Childs School insisting on face masks in lessons

My son's school are now insisting face masks are worn at all times indoors except when eating. It's secondary age group. I think this is going to impact on learning but I don't know what if anything I can do about it. I don't know how effective it will be either. If they are supposed to wear them for hours I think they will be fiddling with them, taking them on and off etc. What do people think?

@Dirtyblonde do
you think masks alone is why asia have got it under control and why they now have low numbers
How about spain and france is it working well in those countries

For those doubting mask wearing in school, Israel makes interesting reading....

here

I wear a mask all day at work. I also have glasses. It takes a little getting used to but I now forget that I’m wearing it and often forget to take it off for a while after I leave work. I also wear glasses. Get the masks with a metal strip. If it’s fitted close to your nose then your glasses don’t steam up. I have the reusable cloth ones and wash them at the end of the day. It really isn’t as much of an issue as people think. Other countries and school children manage this

Fancycrackers · 12/10/2020 23:13

That's good. I've just seen a BBC report showing A-Level students sitting shoulder to shoulder with no masks. Can't quite believe that parents would be happy with that, I would be utterly relieved if my child's school implemented mask wearing and proper social distancing.

timeforanewstart · 12/10/2020 23:15

@Hazelnutlatteplease but it looked like they put no restrictions in place
Schools here are not totally back to normal , how many schools have had hundreds of cases ? Is there data to say how much schools contribute than say pubs or house mixing , what seems to be driving cases here ?

Autumngoldleaf · 12/10/2020 23:17

I have feel very frustrated by this attitude op.

Your dc, my dc, everyone's dc are bloody lucky to be receiving any education at all.

We are so spoilt in the west. Children over the world have awful schools, schools in shacks, they have bear feet, nothing to write with. They do anything to get some education...

All they are being asked to do it's wear a mask and you think this will impact their education. If it does our children are in dire need of resilience and a sense of perspective...

Autumngoldleaf · 12/10/2020 23:18

Bare feet.

Autumngoldleaf · 12/10/2020 23:20

For older dc.

rorosemary · 12/10/2020 23:21

Netherlands here. My nephew said it was a bit weird the first two days and then he was used to it. They just talk a bit louder.

Don't make a big deal out of it. Most kids adapt fine.

needadvice321 · 12/10/2020 23:22

Here in Asia all school kids, even 2 year olds, wear masks all day. They adapt to it very quickly, they’re happy to be at school and it’s fine. Obviously we would all prefer it wasn’t needed, but if it keeps the kids in education then we accept it.

Smileandtheworldsmileswithyou · 12/10/2020 23:24

Masks really do help when work properly, I know some people doubt that but it’s true. Of course they should wear masks when I’m close contact with other students at work, why would it be different at school? In the secondary school I work at all children from age 4 upwards wear them all day.

Smileandtheworldsmileswithyou · 12/10/2020 23:25

I work in Asia too, and just to clarify I’m a secondary teacher in a school that has children from age 2-18

ineedaholidaynow · 12/10/2020 23:26

@Fancycrackers that is how most schools are at the moment. I suppose if a number of parents pull out their children if masks are brought in it will help with social distancing with the rest of the children in school.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 12/10/2020 23:40

This madness will never end

MrsFezziwig · 12/10/2020 23:49

Funny how prior to schools reopening parents were wailing that they would go to any lengths if only their kids could go back to school. Now that’s not good enough. How much more disruptive than mask wearing will it be if all the teachers in a school have to go off sick or isolate?

Children take their cues from parents, and are much more resilient than you give them credit for. So stop being so bloody dramatic. And if you want to pull your kid out and homeschool, then crack on.

MrsFezziwig · 12/10/2020 23:53

I saw the same report Fancy and was slightly horrified. But then I should have expected it really given the large groups of secondary pupils wandering through town with no social distancing whatsoever.

ineedaholidaynow · 12/10/2020 23:55

Why do you think there is social distancing in schools, there isn’t if they are sitting in their bubble @MrsFezziwig

PickAChew · 12/10/2020 23:55

This thread is fucking depressing.

ineedaholidaynow · 13/10/2020 00:06

It would be more depressing if schools have to close

MrsFezziwig · 13/10/2020 00:24

@ineedaholidaynow I appreciate that, but bizarrely imagined that there was some middle ground between “not possible to socially distance all (or even most of) the time” and “let’s just cram into the smallest space we can even when it would be entirely feasible to sit further apart”.

2020canfuckitself · 13/10/2020 00:29

No I don't agree with this at all. My children are all exempt though so it would affect them

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 13/10/2020 01:48

@tappitytaptap

Well I can’t stand wearing one so I wouldn’t expect kids to. If they were brought in at my child’s primary school I’d pull him out and homeschool.
The more anti mask parents that do this the better tbh.
HoldMyLobster · 13/10/2020 03:57

Mine have been wearing masks all day in school since it reopened in early Sept. All the students from age 5-18 wear them.

So far there's been one positive case out of 2000 students. The infection rate at a state level has not gone up - all schools are requiring masks.

I'd class that as working pretty well.

I asked my kids if it's a struggle to wear a mask all day. They said 'Naaah not really. You just get used to it.'

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 13/10/2020 04:02

At yet at a school locally daily email from headteacher to staff telling everyone kids and staff included to remove them in the classroom.
