics in it. My county looked likely to all go into Tier 3, but the areas with Conservative MPs now appear to be staying in Tier 2, despite having higher rates than (and using the same hospitals as) neighbouring Labour constituencies.

booboo24 · 22/10/2020 15:57

I'm Tier 1, very high student numbers across 2 uni's, very low case numbers through the rural parts, but our LA has asked to move the whole county up a tier. The government have blocked for now. I'm guessing the cash bailout for Tier 2 is guiding the LA'S stance in our case as there's no other reason for the move yet. I'm guessing the student spread will creep up the age groups though sadly. It's a matter of time for all of us I think, a gradual full lockdown under a different name

RedToothBrush · 22/10/2020 16:04

Stoke-on-Trent, Coventry and Slough are to move into tier two restrictions on Saturday, the government has announced.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said in all of these areas the infection rate was over 100 per 100,000 people.

HoneyBee03 · 22/10/2020 16:06

I've just read that the areas are over 100 per 100,000 and cases are doubling quickly. So perhaps the rate at which cases are increasing is also taken into account.

booboo24 · 22/10/2020 16:09

I think it's rates over 100 per 100,000, age group it's affecting, speed of increase and ITU capacity

StarCat2020 · 22/10/2020 16:11

the areas are over 100 per 100,000
But not every area with over 100 per 100,000 is in Tier 2.

StarCat2020 · 22/10/2020 16:12

Sounds like you hit the nail on the head there!!

AlexaShutUp · 22/10/2020 16:13

Indeed not. We are at nearly 300 cases per 100,000, and rising rapidly, but still in Tier 1.

Spodge · 22/10/2020 16:13

There is no (published) objective threshold as far as I know and I have looked hard. Have asked my MP for clarification.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 22/10/2020 16:15

When Manchester went into greater restrictions, no household mixing etc on 3st July, their cases were 30 per 100k. There are only 6 areas in England below that now, and they probably won’t be by next week.

They're making it up as they go along.

booboo24 · 22/10/2020 16:17

We are T1 but well over 100 per 100,000, however its mainly students at the moment, our rate decreased this week and our hospitals are not yet filling up, I think that's why we haven't been moved up. Our LA has requested it though so guess we won't be in T1 for much longer!

Thirtyrock39 · 22/10/2020 16:18

We are tier 1 east mids close to a tier 2 city and I'm really surprised there hasn't been any mention of us going up as our numbers are high. Hospitals are ok though so maybe that is the difference ?

Dustballs · 22/10/2020 16:22

Why’s Bristol not in Tier 2? It’s way over 100 per 100,000.

Dustballs · 22/10/2020 16:24

We’re below 100 but in Tier 2. The whole thing’s a bloody nonsense.

RedToothBrush · 22/10/2020 16:28

@Dustballs

Correct!

Its frustrating isn't it?!

StarCat2020 · 22/10/2020 16:31

That is appalling

AlexaShutUp · 22/10/2020 16:34

Yes, StarCat2020, I think so. I haven't even heard any mention of us moving up, and it seems to me as if everyone is carrying on as if nothing is wrong!

SqidgeBum · 22/10/2020 16:45

I see Coventry has gone into tier 2 with 179 per 100k. My inlaws area has 178 per 100k but there hasn't been a mention of tier 2. There doesnt seem to be a threshold of numbers to enter tier 2. Maybe its population density?

Ecosse · 22/10/2020 17:04

The only metric that should be looked at is hospital capacity. We do not try to prevent every single death from any other condition and we cannot do do for COVID.

StarCat2020 · 22/10/2020 17:37

The only metric that should be looked at is hospital capacity
Regardless of the level of cases in that area?

Ecosse · 22/10/2020 17:42

Absolutely @StarCat2020. So long as as there are enough staff and hospital beds, there should be no need to go further than the tier 1 measures.

StarCat2020 · 22/10/2020 17:44

Absolutely
I don't agree but isn't that the beauty of these threads?
