Who else still has no idea what will happen to their job?

Well not mine but DH. I work in a school so reasonably safe but only part time - it doesn’t even cover our mortgage!

Dh works for a cinema chain and the writing is on the wall for other chains to follow Cineworld and start closing for a while as they are losing more money by being open. And closed until when? Nobody knows. Until some of the big films start being released there would be no point opening again. Will the industry even survive? I truly hope so, I love cinema, not just because it’s dh job but it is also one of my favourite things to do. He’s already on reduced pay and we will have even less money this month as our mortgage holiday comes to an end. If they’re able to reopen in the new year/early spring we may just about be ok unless the chain folds but the uncertainty is frankly soul destroying. Sometimes I almost think it would be easier if he just lost his job now so we knew where we stood, the not knowing feels worse somehow.

Anyone else in a similar position? Still hanging on by a thread but no idea how the next few months will pan out job wise?

I work for a luxury furniture manufacturer. During the lockdown no one was buying, I was on furlough from March until August. Then suddenly we were overwhelmed with orders. We've had a fantastic couple of months sales wise so we will be alright until the new year but another lockdown could be disastrous if the last one was anything to go by. I'm not taking anything for granted.

Youandmeareluckytobeus · 17/10/2020 10:08

I am lucky. I am not in your position at all but I can understand the uncertainty probably being worse than if he was to lose the job now. If I was your DH I would assume I am going to lose my job and start looking for a new one now. It might give him a head start over others.

What does he do at the cinema? Are his skills transferable? Being proactive should help with the sense of helplessness the uncertainty brings.

I don't think everyone is going to be rushing back to cinemas as early as the spring. Some will but I think it will take time to build up again (if indeed it does).

dhisreadingmypostsagain · 17/10/2020 10:16

It's so stressful, I have staff and I've managed to secure a business buy out that's happening in 3 weeks and they know absolutely nothing about it, behind the scenes all of these decisions are being made, plans in place for cuts and I'm managed to secure their jobs for 6 months. But it's brutal times.

Oh the note of your husbands role can you ask him if he senior why aren't cinemas playing all the 80s films? I'd love nothing more than to go and watch the lost boys, terminator etc with my boys, and equally would love to go and see dirty dancing, flash dance on the big screen with some girlfriends.

I'm baffled why cinemas aren't embracing people's desire for nostalgia and the want to go out for a few hours feel safe and just chill.

MereDintofPandiculation · 17/10/2020 10:22

I would have thought a lot of people were in this situation. DIL is in HR, she's had a dreadful summer conducting "difficult interviews", and is wondering how many more people they lose before they no longer need an HR department.

Funkypolar · 17/10/2020 10:37

My civil service department will be making redundancies, mainly admin staff at lower grades. I’m not an admin grade and have been told my job is safe. But then I’ll be going on mat leave.

MarcelineMissouri · 17/10/2020 11:15

@dhisreadingmypostsagain they have been showing quite a few old classics. Dirty dancing has been on, I went to watch The Matrix which was amazing... all the chains have shown quite a few old films. Some were even taking requests! The problem is that it just doesn’t bring in enough people. Classics aren’t enough to get people out of their houses if they aren’t quite sure, you need new films to do that. DH laughs every time people suggest showing old films because it sadly just never works. And it certainly doesn’t work to sustain them for months and months Sad

I feel for you OP. The uncertainty is so awful. Could you look into increasing your hours?

MarcelineMissouri · 17/10/2020 11:30

@Toebarb there are no more hours available at school, I work as a 1-1 so specific funded hours. Dh hours are erratic and can include weekends which also make it hard to look for anything else out of school hours although obviously if things get really tough we may have to figure out a way to do that.

@Youandmeareluckytobeus he does have transferable skills, but has also spent his entire working life in the cinema industry so it will be a hard move to make particularly as there just aren’t jobs around at the moment. He is part of the senior team and wouldn’t want to leave if he can help it.

No one is expecting people to rush back but assuming things are brought under control in the next 6 months or so in whatever way 🙏🏻🤞🏻) there are a lot of big films now due out next year so attendance SHOULD be pretty decent if the films hold and people are more comfortable going out. They don’t expect to return instantly to making a good profit, they’d settle for just breaking even Grin

Me. I’ve no idea what’s going to happen. I’m a chef in hotel/restaurant run by a lovely couple. We’re not a chain just one hotel. We reopened in July and to begin with it was a bit slow people just not sure about going out. It then went incredibly busy in September but this week there’s no trade again, I’ve managed to keep 2 shifts out of 11. Everyone waits for the next announcement and for a few days after those it does pick up but then we start waiting for the next announcement. I love the family business I work for but we won’t survive another long shut down. There’s nobody taking on staff locally that I’m qualified for and the jobs that are listed are things like 10 hr cleaning a week. So for we continue to wait for the next gvnt announcement and go from there. Not sure what else I and my colleagues can do.

tired17 · 17/10/2020 13:00

Me, I still don't know, have been given future dates to go back a few times but they've all been cancelled.

Have a meeting next week which I'm imagining will be a final decision as furlough ends on 31st October. Unfortunately I have no idea what state the business is currently in so I don't know which way it's going to go.

Nomoremojo · 17/10/2020 13:30

If I were you I’d be looking for other TA jobs as 1:1 funding tends to be attached to a particular child so if/when they leave the school you won’t be needed. In practise there’s usually another child who needs the hours but it’s not guaranteed.
Sorry you’re in this situation. You’re certainly not alone. A couple we know are both facing redundancy from previously secure, well paid jobs. It’s awful

tortoiseshell1985 · 17/10/2020 13:32

I've just gone through redundancy consultation thankfully survived for now. Had to apply for own job but was successful huge relief

Illy603 · 17/10/2020 13:35

Already seeing redundancies in my work. It’s really worrying and such uncertain times. I don’t think my job would survive through a second lockdown.

My partner also works for a cinema chain. He’s been off now for 7 months with absolutely no light on whether they’ll re-open this year. I completely understand where you’re coming from, I feel like if he just lost his job now it would, at the very least, let us know exactly where we stood and he could start looking for something else.

roundtable · 17/10/2020 13:36

DH works for the events industry.

No work but not entitled to the new furlough scheme. He's been through redundancy consultancy 4 times now. Every time we think - this is it. The company is doing it's best but there's only much they can do when events are not allowed to be held.

Magnavixen · 17/10/2020 13:38

We’re waiting to hear. DH works for large hotel. Hundreds of staff already made redundant.
Talks of it being kept closed until October 2021.
