AIBU To think now I've had it I should be less restricted by restrictions?

Crappy title but shrug.

Mostly recovered from covid after positive test.

I never had Hard Symptoms, just normal autumnal flu stuff.

All fine and sandy now, kept to the rules all along - no physical contact with anyone except my buble since March, and now I'm unwilling to create a Close Contact with anyone.

My town is tier 2.

SURELY as I've had this virus, I've got to be exceedingly low risk?

I'd like to go abroad. Do I have to self isolate upon return? I think yes, but AIBU to think this is illogical?

Shister. Souls have been in Corona topic.

You can catch it more than once... Viruses mutate

SherryPalmer · 13/10/2020 21:18

There is evidence that people have caught it twice.

OatBaker · 13/10/2020 21:18

You might want to read the news. You can get Covid more than once because there are different strains, so just because you've had it doesn't mean you're immune and just because you got it mildly last time doesn't mean you'll get it mildly next time.

AssCants · 13/10/2020 21:20

Really? Is that it?

Thought there was only one chap in China and now an Alamabama case?
That's statistically negligible isn't it?

YABVU and selfish; you can catch it twice.

EstherMumsnet · 13/10/2020 21:21

We are moving this to the Coronavirus topic area now for you OP

Why on earth am I selfish? Confused

There have been several cases of multiple infection. The most recent of which I believe was reported in the Lancet yesterday. A case of a 25 yo otherwise healthy male with no pre-existing vulnerabilities. The second bout of infection was reported as being worst than the first. There was also another similar case - ie second bout worst than first - reported in August.

Blurp · 13/10/2020 21:21

I think the jury is still out on whether someone who has had it can still transmit it to others, so you could still be risking others around you.

AssCants · 13/10/2020 21:22

Cheers, EstherMN Thanks

There was a BBC article today about reinfections. Even if you didn't get super ill, you'd still be spreading it to others.

You are not special and not above the rules. Think of other people.

AssCants · 13/10/2020 21:25

@RaspberryHartleys

I'm fully aware I'm not special, and haven't suggested not playing by the rules.

I'm just pondering the risk.

why on earth is she selfish Confused

It's a totally valid point

My dd has just recovered from Covid, she's at uni. I'm feeling better about her coming home for xmas as I'm presuming she'll still have antibodies by then (she had it quite badly)

PenelopePilchard · 13/10/2020 21:26

Yes OP, 2 people around the world have caught it twice.

We're all fucking doomed.

[sceptical] [sceptical]

PullTheBricksDown · 13/10/2020 21:28

Afraid the fella who's caught it a second time and it's been worse for him undermines your hopes.

emilyfrost · 13/10/2020 21:28

Why on earth am I selfish?

Because it’s still possible for you to pass it on to others, so by wanting to circumvent restrictions you’re putting others at risk because you “want to go abroad”. Hmm

cologne4711 · 13/10/2020 21:28

OP you are always selfish on here if you don't agree with others about covid.

I agree to an extent, and I also agree that the numbers proven to have had it twice are very small indeed, not enough to worry about. I would be worried about a two tier system developing. There may be a lot of us who have had it but don't show up on antibody tests so we'd still be stuck not being able to do things where people who do "pass" antibody tests would be able to do them.

I can understand your annoyance though.

I'm not circumventing restrictions. I'll self isolate if I bloody go.

I'm JUST pondering the rationale.

40million cases.

2ish reinfections.

Science behind fomite transfer has been suggested to be flawed.

I'm not selfish to muse.

Hmm

Some people really do have antibodies!
agradecida · 13/10/2020 21:32

This is why the scientists/ government are still desperately holding on to the 'you can catch it twice' narrative. How could you control a population where people are told they are now immune but still can't go back to normal socialising? How would you open pubs, flights, nightclubs, wedding venues just for some of the population and police it? How would they prove it?

AssCants · 13/10/2020 21:35

Thanks @cologne4711.

I think my thought process is that I've those with postive tests get a free pass (or slightly freer) then they'll be people faking a postive yo gain the benefits, so much easier to just keep everyone under the same rules because some people just can't be trusted and are selfish Wink

OP posts:
Janevaljane · 13/10/2020 21:42

I'm not a conspiracy theorist but even I think they are trotting out the "immunity doesn't exist" line to keep people doing what they are told.

I agree they probably should be doing this though.

Billi77 · 13/10/2020 21:47

I have had it twice and so has a friend of mine and I keep hearing of others. Trouble is, none of us could get a corona test on first infection as they were not available but had positive antibody tests and evidently covid symptoms/timelines. We did test positive in the summer/autumn though. Lots of cases are not reported because they were not confirmed by coronavirus tests or studied, so on paper you’re only going on a theory.
Like you OP, I was convinced I had some level of immunity and admittedly slacked off a little. I always wore a mask and sanitised, etc. My second round symptoms were v light, almost asymptomatic I had a test for work and didn’t expect it to be positive.
So carry on being cautious OP Smile

Janevaljane · 13/10/2020 22:04

Aren't the antibody tests famously unreliable?
