Are they trying to 'flatten the curve' again?

Back in March the reason we were given for going into lockdown was to reduce the strain on the NHS, and to flatten the curve in terms of cases. Not to completely eradicate all cases. So has the situation worsened to the point that we need to flatten the curve again? It seems to me that we need to accept there will be a certain number of cases and learn to live with that, rather than freaking out about a relatively small number of people in the ICU.

The ‘thought’ is that we need local lockdowns to alleviate pressure on the NHS with a hospital in Liverpool said to have 90% of beds in ICU currently taken by covid positive patients.
A greater number of covid positive patients are filling ICU beds in many areas (mainly university cities at the moment & some other areas in the North). The situation has worsened in that more people are being admitted to hospital. The number of positive cases daily will obviously be more than 7 months ago as more people are being tested now.
