Quick question

Why are schools set to close for 2 weeks in NI but not in england and wales?

Rosehip10 · 14/10/2020 10:11

Some council areas in NI have the highest rate per 100,000 in Europe (over 900)

WeAreFromThePlanetDuplo · 14/10/2020 10:14

Wow Rosehip, is that true? Where? Can you give a link?

Flagsfiend · 14/10/2020 10:17

It's an experiment, allows us to compare different interventions. NI shut everything (including schools), Scotland central belt (shut hospitality but keep schools open), Liverpool (just ban household mixing and close alcohol related hospitality). Okay so I don't actually think it is being run as an experiment, but it does seem a bit like one...

Nickysofttouch · 14/10/2020 10:19

Hmm all very odd.

nicky2512 · 14/10/2020 10:25

We are having around 1000 confirmed cases per day here (v high relative to population). ICU beds are running v low.

lurker101 · 14/10/2020 10:31

I would say it’s also potentially much less disruptive to the economy to close schools in NI due to the informal nature of childcare for a lot of families. For example at my school very few children had formal childcare it was mainly parents/grandparents that provided childcare

WeAreFromThePlanetDuplo · 14/10/2020 10:32

Thanks @Rosehip10, that's v interesting.

Castiel07 · 14/10/2020 10:36

Its half term in Ireland isn't it? So will it only be an extra week at most for schools to be shut.
Most schools in England are shut for 1 and a half weeks/2 weeks from this week.
If England are going to do it then this is the best time!

Luckystar1 · 14/10/2020 10:41

I’m beside myself about this tbh. My eldest has already been off for the last 2 weeks, he has had one month of school since March.

I can’t keep homeschooling, it’s just not an adequate alternative.

And I think we all know this is just the beginning. It’ll be under review and extended.

I’ve been crying all morning. (I have another child and a newborn to cater to too)

nancypineapple · 14/10/2020 10:43

Just watching this now live. No doubt Boris will announce something similar with 2 hours notice in a week or so...

WeAreFromThePlanetDuplo · 14/10/2020 10:44

It's not half term in Northern Ireland, no. Don't know about Ireland. Half term starts in our part of NI on 24 Oct.

I'm really fed up too, @Luckystar1. DD is in P7.

nancypineapple · 14/10/2020 10:45

Would be useful to know numbers of intensive care beds in each reason. Liverpool are nearly full-does anyone have a link they could post for these please?

LoeliaPonsonby · 14/10/2020 10:46

Exile here - how is this affecting the 11+?

gallbladderpain · 14/10/2020 10:47

Because Northern Ireland currently have 12 ICU beds left in the entire country and have had to scale up to the surge plans in some hospitals due to bed issues

IndieRo · 14/10/2020 10:48

Not half term in Republic of Ireland either. Mid term is 26th October for 1 week.

Nickysofttouch · 14/10/2020 10:58

@Luckystar1

Why has your child been off school the past 2 weeks?

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 14/10/2020 11:03

Most schools are shut in Scotland just now for the October holidays and some have 1 week some have 2 weeks. So although schools are remaining open while hospitality closes, in reality schools are closed for part of the shutdown too

Luckystar1 · 14/10/2020 11:05

@Nickysofttouch his teacher got CV so they were self isolating.

No one else caught it and the teacher is completely fine.

CoffeeandCroissant · 14/10/2020 11:11

Cases per 100,000 in Northern Ireland are higher than in Wales, Scotland and every region in England, except North West England, which is slightly higher. Also 3 to 4 times higher than the Republic of Ireland.

Nickysofttouch · 14/10/2020 11:12

Is soft play still open???
Not that i would be going anyway but I wouldn't be too happy if that was open but hairdressers, schools etc shut.....

OP posts:
CoffeeandCroissant · 14/10/2020 11:16

14-day cases per 100,000:

NI: 562.1
ROI: 167.7

Top 10:

Derry City & Strabane: 1,587.6
Belfast: 765.7
Newry & Mourne: 654.9
Mid-Ulster: 625.0
Lisburn & Castlereagh: 407.1
Antrim & Newtonabbey: 396.7
Cavan: 385.9
Donegal: 354.9
Fermanagh & Omagh: 367.2
Monaghan: 330.7

Positives:

-Newry & Mourne 2nd consecutive day no increase, turned a corner.

-Derry & Strabane possibly plateauing, similar tentative comment for Donegal (and Clare possibly too, outside that top 10).

Negatives:

-Belfast and Cavan continue relatively strong, steady growth.

AriettyHomily · 14/10/2020 11:18

NI has less ICU beds per head doesnt it?

nancy75 · 14/10/2020 11:24

What happens in NI if they run out of hospital beds?
In England we are still in a position where if Liverpool for example run out of beds people could be sent to hospitals in areas with lower numbers (not ideal if it’s mikes away but it can be done)
What happens in NI - they obviously can’t put people on a ferry to bring them over - would they be able to access hospitals in Ireland?

Nickysofttouch · 14/10/2020 11:34

Is swimming lessons on or off?

Can kids play still on street etc???
