Everyone should get back to normal and just protect the elderly?

What's people's opinions on this?
Everyone get back to normal and if your elderly or vulnerable then shield or take precautions.
We just can't go on like this.
Should everything return to normal?

Dr. Anthony Fauci: call for "herd immunity" is "nonsense."

How are you defining old?

What measures do you actually mean to provide protection?

PuzzledObserver · 15/10/2020 19:04

@terreyyy

I can't see a vaccine even next year.

Why is that? Those who are actually working on vaccines are optimistic. We have dibs on 6 different vaccines - some will fail, but it is very unlikely that they all will.

@OhReallyThen

Their lives don't matter more than the older generation. They can suck it up like the rest of us.

I'm not saying they do. But realistically if it's a choice between total lockdown or lockdown the older generation why should the younger generation suffer a lockdown when they're realistically very safe? Let it get through younger people so they build some immunity, can also keep the economy going a little and have their life back, and then slowly open back up to older people as cases start to drop.

There's no evidence of lasting immunity though. How many times would you like a person to catch this thing?

So no, I disagree. Why should anyone suffer because the young can't give up some of their life for the sake of others. It's selfish and this thing isn't going to last forever.

RedMarauder · 15/10/2020 19:28

The problem with your argument OP is that some healthy and young people didn't realise they had an underlying condition until they caught Covid-19, and others are now suffering from "Long Covid". Those suffering Long Covid are going to cost the NHS and society a lot for years to come.

cologne4711 · 15/10/2020 19:33

To avoid overwhelming the NHS you need to protect anyone over age 45

Erm, I am 48 and I can protect myself just fine thanks, I don't need shutting away.

MereDintofPandiculation · 15/10/2020 19:47

The average age of covid death is 82. So the same as the average age of death without Covid, then?

notevenat20 · 15/10/2020 19:52

The problem is covid is really risky if you are over 65. That is a lot of people who live full and normal lives like you and I do. For them not to interact with anyone under 65 ever is essentially impossible.

MagpieSong · 15/10/2020 20:06

There are a number of foster carers and kinship carers in the older generation, it would be impossible to ‘shut them away’ as they live with and are main carers for young children. There are plenty of reasons why it doesn’t work.

dollychopss · 15/10/2020 20:17

@midgebabe

There are lots of ways of sorting this out

Press your mp for a working test system that returns results in 24 hrs, reaches 80% of contacts within the next 24 hrs, and achieve near 100% self isolation compliance by paying people, monitoring people and having someone call every day to check they are ok

Or wait for vaccine /treatment which is highly likely in the next 6 months

I know it's hard when you see the mess the country is in, unemployment, full ICU's, deaths all rising. But the greater the unity of voices calling for the basics, the better

Exactly it is the government I hate Matt Hancock truly nothing in place
Namenic · 15/10/2020 20:21

Well I guess you could go back to normal, but the young people would start finding that they can’t get to see gp due to people isolating, heavy workload due to sick patients. Hospitals start getting filled up.

Wuhan, north Italy, New York.
Or govt could accept that drastic action has to be taken and do what it takes - like how they built the nightingales. It was pretty remarkable what they did. Why not do that for testing?

My elderly care ward is now closed with 75% patients now having covid - they all came in with something else and caught it from asymptomatic staff. This is what happens when transmission is high - it bleeds through no matter how hard you try.

Now,

  • there's not enough staff to care for the patients as staff are self isolating. If there is more transmission, staff will be taken from other wards which will have to stop admitting.
  • there are now no dedicated care of the elderly beds as the ward is closed - all patients will have worse outcomes and need greater social care input.
  • All admissions are being diverted to other beds so there is less surgery, ortho, medical, stroke beds for everyone - all local residents are suffering because admissions are being restricted - that's your husband, child, mother etc who can't have care.
  • those patients who now can't be admitted might be police officers who can't enforce the law, GPs who can't prevent further admissions, teachers who now have to close the school etc.

There is NO WAY to shield certain people from covid so it doesn't affect the rest of society.

covidmonkey · 15/10/2020 21:00

I think elderly should be very careful and not go to Wetherspoons by bus in Liverpool atm. The attitude that I will live 100% and covid might get me but I might die tomorrow anyway. These people might have twenty odd years left if they are lucky. This is different to those with terminal illnesses who will die in due course. They can see their friends and relatives.
