Track and trace how does it work?

OpheliasCrayon · 14/10/2020 11:37

How long after you'd been with someone, say in a restaurant or something , would track and trace reasonably get in touch with you?

As in, do people have to go for the meal, then get symptoms, then order a test, then wait for the results, then be contacted by track and trace - ie many days would have passed since id been in the vicinity and it's not like I'd go today and I'd be contacted tomorrow ?

And does the isolation period start on the day you went to that restaurant (ie some of the time would have already passed by the time they contacted you) or the day they contact you?

Trying to weigh up what risks I'm prepared to take regarding socialising and needing to be able to still go to work (can't work at home) because if I don't work I don't get paid.

It doesn't work

StarCat2020 · 14/10/2020 12:10

Sorry.

As soon as you get symptoms you isolate.

Get a test and wait for results.

T&T would only contact you if you are + about your contacts not about you.

I don't understand !

I'm saying if I go out for a meal, but never get any symptoms, but a person in the restaurant at the same time got symptoms - I would be contacted to isolate.

Bht how soon would that happen if I were to go out tonight? As surely they would need to notice they had symptoms and get a test and get the results, so several days from me going out for this meal would have already elapsed ?

Yes, you won't be contacted until the person who has it has developed symptoms, then been tested, then you're traced. Happened to me recently and it was 7 days since I had contact with them when they traced me, so only 7 days of isolation were needed.

QueenBlueberries · 14/10/2020 12:19

You are right to question this. I am not 100% sure but I think if someone goes out to a restaurant (day 0) has symptoms the following morning (day 1), they isolate, get a test (lets assume they can get a test on day 2) wait for results which should arrive, best case scenario, on day 3, more likely day 4. details will get passed on to Track and trace day 4 or 5.

Then what? Do they contact people that the patient has been in couch on day 0? or the day before? or two days before? Then do they ask people to isolate from day 4+14 days, or from from day 0 + 14 days?

AndThatsNotRight · 14/10/2020 12:20

Theoretically if you go out tonight, someone you have contact with could start feeling ill tomorrow, could get tested tomorrow, and could get the results within 24 hours. So the absolute earliest that you would be contacted would be 48 hours. As I said in my case it was actually seven days.

AndThatsNotRight · 14/10/2020 12:21

And it's people that they've been in contact with in the two days before they got symptoms.

twinmum2017 · 14/10/2020 12:21

As I understand it everyone who had been in contact within 48 hours of the persons symptoms starting would be contacted. So for example you go for dinner on Saturday, someone at the next table get symptoms Sunday, tests Monday, results Tuesday (wishful thinking!) you would get contacted to isolate for 14 days starting from the Saturday you were out.

Same scenario but the person at the next table gets symptoms on Tuesday you would not be contacted as you saw them more than 48 hours before their symptoms started.

Obviously the time it takes to contact you would depend on how quickly they could get a test and how long the results take

OpheliasCrayon · 14/10/2020 12:22

Right yes as I thought - this isn't going to be an immediate - I go out tonight and get contacted tomorrow for example

I can't work at home and can't ideally miss work, but if it takes that amount of time it would be half term by the time they got to me anyway so for the remaining week we would be at home anyhow.

I want to see my friends as I fear more restrictions will come in and then I can't but I don't want to impact my job.

Well no it doesn't seem to ...but on the off chance it does I don't want to end up screwed out of work and money

I saw someone on a Friday, they developed symptoms on Saturday night, got a test on Sunday and tested positive on Monday. I was contacted on the Tuesday and had to self isolate for 14 days from the Friday that I saw them. Fortunately I had only seen people from my household on the saturday and the person had messaged me that they had symptoms on the Saturday night anyway.

anniegun · 14/10/2020 12:25

You will be contacted if you have been in close contact with someone for a defined period. So in a restaurant with social distancing you will not be deemed to have come in contact with another table

ItsBeyondMe · 14/10/2020 12:27

Looking at another thread some people’s results are taking considerably longer than 24/48 hours. In theory a timeline could look like this

Day 0 go out to pub/restaurant
Day 2 evening develop symptoms.
Day 3 test...or can’t get a test until day 7 (still within first five days of symptoms.
Day 4 result...or day 5...or day 6 (or occurring to a day 7 test, day 8,9 or 10)
Track and trace follow up contacts usually around 48hrs
So “best” case scenario day 6 and 14 days isolation from the day you had contact.

In reality, could be any length of time and you might have to only isolate for a day or two!

ItsBeyondMe · 14/10/2020 12:28

But you wouldn’t be asked to isolate from diners/drinkers at another table as that isn’t deemed close contact, the risk would be from the person you went out with.

OpheliasCrayon · 14/10/2020 12:34

Oh is this definite? If someone in the restaurant not at my table had it then that's not of any relevance to me?

Because I am a twat and didn't read your post properly.

I am sorry I did that.

Hope you got the information from the subsequent (useful) posters.

Ha not a twat. I'm usually a rambling idiot and somewhat sleep deprived so nothing I say makes sense anyhow !

OpheliasCrayon · 14/10/2020 13:17

@StarCat2020

Pretty much. But I also called the restaurant to clarify the above points anyway so I'm going to make the most of a dinner with friends before it's inevitably stopped anyhow . Thank you!

dazzlinghaze · 14/10/2020 13:31

I don't think it does work particularly well tbh. My uncle tested positive after doing some work in my house and put me down to be contacted so I had proof for work but I never heard a thing from them.

helpfulperson · 14/10/2020 13:37

Generally they wont contact you just because another dinner is positive. Where they may contact you is if a couple of people who were in the restaurant test positive and it becomes a cluster. This happened following an event at a pub near us.

OpheliasCrayon · 14/10/2020 14:18

So the upshot of this thread is clearly that track and trace is pointless
