Why were there only 61 people with CV in hospital in Nottingham yesterday?

It's supposed to be the Covid centre with the most cases per 100000 in the UK. I assumed hospitals would be inundated with cases so was shocked when this figure popped up on the news last night. That's the whole hospital not ITU.

@RubyandBen - what makes you think it’s the covid centre when it’s Liverpool that is subject to the highest level of restrictions?! Nottingham’s main issue is thought to be its universities at the moment, so currently mainly young people, not that part of the population most likely to end up in hospital.

mumsneedwine · 14/10/2020 17:27

Students. The Uni is testing asymptotic people so picking up loads of positives with no symptoms.

RubyandBen · 14/10/2020 17:31

We're being led to believe that it's out of control and hospitals are nearly at capacity. The nightingale hospitals are on standby. It's all a load of designed to install the fear into us again.

The increase in Nottingham is very recent and still concentrated in the student population, it will be a different picture 2 or 3 weeks after it has spread out of the student population.

mumsneedwine · 14/10/2020 17:35

Some places are though. Liverpool's hospitals are at 90% capacity and ICUs almost full. So far Nottingham seems to have stayed on campus (benefits of a campus Uni), but Trent cases rising and they live more in the town. Keep fingers crossed.

FourTeaFallOut · 14/10/2020 17:46

Well, let's hope you're right, op. Looking forward to you coming back to this post in three weeks time to say I told you so.

RubyandBen · 14/10/2020 17:49

@FourTeaFallOut I bet you are.

Apperently Liverpools intensive care facilities usually are about 75% full at this time of year.
They are not nightingale wards waiting for covid patients so while there is obviously an increase in patient numbers it's not quite as bad as the media states.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 14/10/2020 18:52

The increase in Nottingham is majority students as the universities are doing mass testing, much less likely to require hospital treatment.

I live in Nottingham and we are lucky in a way as we have a very large hospital so I'm hoping it won't reach capacity.

Ecosse · 14/10/2020 19:00

The media coverage regarding the situation in Liverpool has been designed to scaremonger. It is true that an initial 8 ICU beds set aside for COVID patients are full but there are plenty of other beds available in the hospital.

Keep1984fiction · 14/10/2020 19:03

Royal Liverpool hospital has 18 intensive care beds and 14 high dependancy beds.
If these are 90% occupied then around 16/17 people on IC and 13 people in HD.
If they are on the usual occupancy of around 75% then it's around14 or 15 in IC and 11 or 12 in HD.
Statistics can prove anything

Well that doesn't mean it isn't a problem. The fact that the NHS runs with ICU facilities full/nearly full every winter means we just don't have the capacity for hundreds of sick covid patients too.
GinnieHempstock · 14/10/2020 19:05

They are not the numbers that have been sent by the trust. I suspect the news is out of date. They sound like the numbers at the weekend.

RubyandBen · 14/10/2020 19:21

@GinnieHempstock what are the numbers then? How many in ICU and HCU in Liverpool with CV? Just been on the news it's at 90% capacity.

OP Even for a city the size of Nottingham, 61 is still a lot of people and its rising rapidly.

Walkaround...what makes you think it’s the covid centre when it’s Liverpool that is subject to the highest level of restrictions

Liverpool (683 per 100,000) isn't the highest for rates of infection. Its third or fourth I think?

Nottingham's rate is 972 per 100,000

DelilahDingleberry · 14/10/2020 20:34

Nottingham is tier 2. Lots of positive tests but significantly among the university student population and therefore not as likely to need hospitalisation. Positive cases is only one indicator.

chutneypig · 14/10/2020 20:41

The cases are rising now beyond the student areas in Nottingham and out into the county. As PP have said, 2-3 weeks will give us a very different picture unfortunately. The opportunity to damp that down is long gone.

Chloemol · 14/10/2020 20:48

Because it takes a while for the virus to start, then get so bad that hospital treatment is needed, so whilst cases are going up, there’s a time lag for getting it and then the requirement for hospital

Msmcc1212 · 14/10/2020 20:58

It's all a load of designed to install the fear into us again.

I think that is a bit paranoid. Like PP said. It’s about the numbers that are coming and exponential growth. Each ICU bed requires a number of staff. It’s very intensive treatment and the more ICU beds needed the more staff need to be deployed and impact then in other services. I have lots of friends who are doctors and they have friends who are doctors in Italy - trust me - we NEED to take this seriously and FOLLOW THE GUIDELINES. It’s shit. And lockdown is shit but if we do whatever we can we will minimise the chance of some horrendous situations.
