Anyone had a child test positive with cold symptoms?

DD (Nearly 3) has second cold of the term. She always coughs when she gets a cold as she gets so bunged up and congested, also had only gotten over last cold recently.

No constant cough no temperature.

I ask because I’ve heard of families getting tested and they tested positive and the younger children just had colds.

I appreciate we don’t all need to test the little ones with a cold as it would overwhelm the system.

Concerned for grandparents doing childcare.

what would you do?

I’m so over 2020!

My dd has had colds, but not covid symptoms so why would i get her tested?

My DS (nearly 3) currently has a cold with a cough and a temperature, I have had him tested this morning as he has been in close contact with a positive case at nursery and is self isolating. I'm sure he does just have a cold however better to be safe than sorry. But no, I wouldn't test a child with no obvious symptoms as it was an utterly horrific experience for both of us.

I know of a few children and adults who have tested positive with colds. Lots have started with sore throats.

It’s very difficult. Cold symptoms can obviously be similar to covid symptoms. Just had my son tested this morning. Has had what seems like a cold this week but had a temperature last night so arranged test for today. It made him gag a bit but totally fine otherwise.

Definitely test the symptoms PHE give are wrong. Symptoms in kids v varied and rarely include temp, cough.

Tim Spector was saying today don’t feel guilty for getting tested (Covid19 App). It provides more data for them even negative results.

Both children in my class that are positive just had cold symptoms andbone a tummy ache. The first was only tested because her older brother had classic symptoms. The others were only tested because she was positive.

Bmj:

A few do have runny nose but it decreases with age.

https://www.bmj.com/content/370/bmj.m3249

Interestingly as I searched for that, a lot of daily mail and telegraph news articles popped up with "expert says runny nose is NOT a symptom," (mostly early September when phe were asking schools to tell parents to only test for the 3 main symptoms) the expert being Tim Spectre... Confused

It's a really tricky one.

Are you in a high area?

if it were my own situation with grandparents doing child care I would probably test her as she's young and the BMJ noted it was the younger ones that occasionally had runny nose.

Bare in mind that she may have another 6 colds this year and therefore you may be in this situation again. The testing isn't great. But grandparents...
