How do I find out how many Covid admissions in my local hospital

And how near to capacity ITU is.

Phone and ask them.

You may not be able to find those figures at hospital level. I know they're only published at Local Health Board level in Wales (and only once a week). You can get figures for English NHS regions here: coronavirus.data.gov.uk/healthcare - I don't know whether there's data at a lower level than that somewhere else as I live in Wales so mostly take an interest in the Welsh figures.

Twizbe · 19/10/2020 09:53

Curious why you want to know?

Frazzled2207 · 19/10/2020 09:56

these are not generally published - you can get data per region on the website above .Local media sometimes have more info though.

missyB1 · 19/10/2020 09:57

Those figures are known and usually disseminated only to hospital staff. Dh is a Dr at our local hospital and all the staff get the figures weekly on email. There is no reason why the general public shouldn't know though and there should be a way of accessing the figures.

missyB1 · 19/10/2020 09:58

They can definitely break the numbers down to per hospital and each ITU unit.

amicissimma · 19/10/2020 15:47

Not exactly what you want but this might be helpful. English hospital Stats. I think the one you want is the bottom one: Weekly admissions. It shows Covid admissions by trust rather than by hospital.

Remmy123 · 19/10/2020 16:39

Why wouid you want to do that?? Large hospital in London has 11 patients - 2 in ICU if that helps

Watermelon999 · 19/10/2020 17:24

We get ours daily through our work email. Itu was full capacity last week. It lists numbers of covid positive patients in the hospital and number in itu and number awaiting tests. Also number who have tested negative and number of covid deaths. It doesn’t tell us what the reason for admission was.

Watermelon999 · 19/10/2020 17:37

NW England

ReginaaPhalange · 19/10/2020 17:40

Submit a freedom of information request to your health board

Flowers94 · 19/10/2020 17:41

I work in a NW hospital in greater manchester and we get a daily email informing how many covid patients there are, how many in crit care and how many in ICU

Ecosse · 19/10/2020 17:53

Interestingly critical care occupancy in Manchester is actually significantly lower than this time last year.

iolaus · 19/10/2020 19:37

We get them daily on the intranet for the 3 main hospitals in the trust (spaces in ITU, covid beds, non covid beds, spaces in mortuary, deaths, admissions etc)

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/10/2020 19:55

The local newspaper's Facebook page has an update most days in my area.

Frazzled2207 · 19/10/2020 21:20

This article is about GM but basically saying how difficult it is to get this sort of data right now

Okki · 19/10/2020 21:38

Our hospital posts it on their FB page.

Moondust001 · 19/10/2020 21:43

How would you know how to interpret the numbers? If you don't know how to access them, then how will you know what they mean? There was a huge fuss about Liverpool being 80% full and in danger over the weekend, until this morning when the Trust pointed out that at this time of year they are always 80% full, and 80% full doesn't mean full of Covid cases either.

This.

Local headline we had was on about local hospital being 78% full a week or so back. Making out its some proper odd horrific situation. While of course its not good for a hospital to be so full, my sister says the numbers are entirely usual for this time of year, and that last year they were actually more full than currently. Said it was basically clickbait..

(Thats not to say others are not struggling. Am not trying to minimize the risks or anything. Just about our local, where my sister works)

RedToothBrush · 19/10/2020 22:54

It depends ENTIRELY on where you live.

The MEN couldn't get this data for Greater Manchester NHS Trusts but this does NOT mean that you can't get it for your area.

I have found that some places this information is available.

There are three places to check:
Firstly some NHS trusts are publishing their covid case status on their own website.
Secondly, and probably your best place to check, is your local newspaper. Not all places have good local newspaper coverage but this seems to be the easiest place to find local information about this.
Thirdly, some councils are randomly publishing this data as part of their reporting on covid in the local area - but again this is patchy. For example you have Durham and Darlington which have full detail on this, but if you are in Hartlepool the council don't appear to even know there is a pandemic on and are seemingly in complete denial about covid.

So, unfortunately I can't give you a good answer to this question.

I think this data should be easily accessible and in the public domain across the country, but unfortunately there are a lot of people playing silly buggers over this.

From what I've read tonight, the only place with a very pressing issue in England is Liverpool. They are still early into contigency planning though - its serious and compounded by geographical issues and staffing problems - but its not hospitals overwhelmed stage yet either (and there is a little way to go til that though the point must be made that we don't want to get there either).

But yeah. This subject has fucked me off rather a lot tonight. Too much bollocks not enough transparency.

RedToothBrush · 19/10/2020 22:58

Also it needs stressing that the problem is in part due to hospitals always running at close to capacity with very little slack in the system.

The most important thing I think I've read tonight was from Liverpool's Medical Director:

Dr Cope said the situation in Liverpool is ‘more severe’ than the North West average, with more than 25% of inpatient beds in the city now occupied by covid patients.

That is in the setting of hospitals that had more than 90% bed occupancy with non-covid patients before this surge began.

And thats why we have a problem now.

Covidcovidcovid · 19/10/2020 23:00

My trust puts a lot on facebook and there's a Northern ireland dashboard updated daily - maybe your trust or area would have one?

Friend works in the hospital she says she sees it online before hearing it at work
