The tiers are upside down

This is obviously entirely unimportant and only an idle musing.

It's counter-intuitive to me that 3 is riskier than 1. 1 is the top of the tree, the winner in any placing which to me makes it seem the most important and therefore Tier 1 ought to be the what the top tier is, the one with the strictest measures.

Tier 3 ought to be the least important, the bronze level, so should be the one with the least restrictions.

Anyone else think that?

But one is where you start. At the beginning. And as Covid gets worse you move up. Like you start school in year one and move up.

I’ve got more of an issue with a ‘3 tier system’ labelled medium, high, very high than the way the numbers work.

I don’t think that’s how scales are supposed to work and if low exists then it’s a 4 tier system. More if you add extremely high and oh fuck tiers at the top.

Fair point. I used to get irrationally angry ordering soup at Eat. They have 3 sizes; small, large and extra large. I always ordered the medium and when they said they didn't have one would explain if they have 3 sizes then the middle one is medium. Clearly.

It’s backwards not having a “low”, there’s no need for anyone to be on low, just a thought that such a thing might ever exist would be good.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 16/10/2020 08:50

Agree with you but it is like the GCSE numbers. They don't want to end up with Tier A**

theDudesmummy · 16/10/2020 08:59

Here is Ireland we have Levels 1 to 5, I imagine so they could add a 6 etc if things get worse....

It's not exactly that clear though, our county is basically on 2+ (2 but with extra restrictions)

theDudesmummy · 16/10/2020 09:00

Sorry actually we are on 3+ not 2+!

alwayscrashinginthesamecar1 · 16/10/2020 09:07

Where I live (Western Australia) the tiers are the other way round. We are currently on level 4, the next tier is level 5 when remaining restrictions are lifted except the border stays shut, which will hopefully be next week. To me your level 3 is like our level 1, it makes no sense. But I can see the logic in leaving it open to more levels, as having shops and pubs open still leaves leeway to lockdown more, horrible as that would be.

AuntieStella · 16/10/2020 10:25

I like the idea of calling the real, yet-to-be-revealed highest tier the 'oh fuck level' !!

BestZebbie · 16/10/2020 10:46

I feel the same about the gears in cars...

homemadecommunistrussia · 16/10/2020 10:51

Public enemy number one is not someone with a parking ticket! The system is obviously backwards.

user1495884620 · 16/10/2020 10:52

@AuntieStella

I feel the same about GCSE grades. 1 should be the best/highest grade, not the lowest

I was for O levels, before they changed to A-E in the 70s. CSEs were also numeric with 1 as the highest. I suspect they put them the other way up this time round to minimise confusion - though there can't be that many over 50s still relying on CSE grades, or over 60s on numerically graded O levels on their CVs this century!

Completely missing the point of the thread, but a lot of jobs require GCSE maths and english as standard so there are probably a few over 50s (actually I think some 49 year olds as well) job hunters with grade 1 CSE as an equivalent.

We'll know we're in the shit when the tiers go up to 11.

loobyloo1234 · 16/10/2020 10:56

Agree with those saying its the right way round - although I think 1 shouldve been 'Low Risk' - as it gives them the scope to go up to Tier 4/5 to make the measures more extreme

Coffee sizing is worse. I just ask for a small, they know what is meant even if it is called a medium or something else.

Yeah, I mean 9 was enough to accommodate the circles of hell.

You and I would get on well in a coffee shop.

What would they call it if they added a tier to medium, high and very high? Fucking high I guess? Or just fucked.

Brighterthansunflowers · 16/10/2020 18:09

I expect by the time we actually have need of a low tier we’ll have been through several more versions of “let’s pretend we’re in control by naming categories”

Had to share

SazCat · 16/10/2020 18:27

This makes me think of Joey in Friends... Why is 10 the highest?
Ross: Because it's the highest! 😂
