Nurseries

What's your gut feel - are nurseries likely to shut down again if things get really bad in the next month or so. Put another way, if you were sending your DC to nursery for the first time next week, would you?

Yes I would.

lunepremiere79 · 13/10/2020 08:44

This is also knowing that if they do shut down you will likely lose the fees paid in advance (we are in London so ££££)

Absolutely, mine has been back since 1st June. Touch wood no cases and its a nursery for hospital workers

IcyApril · 13/10/2020 08:45

No, I don’t think they will shut down.

addictedtotheflats · 13/10/2020 08:45

In a tier 2 lockdown area might I add

RedMarauder · 13/10/2020 08:47

They will keep childcare including nurseries and schools open until the NHS is overwhelmed.

Thegirlhasnoname · 13/10/2020 08:50

I don’t know of any (especially in my area - Tier 2) that have had a proper outbreak, unlike schools, so I think they will stay open for a while longer yet.

2 year old DD had two confirmed cases at her nursery back in July but nothing since. I’m happily surprised as I thought it would be rife in nursery but suppose it is sort of (but not really) similar to my never having heard of a head lice issue at nurseries.

lunepremiere79 · 13/10/2020 08:59

Interesting thread here seems to imply even tier 3 measures are not going to help (and should have been introduced Sept 21) www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/4049225-Chris-Whitty-saying-even-tier-3-probably-wont-be-enough-to-reduce-the-R

If that's the case, then we are probably only a month away from a proper lockdown? Let's not forget all the u-turns this government has done so far

What’s the alternative? Presumably you need the childcare.

lunepremiere79 · 13/10/2020 09:24

The alternative is that my DH will look after our DD as he is at home unemployed searching for jobs. We do want her to go to nursery though as it will be good for her development, but no point in sending her there if the end result will be the same (she will end up at home anyway and we would have lost money as well?)

My son has been in nursury for month - all fine and no issues

Remmy123 · 13/10/2020 09:47

.. I mean for months!

mynameiscalypso · 13/10/2020 09:51

I think even if there was another national lockdown, I'd be hugely surprised if nurseries closed for childcare reasons. I started sending DS a few weeks ago although technically I don't need to until Jan but he loves it and it's been brilliant for him (and I love getting a few hours off in the week)

Frazzled13 · 13/10/2020 09:52

My DD’s nursery reopened in June and haven’t had any issues (touch wood!). It’s on the same site a secondary school and quite a few of the kids are the children of teachers and still (so far) its been fine.

If you didn’t send them now, when would you?
Although, given your update, I wouldn’t be paying for childcare while one parent was unemployed in the current job market unless it was really likely they’d get a job pretty soon.

november90 · 13/10/2020 09:57

I really hope they don't close. My son is in the pre school year and I've resisted nursery fur so long because I'm a clingy mum (😂🙈), but ever since he went back in sept I'm so pro nursery! He's come on SO much, his confidence, social skills and development makes me burst with pride! This time last year he was under a speach therapist for a speech delay and he used to scream going into nursery. Now he runs in and tells me all about his friends and his day! I would be devastated for him if it was taken away again :( These kiddies are doing so well accepting the changes in our society but there are some things we just can't afford to take from them!

10storeylovesong · 13/10/2020 10:00

We're tier 3 and nurseries are staying open. I'm hopeful they won't close any time soon.

Dumpypumpy · 13/10/2020 10:20

Our nursery is shut for two weeks due to a case tho we are in highest area in England

DamitJanet · 13/10/2020 10:21

I have one in nursery at the moment and so far no issues. She goes to nursery so we can work so no real option, it if one of us wasn’t working we wouldn’t be using nursery at the moment. I’d be very surprised if they close again though.
