Calling fellow shielders - What Whitty just said

At least we got a mention!

But what do we think he meant by ‘should take extra precautions’?

He seemed to be trailing a further announcement in a couple of weeks. And did acknowledge the difficulties, loneliness and mental strain of living in prolonged isolation.

I wonder if that’ll mean keeping daily outdoors exercise and not removing bubbles from those who live alone?

Keeping a beady eye on this thread.

kimlo · 12/10/2020 19:35

I thought he said Jennie Harris was going to be talking about it tomorrow?

Madhairday · 12/10/2020 19:39

Following to see if anything changes, I thought they were deliberately not unpausing shielding though they might in higher tiers.

Fucket · 12/10/2020 19:40

I just get the impression we’re the last to be thought of. Yet the ones who will suffer the most.

I’ve gone all fatalistic and don’t really care now. I will practice good hand hygiene and distancing etc. I’m back at work and don’t want to shield again, Hand on heart it’s soul destroying and damaging to my children.

I just hope that whatever is announced is not mandatory, that if I want to keep working in a school I can, and my employer won’t have a legal responsibility to put me on SSP because they won’t allowed/insured to have me on site.

I just hope the decision to shield is mine and not the governments.

iVampire · 12/10/2020 19:51

I missed the bit about Jennie Harris talking soon - I’ll keep an eye out for that!

(As an aside, what has happened to —Celia Imre— Angela McLean who used to pop up sometimes?)

Children were reassessed under new paediatric rules over the summer

Atomsaway · 12/10/2020 20:16

Watching this too. Previously shielded.

I’m teaching in a secondary school and the last thing I want to do is leave my students without a teacher. Especially the year 11s who have already had an awfully rough deal.

Never a truer word spoken!!! I have always felt the ex shielding group (that includes my husband) were thought of as expendable. With cases rising and our children/grandchildren at schools in huge bubbles (that aren't even bubbles at all) I have never been as frightened. Being told to take mythical "extra precautions" doesn't cut it.

JamieLeeCurtains · 12/10/2020 20:27

I became ECV over the summer so I'm in not on any previous lists or records. Everything I read keeps saying, 'If you were previously shielded ...' Well, March to October is a long time and a lot of people have since become unlucky members of the 'shielded category'.

And I'm not letting go of my support network for anyone or anything - I need help and care. I wouldn't trust this government to organise my medication or food supplies. Not with no-deal brexit fast approaching.

Augustbreeze · 12/10/2020 20:42

So is that all he said - previously shielded should "take extra precautions"? In all tiers or what?

And what was it about Jenny Harries tomorrow (are we returning to daily briefings?)

Haenow · 12/10/2020 20:48

My understanding is that they’re reviewing the shielding category now we know more about the virus. There was a concern about severe asthmatics, whereas, unless there are additional risk factors like increased age, male and BAME, the risks aren’t what they initially thought. The same issue occurred with people on certain immune suppressing meds. In fact, far from making people more vulnerable, some of them may be a protective factor.

ForthPlace · 12/10/2020 20:57

Of course it can't add up can it. Announce ECV need to isolate again and schools will struggle even more for staff.
Awful to think we are risking the health of some staff to keep schools open.

Cloudburstagain · 12/10/2020 21:11

I guess ECV will be told to work from home - unless you are a teacher then!

TeaLibrary · 12/10/2020 21:14

I was not impressed. It was so vague and to just suggest that shielded people "should take more care" was so pointless.

iVampire · 12/10/2020 21:15

I didn’t know an announcement about shielding was in the offing, so waiting until tomorrow doesn’t seem as bad (no where near as bad as when we were most definitely an afterthought, only communicated with by weekend leak)

I think I’m pleased that shielding has not been linked to the tiers (after all, being linked to the Nandos scale went so well, didn’t it!)

Yes ive read this as well. I'm expecting only the severest asthmatics to be shielding.
Im asthmatic and on immune suppressive drugs. Hoping they might cancel each other out.
There seemed to be a suggestion that shielding of some kind might be advised in tier 3? Jenny Harris to expand tomorrow.
For myself I am reigning in some of the things I've been doing in the last couple of months but not going to isolate completely.

scaevola · 12/10/2020 22:06

It was only ever meant to be those with the most severe asthma who were to shield.

The (adult) categories were last updated updated at the end of Septemvpber, and aren't really changed.

Thisisnotnormal69 · 13/10/2020 12:08

Anyone know when Jenny Harris is meant to be speaking?

Goldistheanswer · 13/10/2020 12:11

They’ve released new guidance on gov.uk.

Haenow · 13/10/2020 12:52

@scaevola

I get the impression they were considering a new list which should be much more specific.
They’ve not changed the conditions/criteria yet but the medics know the risks and it seems ridiculous for people to feel the need to shield when evidence shows there isn’t the increased risk. It causes - understandable - anxiety and people will lose income. What they initially said was ‘severe asthma’ encompassed quite a number of people. Ditto the immune suppressants. There’s research into this and if people don’t need to shield, they should be told. I totally understand if people want to shield.

notevenat20 · 13/10/2020 12:56

Who is a shielder these days? I am very confused what it means these days. I thought that didn't exist any more?

QueenOllie · 13/10/2020 12:58

@notevenat20 my consultant has advised me to carry on shielding
