Are the government sticking their fingers in their ears again like in March?

What do people think? Things are clearly going the wrong way again.

I thought Mondays announcement was going to be something big, but it just feels like another local lockdown under another name.

Personally I really, really do not want another big lockdown like we had in March, I think it would be completely catastrophic for children and livelihoods. Very easy if you've got secure finances and a nice home to want another lockdown. Don't know what the answer is, we are just competing with everything and hoping.

Do people think a short two week lockdown would achieve much?

I'm not sure people would even comply. I don't think people would comply unless they get very scared, and to be honest I think some people just wouldn't feel scared anyway this time round. Especially if they're not vulnerable themselves or are sick of having their lives turned upside down.

2 weeks won't achieve anything plus.. many won't even comply now

Because 2 weeks was supposed to be in September.

Every month it is delayed double the time as a minimum.

The government needs to get test, track and trace working asap which was the point of the lockdown in March. Unfortunately the government was too thick and corrupt to sort this out.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 15/10/2020 17:43

Yes

Either we're sleep walking into overwhelming the NHS or a full national lockdown again.

Either way the government are doing the equivalent of sticking the going "lalala im not listening

picklecustard · 15/10/2020 17:45

I would have thought people would comply if it was a ‘short sharp’ 2 week lockdown with a definite end date, probably a lot more than if we end up in a long lockdown with no end in sight

Unsure33 · 15/10/2020 17:47

Not listening to who ?!

The scientists disagree ... that is obvious
The world health organisation are now not advocating full lockdown
The public are split right down the middle .

Half want to just live with it and half want lockdown.

So who exactly are they ignoring ?

Unsure33 · 15/10/2020 17:48

Sorry that should say the scientists disagree with each other .

tinytemper66 · 15/10/2020 17:52

They have never removed them!

knittingaddict · 15/10/2020 17:52

It certainly feels like that. I understand that they want to keep the economy going, but I'm not sure if that's at all realistic now.

I'm hoping that in the next election there will be a viable alternative to run the country. I hate wasting my vote, but I can't vote Tory again. I'm also annoyed that the Labour party insisted on keeping Jeremy Corbyn as their leader. Not convinced that Labour would have done a better job, but surely they couldn't have been worse. Who knows.

TheFormattingIsWrong · 15/10/2020 17:53

People would be more likely to comply with a strict 2 week one with a clear end point than the half arsed open ended ones we currently have.

TheFormattingIsWrong · 15/10/2020 17:54

Why can't you vote for Starmer?

ChaChaCha2012 · 15/10/2020 17:55

I think it's a combination of them being too stupid to know what to do, they don't really care anymore, and they want to play this out for long enough to distract from Brexit. Mostly the latter. Once Brexit is 'done' the senior cabinet will resign and be made Lords, and sit in their cushy chamber for the rest of their lives.

Last time I checked Starmer wasn't a choice in the last election, Corbyn was. Starmer may be better, but I don't think he's been around long enough to tell. I hope so.
knittingaddict · 15/10/2020 18:01

I don't think the Conservatives do care, or least the ones Boris Johnson has surrounded himself with, don't.

The older I get the more I move to the left politically. It's an interesting transition and Covid has clinched it for me.

MiddleClassMother · 15/10/2020 18:06

I doubt a two week lockdown would work tbh. Other counties that didn't lock down came out a lot better than we did. Even so people aren't listening to the restrictions so cases are rising left, right and centre.

LangClegsInSpace · 15/10/2020 18:09

The world health organisation are now not advocating full lockdown

WHO have never advocated lockdown as anything other than a last resort. They have consistently said we should be testing, contact tracing and isolating and that lockdown is just to buy a bit of time if you have lost control of the virus so you can put those measures in place.

It's been fascinating watching first the lockdown fans, and now the herd immunity fans, spinning WHO's very consistent message in completely different directions and claiming they've done a massive U turn.

Unsure33 · 15/10/2020 20:14

Well I remember a press conference where they said the uk did not lockdown quick enough ?

Tfoot75 · 15/10/2020 20:21

I don't think 2 weeks would achieve anything really as by the end of it the infections wouldn't have even started to decrease. One of my family has a special birthday after half term - cases aren't particularly high in our area so why should this person sit on their own isolated and not see their family? Beyond depressing and wouldn't actually achieve anything, particularly when we all think we've already had covid, couldn't have a test, haven't been offered an antibody test. It's just a shit show isn't it.

The problem is regional, but the regions won't accept or comply with the restrictions until everyone else is made to as well. Its like naughty siblings isn't it, everyone has to be punished before the one will do what it's told!
