Say they cancelled lockdown

So say lockdown was cancelled.

No more financial support.

Covid-19 spreads in your local area.

Apart from essentials, work, school, healthcare.

Would you go out socialising under these circumstances? Not indoors with family, but places you spend money, bowling, cinema, pub, farms etc.

We're middle of the road, not to lax not too panicky, middle of the road, like I said we would feel guilty if a pint out meant two weeks off school for the kids, but we will still go, all the tables people face away from their "bubble", but with Bluetooth app now following me around we could be unlucky one afternoon. But because of the app we have discussed pint v school attendance, which we didn't pre-app but it's another layer of consideration. (School clearly wins)

But even we would reduce our activities if Covid-19 secure measures were removed and infection rate inevitably spread locally.

I was just wondering where others pitch their risk. Just being nosey really, understand that there are so many aspects of people's lives that lead to their own personal risk assessment.

Not that the powers that be will let us but if measures are removed, infections will rise, for how long and how severe? can only go on best case worse case graphs.

And would that infection rate rise lead to millions of personally chosen self-lockdowns?

I would try (love) to live my life "as normal" in spite of the virus being everywhere. I am tolerant of risk.

whatswithtodaytoday · 22/10/2020 14:45

No. We won't start living normally again until, at the bare minimum, the people around us who are most vulnerable have been vaccinated. I would also want to see very low levels of community transmission of the virus - basically back to July numbers.

Coasterfan · 22/10/2020 14:47

@frozendaisy if measures were removed I would still go and take our own precautions where possible. None of us are vulnerable or in contact with anyone vulnerable. I know this argument does get shouted down a lot as we may be asymptomatic and pass it to someone who is in close contact with someone vulnerable but I think if all restrictions were lifted we need to make our own risk assessments and this is mine.

Dustballs · 22/10/2020 15:12

I think people would make their own risk assessments. People who felt comfortable going to the gym/pub/restaurants/cinemas would go ... those that didn't would stay at home.

It would be better if people made up their own rules (as they are doing now - and as we do in normal life). We'd all mind our own business then and trust and respect one another.

This is not working being nannied (by an incompetent) state.

frozendaisy · 22/10/2020 15:47

Oh I agree people would make their own risk assessment, and what's right for some is totally wrong for others.

Just interesting to see where that pendulum falls.

We are ok risk, we are not spring chickens, but there is that little niggle in the mind "what if we are the no underlying health concerns" that ends up in ITU. And for us if Covid-19 was rife locally a bowling or cinema trip wouldn't be worth that "what if niggle" but we are not hermits, never have been.

Boringly, my younger self would be ashamed!, we are middle-of-the-road nowadays.

I’m swaying between the 2 at the moment. I think I’d be more risk averse if the government stopped wading in and changing the rules all the time.

wondersun · 22/10/2020 15:57

Nope! Which is why our economy is so screwed. Poor healthcare provision / situation does not inspire risk taking / spending!

Wilkolampshade · 22/10/2020 15:59

Yes. I'd be out again.

secretllama · 22/10/2020 16:04

Yes I'd be out as normal.

Thanksitsgotpockets · 22/10/2020 16:09

I went to a gig in the ten days before lockdown when it must have been rife.
There were a few signs up to wash hands but that was it.
We stayed out of the main area on a quieter balcony whereas usually I'd want to be in amongst everyone.

Compared to that, places are well spaced out with much less people.
We're starting to work out where the places are that follow covid guidelines in a way that allows for a relaxed atmosphere and would welcome being able to meet friends in these venues.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 22/10/2020 16:13

Provided I still had a job then yes, I would do all those things. I'm happy to take the risk.

Nappyvalley15 · 22/10/2020 16:14

Yes.
Risk of dying if you are 15-44 = 0.03%; 45-64 =0.5%; 65-74= 3.1%; 75+=11.6%.
Risk of long covid 1 in 20 people suffering up to 8 weeks; 1 in 50 = 12 weeks.
For most people the odds are good. Balance that against living in fear and I would take my chances. I would still like some social distancing in place.

RonaLisa · 22/10/2020 16:14

OP, to answer your question: Yes, I would.

RonaLisa · 22/10/2020 16:16

OP, I'm not a spring chicken either, and have had Long Swine Flu, Long Pneumonia, Long Ordinary Flu, and Long Pleurisy. I'd still go out, though, if lockdown ended overnight. I've been ill enough to know that I'd rather have my normal life and work, and run the risk of being ill, than have this meaningless half-life.

MillieEpple · 22/10/2020 16:18

Its hard to answer. If thing were like they were in August id probably do most normal activities but with a bit of distancing, masks and handwashing thrown in. But if hospitals were overflowing, my neighbours were all seriously ill etc I would only do very essential things and wouldnt go near cafes etc.

Porcupineinwaiting · 22/10/2020 16:22

@Nappyvalley15 that's not quite correct. 1 in 20 get long COVID and 80% of those are still ill from at 4 months and counting.

NeverAMillionMilesAway · 22/10/2020 16:29

No.
Even when lockdown was lifted over summer, I restricted my activities through choice, and only went out when necessary (including necessary for mental health to get out of the house)

Ecosse · 22/10/2020 16:30

Absolutely- I would be living as normal while taking precautions such as hand washing and social distancing.

I also wouldn’t be attending very high risk settings such as nightclubs.

Nappyvalley15 · 22/10/2020 16:34

Porcupine. Google it. Research from King's college suggests 2%of those with covid (bear in mind this is self report data) have symptoms for over 90 days.

DisgruntledGuineaPig · 22/10/2020 16:38

Yes. Im really not that worried about catching covid (and pretty sure i had it mildly back in March), I follow social distancing rules and wear a mask because they are the rules, not because I'm actively trying not to get covid.

SqidgeBum · 22/10/2020 16:39

I would probably go back to softplay and baby groups, and maybe the odd dinner out in a pub. So basically, I would go back to normal life and not think much about it. I didnt do much bowling/clubbing etc before covid. I would use more hand sanitizer, maybe wear a mask in the softplay. That's probably about it.

frozendaisy · 22/10/2020 16:43

@RonaLisa you sound like a flu magnet you poor thing. Interesting that you still would go out.

OP posts:
MzHz · 22/10/2020 16:52

@frozendaisy

The only thing I would do is go swimming under some misguided belief chlorine water kills the virus.
You know chlorine is bleach right?

It’s not misguided at all.

And the evidence of virus on surfaces now is saying that the chances of contracting through surface exposure are minuscule.

Enjoy your swim :)

frozendaisy · 22/10/2020 16:52

I so want the restrictions lifted, but also think financial support will still be needed and can't see the government doing both.

There is an interesting mix of responses, not everyone clearly would go to the socially busy places if there were not masks or any physical distancing.

It seems that Covid-19 would spread more right now without restrictions, and no one can know "how much" and if it would be more beneficial to open up or not.
