Self isolation with kids

Good Evening.
Im a single mum to 3 children. I work in a nursery and my youngest attends that same nursery. However we had a child test positive for covid and ive been told I need to self isolate. I have no one to depend on so my question is, should I take my other 2 children (10 and 8) to school or keep them off as I cant leave the house 🤷🏼‍♀️ What do I do about shopping? I have no symptoms what so ever but im aware they can take up to 14 days to show hence the isolation
Thanks for any help

Can you ask a friend to take the older children?

Can you book a delivery for food?

MasksGlovesSoapScrubs · 21/10/2020 23:05

You won't be able to take your children, no.
Can you get a delivery?
My dad is a cabby and people would pay the fare for a taxi for him to pick the shopping up. This was at the beginning of lockdown.

Freddiefox · 21/10/2020 23:05

When you say you have no one, do your children have friends parents that could help out? I would happily help out another parent get their children to school

urbandictictionary123 · 21/10/2020 23:10

I have no one really, I dont come into contact with anyone on the school run, I stay in the car and watch the kids run into class from there so though I could still do that 🤷🏼‍♀️

School run do what you’ve suggested

Food - try FB, look for your local covid volunteer groups - council may also have details of volunteers who are happy to help with shopping for you etc. Do you have any neighbours’ details?

Good luck!

toomuchtoworryabout · 22/10/2020 04:57

I think you will have to keep your children off school if you have no one else to take them op.
Self isolation means complete isolation, ie. not leaving the house at all, so even though you would only be in the car, you are still breaking the rules.
If you are seen by other staff or parents who know you should be isolating and they report you, you could be fined. This has actually happened at my school - people love to report people!
As for shopping, can you book an online delivery?

ChangingStates · 22/10/2020 05:25

I would be similar to you, I would drive the kids to school and not get out- 2 weeks is a long time to keep them off if they don't have to be and driving them is contact free.
Delivery for shopping, or local group but if that's not possible I am sure the rules allow for a shopping trip if there really is no other way to get food, mask & gloves and pick a time when it's quiet like very early in the morning/ late at night.

The rules are really clear, and don't allow for this (picture from NHS)
Can you get an online delivery? Go on your local Facebook page and put out a request for help? Are there still support hubs in your area?
With regards school, could you call them and ask them what it is best to do, it should be a situation they have contingency plans for - they may say it is best to stay home and the school provide remote learning or be able to suggest the bed alternative plan.
Good luck

I am going against the grain here, but I would probably tell no one you’re isolating, and keep dropping the kids off without leaving the car (as you usually do anyway). Zero contacts and needs must.

There is definitely a loophole so that you can go and get shopping if you have no other way of getting food. It’s deep in gov.uk somewhere, I’ll try and find it.

ukgift2016 · 22/10/2020 07:06

Take the kids to school. The rules are the possibly infected person self isolates but the rest of the household carries on with their daily lives.

Unless you show symptoms.

Lemons1571 · 22/10/2020 07:10

This is what the law says;

(vi) to obtain basic necessities, such as food and medical supplies for those in the same household (including any pets or animals in the household) where it is not possible to obtain these provisions in any other manner,

Where does it say that Lemons? In the "Guidance for people who have been..a contact of a person who has had a positive test result forCOVID-19" it doesn't say anything about exceptions, unless "you, or those you are living with, have significant conditions such as learning disabilities, autism or serious mental illness."

That suggestion is completely fine, ignore the lockdown rule fetishists who suggest overwise

MarjorytheTrashHeap · 22/10/2020 07:40

I was recently isolating due to close contact with a positive case and made arrangements with the school to drop my child off 15 minutes late and collect her 20 minutes early so that there were no other parents around at the time. I live across the road and it's a village so I walked her over while there was nobody about, but you could go in the car and depending on the location possibly drop your child right at the entrance if it's not busy? I didn't even go right up to the school. DD rang the bell at the gate and they opened it and then met her at the door.

toomuchtoworryabout · 22/10/2020 08:00

Please just be careful op - you say you work in the nursery that your child attends and they have sent you home from work to self-isolate. I assume some of the other parents know the situation too?

If you are seen doing the school run, even in your car, you could be reported and fined.

I’m not judging or scaremongering or telling you what to do before I get accused of that!
I just want you to think about that aspect because this has actually happened to someone I know at my school.

Mindymomo · 22/10/2020 08:17

I would do as you are doing, dropping them off from car and try and get food delivered. If not connect to local Facebook groups and ask for help.

hedgehogger1 · 22/10/2020 08:17

If you can't get online shopping from any local supermarket you can do a free trial of amazon prime and get it delivered by prime now

OpheliasCrayon · 22/10/2020 08:20

You don't leave your car anyway. Totally fine. Anyone else saying different is frankly ridiculous.
If that's how you drop your children off anyhow I really don't see how anyone could think it was rational for your children to miss going to school.

Mintjulia · 22/10/2020 08:21

Call the school and explain the situation. Or what about a colleague from Nursery?

Are you in a parish? Most churches have a group doing shopping for vulnerable people so check their web site.

urbandictictionary123 · 22/10/2020 09:20

Thank you all for your comments. I rang the school and explained and they said its ok to carry on dropping off whilst in car and ive arranged to pick up 20 mins later on my own, the kids will go into after school club which they love anyway. They only have tomorrow left now as it's half term next week anyway. Luckily I did a big shop before isolation started so I have enough to last us for a few days then after that il try the prime shopping so, thanks for that Idea too. Thanks all for your comments and advise.
Ive got a date with my marigolds and dirty dishes so best go get ready for that 🙄😅 keep safe
