WWYD - DC and nursery

DC1 has been coughing 2 weeks, we all have but negative covid tests. I kept him off nursery last week even after negative tests coming back the friday evening, not because he is too ill but because I was trying to do the right thing and prevent others self isolating (especially the staff). He is BEGGING to go today, I'm shattered with him and his baby brother as the baby is a terrible sleeper but hes still coughing. Do I keep him off still or let him go? I could do a day of chucking him in front of the TV but hes actually more interested in a walk to the duck pond

Normally I wouldnt bat an eyelid at sending him in, he blatantly caught this at nursery anyway as we go nowhere else but I cant decide if it's unfair on the staff and other parents?! Cant think clearly this sleep deprived!

As long as you’ve had negative tests he can go to nursery, I’m sure if you let them know you’ve had the test they would be fine with it.

Atypicaltee · 19/10/2020 06:38

I'd send him back- my (very) little brother caught a cold at school and was coughing for England- but once he'd had a negative result the school let him back.

Northernbeachbum · 19/10/2020 06:40

Oh they are fine with it but I know if he gives someone else a cough they will be stuck self isolating too so last week I kept him off to prevent that.

This week I could do it again but I'm shattered! I dont want to be the cause of his wonderful nursery being under strain with staff self isolating for his non covid cough. On the flip side I know he got the cough there anyway!

If it’s from a cold he’s likely not contagious anymore anyway. Even with a positive Covid test you are allowed back out with a cough after the 10 days is up.

Northernbeachbum · 19/10/2020 06:56

Oh really @peanutbutterandfluff, in that case you have made his day he will be so happy! Like I said he caught it there as we dont go anywhere else so I guess it's probably been spread around there already

2 weeks is a long time for a cough, are you sure he hasn't developed a chest infection? It's supposed to be 3 weeks before you see a GP, but if his chest sounds at all rattly it would be good to take him sooner.

Northernbeachbum · 19/10/2020 07:28

@MRex oh really? I'll phone the GP for advice. He is still running around like a standard crazy toddler so hopefully it's nothing but always worth a call. Thank you!

Deffo send him back, as above, you don’t remain infectious for that long. The cough is a residual symptom from irritation of the lungs. The virus is likely long gone. Or it could indeed be a chest infection. That said, my DD is a cougher & she has 3/4 weeks of coughing repeatedly in winter & it’s only ever been an infection once! It’s often from nasal drip according to my GP, particularly if it’s worse at night! I’m told she’ll grow out of it .. 🙏🏼 Enjoy the peace & quiet!

Northernbeachbum · 19/10/2020 14:07

@MoirasRoses thanks, he skipped off into the building and knowing he wouldnt be infectious anymore was such a nice feeling! I dont THINK it's a chest infection as he seems so energetic, or could it still be?

Nobody can tell remotely. If you think he's ok then leave it a week and visit the GP.only if it's still persisting then.

dementedpixie · 19/10/2020 15:36

Coughs can linger for weeks. If his test is negative he can go back

Keepdistance · 19/10/2020 15:42

My 2 had a cough for 8w when i think we had covid.

Are you giving vitamin d?
I find olbas oil on a nearby tissue can help at night

@Spaghettihooplas

That.

Covid is not the only illness and a chest infection may still require treatment, even if he isn't infectious.

Northernbeachbum · 19/10/2020 17:31

GP is calling back tomorrow about it Smile
