Shopping delivery for Covid positive household

DD is first year at uni in house with 4 other girls (private rental not halls). They are isolating as have all tested positive. They have arranged an asda grocery delivery tomorrow and have put in the notes section that the household is covid positive as they are worried for the delivery person. Does anyone know how the delivery will take place ie will the driver ring the bell and then step back 2 meters.....should DD maybe not open the door, but instead talk through a window to them? They are feeling bad to out a delivery person in this position, but really need the supplies. Is there any more they should do ie phone asda in advance?

I would just have your daughter speak to the driver through the door and then bring in the delivery once he/she has walked away.

I'm sure there was a button on the website to select if you were isolating. Driver should bring crates to door, knock and then step back.

When my son had Covid we used Ocado and when i heard the van pull up i opened door before he came up path and just told him to leave on doorstep.

I think most major supermarkets have procedures in place for isolating households so tell her not to worry. She still needs to eat so getting an online delivery is the responsible thing to do! As long as she's noted it in the delivery the delivery person will leave the delivery at the door and step back.

It won't be the first time the delivery driver has experienced an isolating household. They've put it in the notes which is all they can do. When we were isolating we got an asda delivery and they just left it at the door and we opened it once they had gone

Thanks all, that's really useful.

Ideally she shouldn't open the door until after the driver has left. I'd go to the closest window and tap to get the drivers attention and then indicate that I'd like the shopping left on the doorstep. Wait for them to leave it there and go, then open the door and bring it in. (I did this for my veg box when I was waiting for a test result and it worked fine)

We always get groceries delivered as we don’t have a car.

Since Covid the driver rings the bell, and puts the crates of shopping down, then we pull the bags into the hall, or carry the crates into the kitchen and unpack there if the shopping isn’t bagged. The drivers wear gloves and masks.

We’re not isolating so this must be standard for Sainsbury’s - and I assume for other supermarkets. Previously the driver would have taken the crates into the kitchen.

One of my students is a delivery driver for Asda and he said they are not allowed to bring crates upstairs to properties in blocks of flats at the moment, and people need to go downstairs to the front door. Not sure how that would work if isolating.

We just received a delivery and we are positive. We opened the door and reminded the chap as he got out of the van. He'd forgotten, but then at the van he loaded the shop into bin bags which they (Tesco) have for this purpose. He put the bin bags on the doorstep. We took them in when he had gone. They won't let you touch the crates if you are infected it seems.

ChristmasCantComeSoonEnough · 14/10/2020 21:55

I’m not isolating but I was told not to touch the crates at my last delivery so might just be a precaution for all deliveries.

Hardbackwriter · 14/10/2020 22:11

I'd put a note on the door asking the driver just to put it on the doorstep, knock and leave, since they know what time they're expecting the delivery, as then that means they don't have to talk even from a window or from 2m back? The driver might do that anyway but it seems like a sensible precaution.

Frappuccinofan · 14/10/2020 22:19

At the beginning of lockdown didn’t supermarkets leave deliveries outside (contact free?). I don’t see why they couldn’t do that this time, provided there are no age restricted items. However I didn’t actually order any groceries so can’t confirm!

Frappuccinofan · 14/10/2020 22:22

Also didn’t the government send food supplies to extremely vulnerable households? Check if they offer the same support to COVID+ households. Or some charities in her area might not mind going shopping for them. Or order a Morrison‘s food box?

EmMac7 · 14/10/2020 22:23

We’ve been telling Ocado to leave the groceries at the bottom of the steps since March. Doesn’t do any harm and is safer for the driver and us. Don’t give a shit if they think we’re weird. 😂

HowFastIsTooFast · 14/10/2020 22:26

I've had a couple of contactless deliveries (at the delivery company's behest, I've never been isolating) and they've just put the pizza / parcel / veg box down, knocked and then retreated to a safe distance and waited. The veg box guy got back in his van and just watched me come to the door from there. They'll be fine Smile
