What do you buy or will you be buying from small or local businesses...?

Food (especially treat type food - though the local greengrocer is very good too)

Supplies for my business - for instance, I buy my branded stickers from someone working from her spare bedroom

Dog walker once a week, on the one particularly awkward day of the week!

There's not much spare cash in the household at the moment, but I'll be making a special effort to buy food for Christmas dinner from local independents.

covetingthepreciousthings · 13/10/2020 23:35

We buy a fair bit from local businesses anyway but over the winter period it will be a mix of -
Nice soap, bath treats, winter candle, books from the local bookshop, various Christmas gifts. Also love the little bouquets of flowers the florist does for £5.

Then we get bits from local independent food shop too.

I want to make much more effort to but local over supermarket convenience.

I'll buy skincare and perfume from friends.
Just ordered a hat
Regular PT

Will start using a local farm shop more, the butchers and smaller shops

I think with Christmas coming there is more opportunity to do so too :)

I use my local butcher's, baker's, greengrocer's and fishmonger's shops. We've also got an independent department store which I will be making an effort to use.

Mindymomo · 14/10/2020 07:09

We use local butchers, bakers, newsagents, then have a different takeaway each week from our locals. I have had my hair cut once since reopening, but I’ve been cutting my husband and sons hair myself.

PracticingPerson · 14/10/2020 07:20

I buy a lot from local businesses, I think it's a nice way to shop anyway so it's a win-win. Amazon can fuck off Grin

frozendaisy · 14/10/2020 08:53

I wish we had a local independent bookshop. But we don't so I buy books from hive.co.uk and you can nominate your nearest!!! or any actually, independent bookshop to send profit to.

viccat · 14/10/2020 10:05

Jewellery and home decor like prints from small/independent designers (on Etsy etc.)
Soap and shampoo bars
I try to buy clothes from independent brands instead of big chains
I have a monthly cake subscription for postal brownies from a one-woman bakery
Local fruit/veg box delivery
I get bread/cakes/pastries from a local bakery quite regularly

We need a new dishwasher, ours broke in early March. There’s a local business who cannot confirm they can get one in by December. DH is determined to support them rather than use a larger store/online.

As he’s doing most of the washing up I’m not fussed about waiting.

Other than that, I buy fresh produce from the local farm shop and meat from the local butcher. We can’t afford to buy many other things right now due to job loss.

diplodocusinermine · 14/10/2020 10:18

A lovely wool shop has just opened near us - well, a previous business has moved into much larger premises. I will be buying lots of wool! After hearing about the likelihood of antibiotic ridden US meat making it to our shores post Brexit I'll be using local farms for meat and eggs and buying local fruit and veg where possible. We also have an excellent local bookshop which we use regularly.

Flagsfiend · 14/10/2020 10:27

I use a local veg box - cooperative scheme of independent growers
Bought some nice fingerless gloves from turtle doves - recycled cashmere. Thinking of buying more as Christmas presents.
The local independent garden centre for plants and pots, also does some nice treats - chocolate and alcohol. It also has a great cafe.
Local takeaways for a treat in an evening and a nice pub that does lovely gluten free food (including takeaway)
Deliberately bought from both local board game shops over lockdown to support them

jelly79 · 14/10/2020 22:26

@AdoraBell how lovely is that!

I'll do more take away from local restaurants where I can too!

Ooh and plant from local garden centres -) great idea
