Can you visit a friend who lives in tier 1 if you live in tier 2?

I've tried googling and can't find the answer.

I live in an area that has just moved to High (tier 2). I live right near the border (literally the next street is the borough border) so have lots of friends who live a mile away in the Medium level area.

I understand the rules about visiting people in the High area, but is it based on geographics or the fact that you are a resident in an area?

So for example, as a High area resident, can I or can I not go into my friends house who lives across the border in the Medium level area?

No you can’t go in their house. You have to follow your areas restrictions no matter where in the country you go. You can see them outside though.

tier travel

This article suggests you can travel between tier 2 and 1.

Yes you can travel between the tiers but not go inside a house if your from tier two. So op could travel to friends area and meet them outside but not go into their house or meet them in a restaurant or pub.
Letsnotargue · 18/10/2020 21:20

I read something that said if you travel between areas you have to stick to the higher of the two tiers. So you would have to stick with tier 2 if you go elsewhere, but your friend would also have to stick to tier 2 if she came to you.

LilyPond2 · 18/10/2020 21:20

The rules are based on where you live, so if you live in Tier 2 you are not allowed to visit a friend indoors even if the friend lives in Tier 1.

Shylo · 18/10/2020 21:21

Yes to Racoons advice .... apparently the rules for the higher area apply, so if you go to your friend or if they come to you tier 2 rules apply and so you can only meet outdoors

It’s bloody ridiculous but there you go, I’m sure Boris knows best Hmm

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 18/10/2020 21:22

You can’t meet inside, you have to follow the guidelines according to your home not where you have travelled to

DonLewis · 18/10/2020 21:22

Yeah, the way I understand it is that you take your restrictions with you.

Sorry, why is it ridiculous to avoid spreading it from an area of high incidence to a lower one? On the contrary, it would seem ridiculous to even wonder if it might be acceptable.
Letseatgrandma · 18/10/2020 21:48

I can go from my Tier 1 house, to work in my Tier 2 workplace, then to the pub in my Tier 1 town with fellow Tier 1 friends though, yes? Just not with any Tier 1 friends?

Letseatgrandma · 18/10/2020 21:49

Sorry, I meant just not with any Tier 2 friends!

Pertella · 18/10/2020 21:49

Because some tier 2 areas have a lower incidence than neighbouring tier 1 areas.

How does it stand if you work in tier 2 but live in tier 1?

The friend you'd be visiting in the tier two place you work can't have people in their home.

If you were inviting the friend to your tier one home then it's the same scenario as OP and they can't socialise in your home.

You can still travel between areas for work, and outdoor socialising.

Xuli · 19/10/2020 07:04

I'm still unclear and I can't find anything online about this either.

So if you live in tier 1 but work in tier 2, basically you have to keep to tier 2 rules even when you're back home in tier 1?

We live in tier 1. I can visit my family and my neighbours. But DH, who works in tier 2 (and we're not talking just popping in to the office working), should stick by tier 2 rules all the time?

That wasn’t my understanding of it-I thought it was based on where you lived. It does all get a bit nonsensical though when you are crossing borders all the time for work.

Xuli · 19/10/2020 07:22

It does - if you're travelling into a higher tier 2 area to work with the public, it doesn't make any sense that you can just go and hang out in another tier 1 house

Daisy03 · 19/10/2020 07:31

It’s about minimising contact.
If you live in tier 1 but work in tier 2 even with the public you should hopefully be taking precautions to be Covid secure (obviously isn’t always that easy) and that prevents you carrying it to those in tier 1.
Not perfect but most people do have to go to work
