Wouldn't a coalition government be preferable?

Surely a coalition government, almost like in war-time, would work better at the moment where all the political parties get involved in governance rather than the constant sniping?

I agree entirely. A government of national unity should have been convened in March. Petty political point scoring and the corresponding media shambles has added nothing to the current situation

In an ideal world, maybe. In reality, nothing happens when you have a coalition government. The parties argue and compromise and nobody is happy with the result.

Look at the coalition of Lib Dems and Conservative parties.

I didn't agree with this at the outset of the pandemic, but I've now changed my mind.

It's time.

Even if you shoved them all in a room and told them to work together, you’d still get the sniping and the political crap because they’ll all want to make sure they get all the credit if it goes right and none of the blame if it goes wrong.
Also, you need an opposition asking the government to account for its actions. Especially in a situation where unprecedented restrictions are being placed on people. You need people asking why track and trace is a disaster, why there aren’t enough tests, why we bothered building the nightingale hospitals with no one to staff them, why schools haven’t been given extra assistance, what scientific justification there is for 10pm pub closures etc. I’m not saying labour are doing a fab job of this, but it’s not more helpful to have them all working together, saying “look what a great job we’ve done”.

I also agree.

I have to say this is not an angle I've thought about before but I still think we might make more progress with a coalition.
