NEU calls for two week closure for secondaries and colleges following leap in infections

The NEU has called for a two week closure of secondary schools and colleges following a more than 9-fold increase in the infection rate in secondary school children in a month.

www.tes.com/news/coronavirus-teachers-demand-2-week-school-closures-after-cases-jump

The infection rate in Y7-11 was 0.5% last week, according to the ONS survey of random households, but this nearly doubled to 0.93% in the latest set of figures. This rise cannot be ignored or passed off as relating to university students as has happened so far.

In other, entirely unrelated news, 61% of teachers report that if a student doesn't wear a mask in a school where they are mandated in communal areas 'nothing happens'.

www.tes.com/news/coronavirus-61-staff-say-nothing-done-if-pupils-wont-wear-masks

And Teacher Tapp data from yesterday had 26% of teachers reporting that their schools were partially closed to students.

In the meantime, the testing positivity rate in 10-19 year olds is 17%, which means that this group is severely under-tested and lots of cases will be missed. The rate should be below 5%.

Yet the insistence continues that in any lockdown scenario, schools will remain open. Idiocy.

What new jobs y'all planning to get then?

I hear they're recruiting in cyber.

With my masters in maths and background in programming and data management, I'd probably be ok. Something cushy and well-paid working from home, I expect; I know people.

People who think that I hate teaching and hate kids should perhaps wonder why I'm not doing that already.

In all seriousness why don't you consider changing jobs if you are bothered by the risk you're at?

"It's like you genuinely believe teaching is the only challenging job."

Oh, and here we go again! How on EARTH do you deduce that from my post? You made an unpleasant jibe about teachers' time off (when school holidays are way beyond out control). I attempted to explain that it's not as straightforward as that, and you twist my words into that hackneyed old cliche that we're all very bored with.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 17/10/2020 11:16

Noble l know😞I’m fighting by your side🙂

But parents don’t know:

The government say nothing
There is no national announcement on school cases
My db who has grown up children thought schools were being socially distanced. He didn’t have a clue🤦🏽‍♀️

No I just said my job was hard too. And then I get all the oh but you don't do all thisssssss. When actually I do. And I get paid less than you.
noblegiraffe · 17/10/2020 11:17

Because I like teaching and I like the kids? I'd prefer that schools were made safer rather than education losing yet another qualified maths teacher.

You and every other parent with a child studying maths at secondary school had better hope that noble and her ilk DON'T do that!

As if our schools aren't fucked enough already!

Fair enough! So presumably you don't agree with your fellow teacher that schools aren't essential?

But parents don’t know:

Hopefully a few more Mumsnetters know.

Despite the best efforts of others to shut down the conversation because of their own selfish, misguided interests. They really are the worst.

And you'll note that I didn't leap on you by accusing you of making out your job is harder than anyone else's.

No because I didn't do that, but you did.

"For a teacher your comprehension is shite."

As is yours, for not understanding the turn of phrase "you'd better hope."

I understand it but your comment was as if I hoped she would leave, I don't hope anything.. I just asked her a question. I forgot, that's not allowed on this thread is it.
noblegiraffe · 17/10/2020 11:22

So presumably you don't agree with your fellow teacher that schools aren't essential?

Given the society that we live in with the need for formal qualifications to progress, I do believe that it is essential to try to get kids through those qualifications and open doors for them.

I have lots of concerns about the state of education and the suitability of those qualifications (as anyone who has read my threads over the years will know) but that's a different discussion.

Yes and you still made a personal attack.
monkeytennis97 · 17/10/2020 11:23

@noblegiraffe totally agree with your post re necessity of schools.

monkeytennis97 · 17/10/2020 11:25

@TrustTheGeneGenie do you not think yours was personal?

Wow...... just wow!Wink

notevenat20 · 17/10/2020 11:28

This from SAGE is interesting.Essentially, without continuous mass testing having all schools open really increases the R number.

It's from SPIMO which is a different group but the main point is that it was updated on September 11 so has no evidence from the opening of schools.

What that I don't give a shit what job you do if you leave teaching? No. It's not name calling or bullying just a lack of interest in your future career.

notevenat20 · 17/10/2020 11:30

Oh look another personal attack. Funny because the people doing the most attacking on this thread are teachers

There is a small group of very angry teachers here who love to go for the woman and not the ball.

And yet you said it. Hmm
