How to help ease symptoms

ScottishMummy12 · 14/10/2020 18:48

My mum has covid symptoms and we are waiting on the results of her test we are expecting it to be positive though as she has been identified as a close contact of 3 people in her office who have tested positive.
She has copd but has been advised to stay at home. Is there anything I can do to help ease the symptoms? She is very breathless and has the cough and temperature. So far we have tried paracetamol (which does reduce her temp), air humidifier and her inhalers.

I remember reading that there is a video on youtube about helping your breathing that some people find helps.

I hope it helps and she feels better soon.

Let us know how she gets on OP. My ds has asthma & I freaked out about all this in early March & purchased a nebuliser. Thankfully haven't needed to use it yet but think it might help.

Lots of breathing exercises online, will try to find some...

I have a child with asthma and when they struggle I count breaths per minute, for them over 45 is a problem and we got to hospital. I also use a pulse oximeter, less than 94 is A&E trip. If she is breathless I would call 111 again, use the inhaler at the max allowed in the meantime. My child has emergency steroids also at home. A Dr may be able to prescribe something over the phone - is she on other meds? I do hope she improves soon.

Nothing to add op but here’s a handhold from me Flowers

Also google diy spacer for the inhaler if she doesn't have a spacer. Apparently it makes it a lot more effective & you can use an old plastic bottle.

Hope she makes a quick recovery. Flowers

Thanks everyone!
The doctor prescribed her steroid tablets over the phone this afternoon and the chemist will be delivering them in the morning.
Her oxygen level is sitting at 95 just now so will be keeping a close eye on it through the night.
Her respiratory consultant is keen for to be home at long as possible unless symptoms become unmanageable.

my mum is in exactly the same situation as yours, its just so stressful isn’t it, i cant concentrate on anything at all. I am telling myself that she will at least be immune for the winter after this and also the nhs isn’t overwhelmed yet, if she does need any treatment. Good luck x
Dumpypumpy · 14/10/2020 22:36

Oh and did your consultant say what the triggers are for further intervention ? My mums o2 is 96% tonight

EmMac7 · 14/10/2020 22:42

Vitamin C & D, magnesium, zinc and melatonin may be helpful to keep her immune system strong early on. (Even Trump had these).

ScottishMummy12 · 14/10/2020 22:48

@Dumpypumpy Hope your mum is okay and makes a quick recovery. I know that's what I'm telling myself as well.
He said to phone 111 if it dropped below 95 and any lower than 90 to phone for an ambulance.

Hope your mum is ok . Why was her employer not providing a covid safe environment ?

Hope PHE are going in to check.

ScottishMummy12 · 15/10/2020 00:14

@Unsure33 I don't know it was supposed to be. She works in a school office and they did a risk assessment and supposedly it was deemed safe. The desks are all 2 metres apart and the windows and door are kept open at all times. My mum doesn't work enough hours to get a break so she was never in the staff room or shared areas so she has definitely caught it in the office. It quite clearly wasn't safe since all but one of the staff that work in the office have covid or are waiting on tests results.
I know the local authority have had the office deep cleaned and are looking at the size of the office again to make sure that the staff can distance while working.
