Central Scotland - more of a rant really.

So we’ve had restrictions that have been stricter than tier 3 for the past week or so but you wouldn’t know it. No pubs or restaurants have been open in the central belt and Nicola told us to stay home unless we had a holiday booked.

But it’s October holidays so my Facebook is full of people on holiday, all over the UK. Loads of people have left the central belt and went all over the country. People I know booked last minute things to get away. The latest craze seems to be mountain climbing (I’ll admit I’m jealous of that one as my health means I can’t do it) but 100s of people out every weekend climbing hills apparently they are really busy.

So tomorrow all the schools go back and all these children who have been all over the place all get to mix again.

I guess my rant is what was the point of the 16 day restrictions? Shutting the pubs and restaurants just harmed those businesses in the central belt as a lot of people just travelled outside the area.

I'm in tier 2 England and would have been going on holiday to the highlands next Friday had I not recently caught Covid. Dh will be still in his SI period even if I'm feeling well by then.

Had that not happened we'd have gone.

As travel is allowed we wouldn't have been able to get our money back if we'd just cancelled. I'm not about to waste a few hundred pounds.

Fwiw if we'd been there we were staying in a SC flat as just our household of 2. We'd have used local restaurants but kept ourselves well distances as I'm Clinically vulnerable to this virus.

The owner of the flat was disappointed but understanding when we cancelled. He was keen for us to be able to go there soon if possible - presumably as they'd like to make a living!

If I'm well and Dh doesn't get any symptoms we will probably go away somewhere for a night or two, within England.

It's permitted.

I completely understand the RULES that prebooked holidays were ok hence my point was about people who booked up after NS announced the new restrictions or went to their caravans which they don’t need to book anyway. And all the people having day trips from the central belt to other areas.

I’m not covid scared sitting in my house for months and months either because tomorrow I’ll be back in a classroom with absolutely no social distancing (ASN) and I’m ok with that. To me the rules just don’t make any sense Confused but like I said we will see in a few weeks time if they’d had any impact

I work in a hotel in the Grampian area. We've had so many last minute bookings from the central belt since after Nicola made her announcement. Nice to know they don't give a shit and are happy to risk spreading Covid to our area with a lower rate. Angry When Aberdeen got locked down we had a lot of cancellations - seems the Aberdonians were taking things seriously even though they weren't as seriously affected as the central belt is now. Makes me quite angry tbh.

The hotel doesn’t need to take the bookings!

Or getting a train to London and back with a positive Covid diagnosi

God yes what a total arsehole she was and that is before her arrogance.

@randomsabreuse

We're central belt and because of location frequently go into 2 other health boards just to get to the rest of the county because the borders are weird. Only 1 of the 3 main routes (the least used one) actually stays in our health board!

I have swapped to shopping at the bigger Tesco in our health board (but have to drive through another health board to get to) from one on the next health board (which is actually closer)...

Why? What difference does it make?

I live right on the edge, I live in an area which has fewer restrictions but am still going to the shops in the area which has been designated high risk and is 5 miles away. I wear a mask and keep my distance from people.

Totally agree. When they closed the case round our out break there was something like 270ish cases in a city our size. She locked us down at 73 cases for 3 weeks.

Glasgow was allowed to do what they wanted for weeks.
And as for the restrictions over the whole of Scotland... that's a joke. She's nit got the guts to just restrict the central belt.

There's a lot of ppl still pissed over that lockdown.

Wbeezer · 19/10/2020 10:56

Thought it was odd the New York trips, DS3 was adamant but I'm wondering if they were "this time last year" posts, as I can't work out how it would be possible. I should know better than to get caught up in teenage gossip but it's so dull at the moment (well a horrible mix of stressful and dull!) and it's so rare for DS3 to share "news".
Please note I apply greater scrutiny in real life situations than I always do in Mumsnet.

randomsabreuse · 19/10/2020 12:18

@Gingerkittykat

Absolutely no difference. Part of the change was that the shop in health board is bigger but mostly because I was bored of the other shop.

It was more of an illustration of the absurdity of trying to restrict by reference to health board given that on the edges you drive through both Stirling and North Lanarkshire to get back into Greater Glasgow...

Technically we break the rules going for a walk 6 miles from our house, but it would be "fine" to drive 30 miles south...

Distance restriction makes more sense!

DieSchottin93 · 19/10/2020 12:38

@Goingdooolally sadly as an independent, family run hotel we can't afford to turn away bookings, especially now that we've lost out on our evening dining trade Sad

buffyp · 19/10/2020 14:43

Maybe they are selfish arses in your book Bailey but at least they will admit it. It’s people like you who make out your so much morally superior but ultimately don’t give a stuff how many people commit Suicide as a result of lockdowns with no support or people who will now die from cancer as a result of not being able to be seen sooner. My daughter already struggled mentally and it’s being made worse by current restrictions so I may no apology for being more concerned for her and others like her than for a virus with a exceptionally low death rate.
