Do you think lockdown has weakened our immune systems?

Or does it not really work like that? I worry that the people who aren't ecv but perhaps aren't far off, might not get enough stimulus to the immune system for it to stay effective, so that when they start mixing again after lockdown/widespread mask-wearing, they're more likely to be seriously I'll from something they would have been able to fight off much easier before lockdown. Happy to be told that this isn't the case, I was just wondering.

I wondered the same. Actually, my ds8 got v ill after the first week back at school in September. Temp of 38.5. Wasnt Covid-19. Just a cold. He would never get that ill usually.

Cookerhood · 13/10/2020 23:47

I don't think it's long enough & most illnesses happen in the winter anyway. What is ecv? I keep seeing it on here.

housemdwaswrong · 13/10/2020 23:55

It doesn't work like that apparently, find this page when I was wondering the same thing. Interesting read.

@cookerhood
Extremely clinically vulnerable ie. Issued shielding guidance (or should have been at least).

*found this page.

I've had 3 or 4 bugs, all non Covid as yet, since returning to work in September. I'd worked from home since March as I'm CV, but went back to school this autumn.

I never get this many bugs from my own school these days.

Cookerhood · 14/10/2020 08:49

Ah, thanks @housemdwaswrong

Being more sedentary.
Putting on weight.
Stress.
Depression.

All reduce your health, which means you suffer more / less able to fight infection, for me, all of those things are caused by lockdown.

I'm ECV and honestly it's been bliss but I can't improve my immune system as my condition destroys it. It's been so nice to not have tonsillitis or a cold or a chest infection or something else!

CrunchyCarrot · 14/10/2020 09:12

No. I've been pretty much housebound for the past 12 years and haven't been ill during that time, even though my DP has had the occasional bug. His most recent was a couple of months ago, with a high fever. I still didn't catch it (unlike me as previously I would catch anything going). Obviously I'm just a sample of one, but I'm not particularly worried on that score.

Trackandtrace · 14/10/2020 10:31

No i dont think lockdown will damage immune system.
But some of the associated life style changes may ie increase in drinking, increase in bad diets lack of exercise may impact, however, others have made positive lifestyle changes so will have benefited.
Lack of picking up bugs has improved my childs health alot. Stronger and healtheir than ive ever known we havent sent back to school as child is ECV and we dont think schools are safe at present.

Cheetosforbreakfast · 14/10/2020 22:26

I dint know but my kids are never I’ll, a cold every few years but both had bad colds the second week back.

BogRollBOGOF · 15/10/2020 00:09

My two have been cycling around colds one after the other since they went back. They are getting milder and shorter.

They do get colds, but are rarely actually ill.
