Anyone else surprised Newcastle isn't in tier 3?

I was in city centre today and pub I was in was convinced they would be closed today.
Is anyone else surprised ?
Do you think we might go in tier 3 at a later stage ?

I guess it depends if they think the numbers are inflated by the universities. If you took the Northumbrian numbers out, it might not be as bad as it sounds - and the fact they had 700(?) asymptomatic results suggests they tested people who wouldnt normally qualify for a test, further bumping the numbers.
Havn't the restrictions relaxed slightly? Meeting outside now ok??!!

If you look at the Newcastle and to a certain extent the Gateshead map the highest number of cases are in student areas. The other thing is that apparently the hospital admissions haven't gone up loads like in parts of the north west and growth looks to be slowing.

Willyoujustbequiet · 12/10/2020 22:54

Yes but I think it will be soon.

Torvean32 · 13/10/2020 00:14

Not surprised at all.

In Scotland bars are table service only.
If you need to go to bathroom then mask on.
No stopping to talk to others at different tables.
No live music , music or sport ( with sound on).
It's mandatory to give details at door and your temp is done.
Only drink outdoors til 10, can only drink indoors if with food.

I was more surprised about the mention of betting shops.

I'm not surprised. The numbers there are mostly student led and will settle. It's not everyone's aunt Doris catching it. 5ge numbers outside of the student areas, just like Durham, are mostly low.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/10/2020 01:05

I think Manchester also escaped tier 3 because some of its numbers are students.

It's only the Liverpool area which is tier 3 at the moment, isn't it?

Itsabeautifuldayheyhey · 13/10/2020 02:24

I'm gobsmacked that Newcastle, Manchester and Nottingham aren't in tier 3. I've pretty much agreed with most of the Govt's decisions but this just doesn't make sense to me.

VikingVolva · 13/10/2020 06:14

Government seems to be toning down Sage advice (who were advising stricter and a fortnight ago)

Presumably hoping to keep the economy going?

XiCi · 13/10/2020 06:19

I'm gobsmacked that Newcastle, Manchester and Nottingham aren't in tier 3. Me too. Per capita Nottinghams rates are far higher than Liverpools and Manchrster and Newcastles virtually the same. Liverpool rates are student led too. From what I can make out from the press conferences etc the Liverpool mayor is the only one who agreed to tier 3 and the rest refused in the negotiations

The conference yesterday focused a lot on this comforting myth.

The infections do not stay in one age group.

The difference is Liverpool's ICU is already almost full. They will let the other areas' ICUs fill up before they take more action presumably.

Iom92 · 13/10/2020 06:40

I’m in the NE and as a result of us being categorized as Tier 2, some of our restrictions are actually easing!!! Which, given the rates continue to go up, I cannot fathom!

No on trade alcohol from last Friday, dude.
PracticingPerson · 13/10/2020 06:46

@Iom92

And in tier 2 the government won't have to provide financial support.

Chickenandrice · 13/10/2020 07:31

I thought it was because only Liverpool local councillors agreed to implement a tier 3 ?
